Buzzy Shells[1] (also calledBuzzy Beetle Shells inSuper Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS) are theshells worn byBuzzy Beetles. In many of their appearances, they act as a more resilient version of typicalKoopa Shells, protecting the Buzzy Beetles inside them from hot hazards such asfireballs orlava. The player character can also sometimes equip Buzzy Shells as protective headgear.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
In theSuper Mario series, Buzzy Shells act similarly to Koopa Shells. When a Buzzy Beetle isstomped on, it retracts into its shell, which can then be kicked and sent sliding along the ground. While sliding, it defeats any enemy it hits, changes direction when encountering a wall, and can fall off ledges. Mario will take damage if hit by the shell. Unlike Koopa Shells, however, Buzzy Shells cannot be destroyed withFire Mario's fireballs. If left alone for a while, the Buzzy Beetle will come out of its shell to resume walking. Unlike Koopa Troopas, which wiggle their legs, there is no indication as to when the Buzzy Beetle will emerge from its shell. These properties are seen in all their appearances across 2DSuper Mario platform games, includingSuper Mario Bros.,Super Mario Bros. 3, theNew Super Mario Bros. sub-series, andSuper Mario Bros. Wonder.
The following sections detail instances in theSuper Mario platform games where Buzzy Shells have additional properties to the ones so described.
Super Mario World[edit]
InSuper Mario World, if a Buzzy Shell is taken into aWarp Pipe, the shell can be held indefinitely and the Buzzy Beetle inside will not wake up. IfYoshi eats a Buzzy Shell, heswallows it immediately, unlike with a Koopa Shell. Aglitch exists where if the player takes a Buzzy Shell through the Warp Pipe from the first section ofDonut Plains 2 to the last section, it will turn brownish-gray like aboulder.
Super Mario Maker series[edit]

New to theSuper Mario Maker games is a wearable version, obtained by shaking a Buzzy Beetle. It can be equipped by Mario, granting him protection from above.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
InPaper Mario,Tutankoopa starts his battle with three Buzzy Shells, throwing one for his attacks. Once he runs out of them, he attacks solely with his magic instead.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
InPaper Mario: Sticker Star, theFlashy Shell sticker depicts a Buzzy Shell. When it is used,Mario stomps on a Buzzy Beetle, sending it into its shell, and kicks the shell to attack enemies.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
InMario & Luigi: Paper Jam,Nabbit may take out a Buzzy Shell while battling alongside the Mario Bros. during theBad Nabbit mission. He then imitates the3D Red ShellBros. Attack, with either Mario orLuigi.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
