Buzzy Beetles, also referred to asBuzzies, are common, quadruped, turtle-likeKoopa enemies withhard, outer shells that are often dark blue. Buzzy Beetles first appear inSuper Mario Bros., where they are first found in underground levels, the common habitat trope for Buzzy Beetles, appearing in a wider variety of darker, interior areas ever since, such as tunnels, sewers, and ruins. Buzzy Beetles attack mainly by walking towards characters. If Buzzy Beetles approach a ledge, they usually walk right off.
Buzzy Beetles hide in their shells ifjumped on, and they can be kicked in a similar manner to aKoopa Shell to eliminate more enemies, destroyBrick Blocks, and activate switches. Buzzy Beetles wear a shell that is resistant tofireballs, leaving them unaffected by it. In a way, they are the polar opposite of theSpinies; enemies who are immune to stomps, but vulnerable to fireballs. Buzzy Beetles and their derivative species such asSpike Tops are also able to climb up walls and ceilings; Buzzy Beetles often use that vantage point to drop onto characters below in an ambush. UnlikeKoopa Troopas, Buzzy Beetles are quadrupedal in all of their appearances.
Despite having the word "beetle" in their name, Buzzy Beetles are not beetles; rather, they were named as such because their shells give them an almost insectoid appearance. More recent games confirm that Buzzy Beetles are in fact a type of Koopa.
Buzzy Beetles andKoopa Paratroopas are the only enemies fromSuper Mario Bros. that have yet to appear in a 3D game of theSuper Mario series. Similarly, Buzzy Beetles, along withLava Bubbles andCheep Cheeps, are also the only enemies fromSuper Mario Bros. to not appear inThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show!
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies inSuper Mario Bros. They are first seen inWorld 4-2, though it is technicallyWorld 3-4, as throwing fivefireballs at thefake Bowser at the end reveals it to be a Buzzy Beetle in disguise. Buzzy Beetles can damage Mario or Luigi on contact. Buzzy Beetles walk off of ledges, like with greenKoopa Troopas. Buzzy Beetles hides in their shells when stomped and reemerges if left alone for a while, like Koopa Troopas, although Buzzy Beetles do not indicate when they are about to emerge. Their shells can be kicked in the same manner asKoopa Troopa shells, also being able to bounce off of walls and defeat enemies along the way, though Mario can take damage if he is hit by the shell while it moves. Buzzy Beetles have a hard shell protecting them from anyfireball attacks. Buzzy Beetles are black in the overworld, but blue-gray in underground levels. In theSuper Mario All-Stars remake, all Buzzy Beetles shared the same color scheme. Here, their shells are colored black, their heads and legs are beige-colored, and their eyes are black with white sclerae. Only three Buzzy Beetles appear inWorld 5-2, all grouped together. There is one Buzzy Beetle inWorld 7-1, on the steps before theflagpole, but a Goomba replaces it in theVS. Super Mario Bros. release. Buzzy Beetles replace allLittle Goombas in thesecond quest after completing the game.
Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels[edit]
InSuper Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, Buzzy Beetles return and act just as they did in the previous game. They first appear inWorld 1-2, the first underground level of the game, though only one of them appears in that level. They appear more frequently throughout the game and in more levels than the game's precedent. They are also found underwater occasionally inWorld 9, along with all the other enemies, specifically inWorld 9-1 andWorld 9-4. The Buzzy Beetles underwater are invulnerable as they cannot be jumped on, and they are colored black with gray outlines due to sharing Blooper's color palette. In theSuper Mario All-Stars version, Buzzy Beetles replace all Goombas appearing in Worlds A-D, much like in Hard Mode of the original.
Super Mario Bros. 3 /Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies inSuper Mario Bros. 3. They behave no differently than before, though unlikeSuper Mario Bros., a visual shaking effect is added for when they are about to wake up out of their shells. Additionally, there is a certain type known as anUpside-down Buzzy Beetle,[1] which walk on the ceiling and attack the player character by dropping from there and spinning along the ground in their direction. InSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, when thered switch e-Reader card is scanned, all walking Koopa Troopas are replaced with Buzzy Beetles. In addition, there is a flying variation calledPara-Beetle, which are found only in one level. In the original version, they have the same sprites as inSuper Mario Bros., albeit with a different palette, slightly different color mapping, and few minor pixel differences. In the remakes, they were given dark-blue shells and beige limbs. In this game, Buzzy Beetles are exclusively found in cave-themed levels and no longer appear in other places. A variant calledBuster Beetle is also introduced.
