Episode 3: The Goopy Inferno of Pianta Village in the game Super Mario Sunshine.
Burning goop covering a large portion ofPianta Village

Burning goop, also known asred gunk,[1]hot gunk,[2]lava,[3] ormolten goop,[4] is a type of superheated red-orangegoop appearing only inPianta Village inSuper Mario Sunshine. It releases small bursts of flame intermittently. This type of goop deals damage toMario on contact and sends him flying upward as if he were burnt by fire. Burning goop does not instantly cause Mario to lose a life, unlikelava. Unlike the similarelectric goop, burning goop can deal damage to Mario only in certain large quantities, so burning goop cannot hurt him in small specks.Goobles are regularly spawned from burning goop, just like with regular goop. If Mario gets caught in the middle of a large quantity of burning goop, he most likely loses a life or otherwise sustains heavy damage, as he will have nowhere else to go after flying upward and falling back down. Like most other types of goop, burning goop can be cleaned up byFLUDD'swater or from similar sources.

DuringEpisode 1, burning goop is produced by feverishChain Chomplets, though their type does not produce Goobles. InEpisode 3, burning goop covers most of the village and Mario must save thePianta mayor in his house, which is isolated in the middle of the village.Plurps fly around and drop burning goop during this episode. InEpisode 6, small puddles of burning goop trap tenPiantas, whom Mario has to rescue. InEpisode 7, a trail of burning goop is left behind byShadow Mario as he runs, and he occasionally paints his distinctive "M" signature out of burning goop.
