Capsule machines are robots that dispensecapsules to players, appearing only inMario Party 5. If a player passes a capsule machine, they can get a random capsule for free. Capsule machines are based on the real-lifegashapon machines, sometimes known as capsule machines. Capsule machines have bolts for eyes and yellow mouths where they speak and capsules come out. The machines also sport two yellow rod-like arms with blue balls on the end. In the officialMario Party 5 guide,Mario mentions he introduced capsule machines because he wanted the capsules to be free. Despite this, a certain number ofcoins is required to use a capsule, with its effect immediately taking effect after the player pays. However, coins are not required to throw capsules ontospaces to createCapsule Spaces. After everyminigame,Eldstar can be seen with three capsule machines as the game saves. On the last turn on aboard game, capsule machines become unavailable. If the player has three capsules and uses the capsule machine, the player must discard one of them.Mario Party 5 is the first game where items can be discarded if the player has more than the maximum.
InMario Party 6 andMario Party 7,Orb Spaces replace capsule machines, also giving a free random Orb to players that pass them.Orb huts also appear, allowing a player to buy a specific Orb for a certain number of coins. Orbs obtained either way can be used for free.