Super Mario World[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies inSuper Mario World. Here, they have white claws on their feet, their skin is orange, their eyes are black with white sclerae and their shells are colored teal. They are still resistant to fireballs, thoughYoshi can eat and swallow them, unlikeKoopa Shells. Buzzy Beetles hide in their shells when jumped on and do not slide out as certainKoopa Troopas do. The game introduces theSpike Top variety, which has a spike on top of its shell, andBony Beetle, the skeletal counterparts of Buzzy Beetles. After clearing theSpecial Zone for the first time, stomped Buzzy Beetle shells will not shake before the beetles start moving again.[2]
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are uncommon enemies inNew Super Mario Bros., which is also the debut of their modern design. They appear only inWorld 5-C andWorld 6-
Tower2. A Buzzy Beetle can be kicked after being stomped and is unaffected by fire. A Buzzy Beetle hops briefly whenever a "paah" is played in the background. Spike Tops also return as enemies.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. They cannot be swallowed by Yoshi like inSuper Mario World, but their shells can still be spit out like a Koopa Troopa shell. Several Buzzy Beetles walk along the ceiling inWorld 6-3 but drop when approached, like inSuper Mario Bros. 3. They hop to the electronic vocal "paah" in the background music. The Buzzy Beetles inWorld 8-1 turn around when they walk up tolava. Buzzy Beetles may transform from the blocks in the battle againstMagikoopa atWorld 8-
Tower.Spike Tops andPara-Beetles both return, the latter receiving theHeavy Para-Beetle variety for the first time.
Big Buzzy Beetles wereoriginally going to appear in this game, but they were removed from the final game, so they never appeared in any levels. However, through hacking methods, it is possible to use one in a level.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies inNew Super Mario Bros. 2. They are found in numerous underground levels, includingWorld 6-1 andWorld
Flower-A.
New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies inNew Super Mario Bros. U.Bony Beetles also make a return since their debut inSuper Mario World, now resembling an undead Buzzy Beetle. Thelarge variety of Buzzy Beetle, which first appeared inPaper Mario: Sticker Star, also appears.
Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]
Buzzy Beetles reappear inSuper Mario Maker andSuper Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS with the addition of a newBuzzy Shell which Mario can wear on his head, protecting him from enemies and traps from above. The player can also place the empty shell by shaking a Buzzy Beetle in the editor.
Mario is able to ride on Buzzy Shells by jumping and landing on them as they move, if they are shot by aBill Blaster. By adding wings, Buzzy Beetles will slowly float from right to left (or left to right in some scenarios, such as being shot by a Bill Blaster) while maintaining Mario's ability to stand on them. Single winged Buzzy Beetles will rise when stood upon, while those with any number of enemies stacked upon them (including additional winged Buzzy Beetles) will maintain a constant altitude.
When placed in a dark area in theSuper Mario Bros. style, instead of using a cyan or gray palette like in the original game, they use a palette resembling the underground palette for brown enemies (including them) fromSuper Mario Bros. 3, having a dark teal shell with light tan details. However, the rim and feet colors are switched from this, due to still usingSuper Mario Bros.'s mapping. TheirSuper Mario Bros. 3 sprites were redesigned to no longer look the same as theirSuper Mario Bros. sprites, most notably having a thicker shell rim.
Super Mario Run[edit]
Buzzy Beetles appear inSuper Mario Run, behaving identically as inNew Super Mario Bros. and its follow-up games. They appear inDanger High and Low andChase the Snaking Coins.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Buzzy Beetles return inSuper Mario Maker 2, retaining their behavior in its predecessor. Furthermore, wearableBuzzy Shells return, also retaining retaining their behavior; this time, however, they can now be worn byLuigi,Toad, andToadette. Likewise, the player can also place the empty shell by tapping and holding a Buzzy Beetle from the pop-up menu and selecting that shell in the editor. There is also a new trait introduced in Version 2.0.0; unlikeCostume Mario, which cannot wear any Buzzy Shells inSuper Mario Maker and wereoriginally considered forSuper Mario Maker 2 before being scrapped from the game,Link can wear the those shells.
