Burn
- “Burned! The fire will steadily do damage!”
- —Battle text,Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Burn is a status ailment in theMario & Luigi series,Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door andits Nintendo Switch remake, and theMario + Rabbids series. In the case of the latter three, if afrozen character is burned, both status ailments are negated.
History[edit]
Mario & Luigi series[edit]
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions[edit]
Burn first appears inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Using the regular oradvanced versions of theFire Bros.Bros. Attack,Mario can sometimes burn enemies, making them lose some HP every turn, similar toPoison. A miniature flame appears to be floating above the enemy, indicating the condition. InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions, the status effect acts similarly to its incarnations in recentMario & Luigi games, and Mario can burn enemies by landing aFirst Strike on an enemy using theFirebrand. The more dangerous variation of Burn, "Char", also appears, and can be inflicted on enemies as well using the "Super Fire Bros." Super Attack.
In the remake, sprites exist for Mario and Luigi being inflicted with a Burn, though they are unused.
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time[edit]
The Burn status ailment returns inMario & Luigi: Partners in Time with a change: if a character is burned, that character loses 8 HP every turn and will not be able to attack or dodge, much as a combination of the Poison andDizzy status ailment. Burn is indicated with the character visibly on fire. The three ways to cure a burn are using a Refreshing Herb, waiting until it wears off, or ending the battle by defeating the enemies with the unaffected character. TheElasto-Piranhas,Shrooboid Brat,Blazing Shroobs,Bowser,Baby Bowser,Skellokeys,Elder Shrooboid andShroob Rexes are the only enemies to give the Mario Bros. this status effect.Bro Flowers andMix Flowers can randomly inflict this status ailment on enemies.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
The Burn status returns inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story with the same effect as inMario & Luigi: Partners in Time. However, only two enemies can cause the Burn status:Calorite andBowser. Bowser can also cause the Burn status ailment to enemies by using hisfiery breath, and it can be inflicted with theFire FlowerSpecial Attack. When any enemies (or bosses) are on fire, their idle animation goes much faster. InMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, the status retains the same function it had in the original game.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]
The Burn status returns once again inMario & Luigi: Dream Team with the same effect as inMario & Luigi: Partners in Time. Some fire-breathing enemies may cause this status to Mario and Luigi, like theMagmads and theFlaming Antasmatons. There is also a more harmful "burn" status effect called "Char". The victim of "burn" takes 10 damage at a time and the victim of "char" takes 30 damage at a time. There is also ahammer item called theFlame Hammer that can burn enemies when used.
Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]
The Burn status returns once again inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam from with the same effect in the past three games. However the victim of "burn" will take 10 damage (20 damage on an enemy) and the victim of "char" will take 30 damage, just like inMario & Luigi: Dream Team.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]
This effect returns inMario & Luigi: Brothership. Provided the player applies the appropriateBattle Plug, Mario and Luigi can burn enemies by scoring an "EXCELLENT" rating with aJump orHammer attack. Some enemies can also inflict Mario and Luigi with this status effect. Contrary to its iteration in previous games in the series, Burn will only deal damage over time but will not prevent attacking and dodging, which makes it functionally identical toPoison, except that it isn't capable of reducing the afflicted brother's HP below 1.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

InPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door andits Nintendo Switch remake, Burn behaves much the same way asPoison, that is, the afflicted character will lose 1 HP every turn for a number of turns. However, Burn usually won't last as long. Burn is indicated by a small flame at the afflicted's back. It can be cured by status cure effects likeSweet Treat andTasty Tonic, the falling water stage hazard, an attack that inflicts theFrozen ailment, or simply waiting for a few turns. Fiery foes, such asLava Bubbles, are immune. Mario can gain immunity to Burn by equipping theIce Power badge.[1] In the remake, Burn can also be prevented with theFeeling Fine orFeeling Fine P badges.
Vivian is capable of inflicting a burn on her enemies using herShade Fist andFiery Jinx moves, and Mario can do so as well with theFire Drive badge. Additionally, it can be caused by the following foes:Fire Bros,Lava Bubbles,Embers,X-Naut PhDs,Phantom Embers, andGrodus, and by the flame-throwing nozzles onstage.
Mario + Rabbids series[edit]
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]
The Burn status returns inMario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. This time, inflicted characters take some immediate damage, followed by running around frantically and eventually stopping at a random space after a few seconds have passed. Characters inflicted with this status also have the possibility of inflicting the status to other characters simply by passing through them. Once the inflicted character stops moving, it is immediately cured. Inflicted characters are also vulnerable toreaction shots.

- Pirabbid Plant
- SherbetSupporter
- Sandy
- LavaHopper
- LavaValkyrie
- Mecha Jr.
- Lava Queen (Ground-Pound)

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]