Buzzy Beetles are one of several enemies to not appear in theSuper Mario 3D World game style.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
Buzzy Beetles appear inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder, where they are shown to now be able to swim in lava. Their snouts have been slightly redesigned to match those ofBony Beetles.
Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen![edit]
InSuper Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!, Buzzy Beetles appear olive green or brown in color. One makes a brief appearance in the walking montage afterMario acquires themushroom, seen staring at the super-sized Mario in shock. Another one appears with abig-sized Buzzy Beetle in the montage after Mario acquires theFire Flower. Mario shoots the big one with afireball, despite the fact that Buzzy Beetles are ordinarily immune to fire attacks in the games.

Some Buzzy Beetles appear inNintendo Adventure Books series of gamebooks in the fourth book,Koopa Capers. They appear inWendy O. Koopa's secret camp in the Magma Pits.
Hotel Mario[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies inHotel Mario. They appear inLarry's Chillton Hotel and laterBowser's Seizures Palace Hotel, sporting a clump of snow in the former to match the snowy aesthetic. Unlike in other appearances, they behave more likeGoombas except they will walk in Mario's direction when he arrives on their floor.
Mario's Picross[edit]
InMario's Picross, a Buzzy Beetle (labeled "Buzzy-Beetle") appears as puzzle E-3 in the Time Trial mode.
Super Smash Bros. series[edit]
InSuper Smash Bros., a single Buzzy Beetle appears in theMushroom Kingdom stage, hopping on aTrampoline. Each hop, it goes progressively higher, until the fourth hop, where it does a flip and restarts the cycle. This Buzzy Beetle returns in the same capacity inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate.
A Buzzy Beetle also appears inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl andSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS as atrophy. According to adatamine, Buzzy Beetles (as well asDry Bones) were meant appear as enemies in the Subspace Emissary before being removed from the final game.
Mario Golf series[edit]
- “XC Golf is really different from anything you've seen before. No two routes are the same! Of course, sometimes that means you really get into a pickle where the ball ends up. That's when you should think about a redo. Did you know about that? Just press
to open your golfwatch, and scroll over into the In Trouble? menu. One of the options is to rehit! Yeah, you'll take a one-stroke penalty, but sometimes it's worth it.”
- —Buzzy Beetle,Mario Golf: Super Rush
The name "Buzzy" is sometimes mentioned on the scorecard in theNintendo 64 version ofMario Golf. The only time that Buzzy Beetles physically appear in theMario Golf series is as non-playable characters inRidgerock Lake inMario Golf: Super Rush.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Buzzy Beetles also appear in thePaper Mario series. They are shell enemies like the Koopa Troopas, meaning they can be flipped over when they are jumped on or by aPOW Block. However, unlike the Koopas, Buzzy Beetles do not spend a turn struggling on their back; they can right themselves on their very next turn, though they cannot attack on that turn. Fire attacks will not hurt them at all. However, if they are flipped on their back, they lose the fire immunity. Related enemies areSpike Tops,Parabuzzies (Para-Beetles which now lose their wings when they are stomped), andBony Beetles. One of the new types of Buzzy Beetles areSpiky Parabuzzies, which fliesand have a spike on their back, making it hard to damage them. InPaper Mario,Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, andSuper Paper Mario, Buzzy Beetles' eyes and entire face are visible. However, fromPaper Mario: Sticker Star toPaper Mario: The Origami King, they resemble their appearance fromNew Super Mario Bros. and onward.
Paper Mario[edit]
InPaper Mario, Buzzy Beetles appear in theToad Town Tunnels and inDry Dry Ruins. In Dry Dry Ruins, several Buzzy Beetles climb on the ceiling, like inSuper Mario Bros. 3. They can drop on Mario to attack him, and he cannot jump on them while they are hanging from the ceiling. However, he can use abadge tocause an earthquake, which causes the Buzzy Beetles to fall to the ground. Spike Tops, which are red in the game, are enemies fought insideMt. Lavalava, andBony Beetles are found inBowser's Castle. A Buzzy Beetle namedChan appears as a student at theToad Town Dojo.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
InPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and itsNintendo Switch remake, the first Buzzy Beetles in the game are fought in theGlitz Pit. They are red Spike Tops; however, as regular Spike Tops in the game are blue, they are calledRed Spike Tops in the game. Two of them build up the fighting team known asThe Tiny Spinies.
Regular Buzzy Beetles later appear as enemies in the cave under the well of theCreepy Steeple alongside Spike Tops.Para-Beetles, now known asParabuzzies, appear inPirate's Grotto. Spiky Parabuzzies are also introduced, which are found inRiverside Station. Most of these species can be found in thePit of 100 Trials.
The game also featuresSky-Blue Spinies. It is implied that these are a cross between Buzzy Beetles andSpinies, as they are called "Käfer-Stachis" ("Buzzy Beetle Spinies") in the German version ofPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.
Buzzy Beetles have very high defense and are immune to fire. Using special moves or some items such asEarth Quake will easily defeat them. The Buzzy Beetle and its species share the same stats and immunities.
Super Paper Mario[edit]
Buzzy Beetles reappear inSuper Paper Mario. The game introduces a new variant, theStone Buzzies: Buzzy Beetles with stone shells that always take three hits to be defeated. They are found in theDowntown andGap of Crag. The game also features "dark" versions of several Buzzy Beetles variations, notablyDark Spike Tops andDark Stone Buzzies, found in theFlopside Pit of 100 Trials.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
Buzzy Beetles appear inPaper Mario: Sticker Star. They are encountered in cavern areas and in 2D underground segments. They are modeled after their appearance inNew Super Mario Bros. In the overworld, Buzzy Beetles can travel along the bottoms and sides of platforms, similar to a Spike Top. The Buzzy Beetle's only attack in this game is going into its shell and ramming into Mario. A Buzzy Beetle's shell toss attack sometimes gets MarioDizzy. If Mario jumps on it but does not defeat it, it will hide inside its shell for a short time. When hiding, no attack will damage it. Mario can jump on it again to kick it at enemies behind it, damaging them.Spike Tops andBony Beetles also appear in this game, as well as the introduction ofShiny Buzzy Beetles. A Buzzy Beetle may rarely drop aFlashy Shell. The only other enemies to appear in battles with Buzzy Beetles areGoombas.
If a Buzzy Beetle is upside down, it will try to get back up. Unlike the Koopa Troopas, these Buzzy Beetles will always get back up as soon as they are flipped over, and rarely make theFirst Strike. However, five Buzzy Beetles inDrybake Stadium aim directly at Mario when he enters. They are also the last Buzzy Beetles encountered and the only fight to have a group of five.
A mini-boss,Big Buzzy Beetle, also appears in the game, encountered atHither Thither Hill.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
Buzzy Beetles return inPaper Mario: Color Splash. They have the same behavior and appearance as they do inPaper Mario: Sticker Star. They appear inIndigo Underground andRedpepper Volcano. A Buzzy Beetle also serves as the second-round opponent inRoshambo Temple #2.Small Buzzy Beetles appear in theSacred Forest, along with aSmall Buzzy Beetle Gang. ABuzzy Beetle Tower that consists of a Buzzy Beetle, a Small Buzzy Beetle, a Big Buzzy Beetle, and a greenSpike Guy appears inthe Emerald Circus.Buzzy Beetle Gangs appear in theparallel world onLighthouse Island.
Paper Mario: The Origami King[edit]
Origami versions of Buzzy Beetles appear as enemies inPaper Mario: The Origami King, first appearing inBreezy Tunnel. As usual, they attack Mario with aShell Shot move, flinging at him in their shells and dealing 8 damage. Stacked Shell Shot has multiple Buzzy Beetles join together and hit Mario, doing 12 damage with two Buzzy Beetles, 17-18 with three, 21-23 with four, 24-27 with five, and 26-30 with six. Group Shell Shot deals 27-32 damage. Tower Attack does a base 6 damage with its maximum increasing by one for each additional Buzzy Beetle. Shell Spark does 12-13 damage with three Buzzy Beetles, 18-19 with four, 24-26 with five, and 30-33 with six.
Like other shelled enemies, they retreat into their shells after being stomped on, making them more resistant to attacks. If stomped on in this state, the shell launches forward and attacks all enemies in its line for 20 damage. Buzzy Beetles share the same elemental resistances asSpike Tops, including being immune tofire and vulnerable toice.
A paper Buzzy Beetle appears in the dungeon ofPeach's Castle alongside other minions at the beginning of the game after Mario is sent there by origami Peach. Buzzy Beetles appear as NPCs inShangri-Spa, and help battle theFolded Soldiers inBowser's Castle. Buzzy Beetles are one of the wrong answers on the Race 'n' Place board forShy Guys Finish Last. Sprites for Buzzy Beetles equipped with towels for cleaning Shangri-Spa exist, but gounused in the final game.
InScuffle Island, aPaper Macho version called thePaper Macho Buzzy Beetle is fought as the seventh and final opponent of the island. In Bowser's Castle, a different kind of Paper Macho Buzzy Beetle called thePaper Mistake Buzzy Beetle is fought as a boss.
Buzzy Beetles were intended to appear in an additional cliffside room at theSpring of Rainbows that was removed from the game.[3]
Mario Party series[edit]
Buzzy Beetles' appearances in theMario Party series are restricted mostly to nonessential roles in minigames.
InMario Party 6, Buzzy Beetles make a cameo appearance in the 2-vs-2 mini-game,Slot Trot. They appear as one of the images on the slots. Their appearance here is similar to thePaper Mario series appearance, except for their claws and paws, which are not white. Similarly, inMario Party DS, Buzzy Beetles make a cameo in theMemory Mash minigame as pictures of a possible match, using the same sprite as inMario Party 6.
InMario Party 8, Buzzy Beetles have their first tangibleMario Party role in theBattle Minigame,Glacial Meltdown. ALakitu throws them onto the ice, oddly instead of their species' normalSpiny accomplices, making them both obstacles and weapons for the players to use to knock the opponents off the ice.
Mario Party 9 is the Buzzy Beetles' next, albeit smaller, tangible role in aMario Party game. They appear in the minigameGoomba Spotting, as a trick in order to lead the player into miscounting, since only the number of Goombas is counted at the end of the minigame. However, a Buzzy Beetle still makes a cameo on one of the puzzles inJigsaw Jumble.
Buzzy Beetles only make a few cameos inMario Party: Island Tour: in theMatch Faker andTap Dash minigames as well as walking in the rocks ofBowser's Peculiar Peak board.
InMario Party: The Top 100, Buzzy Beetles retain the same cameos inMario Party 6'sSlot Trot andMario Party 9's Jigsaw Jumble. Buzzy Beetles also retain their role in theMario Party 9 minigame Goomba Spotting, as well as in the minigame's reappearance inMario Party Superstars.
InSuper Mario Party, a Buzzy Beetle makes a cameo appearance in the minigameAbsent Minded, where it is one of the characters that can be chosen as a guess.
Buzzy Beetles can sometimes appear in theSuper Mario Party Jamboree minigameWhich Door Has More?, and artwork of the creatures can appear in the minigamesBig-Top Quiz,Match Makers, andPuzzle Pandemonium. A Buzzy Beetle also appears as a selectable reaction from the reactions list.
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam. They are encountered in the lower half ofMount Brrr. Each time it takes damage, it will hide in its shell. While the Buzzy Beetle is in its shell, the damage it takes is reduced to 0. The only way to get the Buzzy Beetle out of hiding is to hammer the shell and then dodge it when it comes back towards the bro who hit it. When it hides in its shell, it has an attack where it can spin so much that, if jumped on it when it spins hard, Mario and Luigi becomedizzy, andPaper Mario loses most of his copies. They can also attack by walking towards one of the bros., occasionally getting into their shell. The attack can be countered with a hammer, though attacking them when they are in their shell causes the shell to get knocked away, and into the bro that hit it. If theTrio Hammer is used near them, they are flipped over. When they are flipped, the player can do aFirst Strike to them, which also prevents them from hiding in their shell at least once. Oddly, in this game, they are not fireproof when Mario and Luigi use theFire FlowerBros. Attack on them, though they take half damage from fire. Their paper form does not appear in this game.
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are enemies and recruitable allies exclusively in theMinion Quest: The Search for Bowser mode ofMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions. Buzzy Beetles are melee troopers, and attack by ramming enemies with their shells. Buzzy Beetles have high defense, and theirSpecial Skill, Rock Solid, allows them to increase their defense, depending on how filled the meter that appears becomes. They are strong againstPara-Beetles.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
Buzzy Beetles reappear inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, as enemies and recruitable allies in theBowser Jr.'s Journey mode. They are melee troopers, and are strong against Para-Beetles. Their Special Skill is changed to Mega Tackle.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]
Buzzy Beetles appear as enemies and potential allies inPuzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition. They have the Dark attribute, and their skill involves reducing enemy damage for three turns.
Enemy Buzzy Beetles have two skills that they can use. The first skill, called Light Bind, paralyzes all the player's teammates who have Light as their main attribute or sub-attribute for two turns. The second skill, called Beetle Guard, protects the Buzzy Beetle and its allies from all status defects (such as defense reductions and turn delays) for a few turns.
The player can transform a Buzzy Beetle into aBony Beetle by using fourBoo Mushrooms on it. Alternatively, the Buzzy Beetle can transform into aPara-Beetle when given fourP-Wings.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
Buzzy Beetles are assistants inDr. Mario World. In both stage mode and versus mode, their effect is to transform an object, mainly a virus, into ashell when the stage starts, where the chance of activation is higher at higher levels (20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100% from levels 1 to 5 respectively).
Mario Kart series[edit]
InMario Kart Tour, the Buzzy Beetles themselves do not appear in the game, but they make cameo appearances on two badges, one on a colored Common Challenges badge and another on a red Expert Challenges badge. Additionally, a Buzzy Beetle appears on a painting in thePrado Museum inMadrid Drive 3. This painting reappears inTour Madrid Drive in theBooster Course Pass DLC forMario Kart 8 Deluxe.
Illumination film series[edit]
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
Two Buzzy Beetles stacked on top of each other can be seen inThe Super Mario Bros. Movie as a part ofBowser's army. During the Koopa Troop's attack on theSnow Kingdom they haveBill Blasters on their shells, similar to theSuper Mario Maker games. More are later seen during Bowser's wedding to Princess Peach and the final battle in Brooklyn.

A colony of Buzzy Beetles appears in theDesert Area'sInverted Pyramid inThe Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Inside the pyramid,Fire Luigi reflexively attempts to shoot fireballs at the Buzzy Beetles, which has no effect. Buzzy Beetles also appear in the casino-themed cubed zone.[4]
Unused appearances[edit]
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
One piece of concept artwork for theBroodals fromThe Art of Super Mario Odyssey labeled "Powered-Up Regular Enemy Designs" depictsHariet as a Buzzy Beetle with a unique set of dark blue, braid-like plaits thatBob-ombs are attached to who wears a dress patterned afterBuzzy Shells to indicate Buzzy Beetles' appearances in theSuper Mario franchise. This design, along with the rest, were scrapped because they are too similar to theKoopalings.
Profiles and statistics[edit]
- Main article:List of Buzzy Beetle profiles and statistics
Most Buzzy Beetle bios point out their hard carapace and their resistance to fire-based attacks. Some bios also mention their tendency to walk on ceilings, despite this being a trait shared by Spinies.

Upside-down Buzzy Beetle[edit]
"Upside-down Buzzy Beetle" refers to a specific type of Buzzy Beetle that clings to the ceiling inSuper Mario Bros. 3. This is the type of Buzzy Beetle presented in the instruction booklet for the originalFamicom andNES release, but they were localized as "normal" Buzzy Beetles for most languages at the time. In all subsequent games, clinging to the ceiling is an attribute of normal Buzzy Beetles.
In the Italian version of theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia, the entry for the Upside-down Buzzy Beetle is erroneously titled "Sole malvagio," the Italian name for theAngry Sun.[46]
