Bumpties[1] are a race ofpenguin-like creatures that first appeared inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They are usually found in icy regions, and are generally seen either patrolling or jumping around on the ground, although they can also be seen flying, despite being inspired by penguins. Bumpties have pear- or egg-shaped bodies. Most Bumpties are light-blue; however, they appear blue inYoshi's Story and lavender inYoshi's New Island, while purple, blue-gray, green, and teal individuals also appear inPaper Mario.
History[edit]
Yoshi series[edit]
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island /Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]
Bumpties are usually found wandering around in icy areas ofYoshi's Island in their debut game,Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. WhileYoshi can grab Bumpties with his tongue, he cannot swallow them. Also, if he runs into one, he is bumped backwards, hence the name. This means that Bumpties cannot hurt Yoshi, though they may bump him into other hazards such as abottomless pit orthorns. Their official artwork depicts them as a more lavender shade of indigo.
They can also steal Baby Mario if Baby Mario has already been knocked off Yoshi and is floating towards one, like aBandit.[2][3]
Yoshi's Story[edit]
Bumpties reappear inStage 3-4: Frustration inYoshi's Story. They still repel Yoshi if run into, but they can be eaten. Bumpty's beak is redesigned to be shorter and consist of two distinct parts, which makes it resemble a mouth more. They also lack the strand of hair on their heads in this game.
Yoshi's Island DS[edit]
Bumpties appear also inYoshi's Island DS inBaby Bowser's levels. Here, they can be defeated simply by blasting them with one of Baby Bowser'sfireballs. The design changes fromYoshi's Story are not present.
Yoshi's New Island[edit]
InYoshi's New Island, Bumpties appear inBrave the Bumpty Blizzard andFire Watermelon Wonderland. They are colored lavender, similarly to their original artwork, instead of blue. Unlike previously, Bumpties will not steal Baby Mario if he has been knocked off Yoshi's back.
Yoshi's Woolly World /Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
InYoshi's Woolly World andPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, Bumpties come in three different types. Some walk left and right, others fly left and right, and the last start off walking but switch into a sitting slide. Jumping on a flying Bumpty does not affect its flight. While sliding, Bumpties move faster and bounce off walls. Bumpties will bounce Yoshi away if they hit him instead of dealing damage. Bumpties can be eaten, but are not converted into ayarn ball. Bumpties that are spat out will always walk. However, a Bumpty that slides will revert to sliding in short order after it lands. Bumpties appear only in the levelsBig Montgomery's Ice Fort,Snowy Mountain Lift Tour andWonderful World of Wool.
Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]
Bumpties reappear inYoshi's Crafted World, notably being summoned byBurt the Ball in the boss fight against him inBurt's Bouncy Battle. There are also some Bumpties who appear as spectators in the same course. They also appear as basic enemies inChilly-Hot Isles. Some use buckets as armor to push Yoshi into the water. Yoshi can hit them witheggs to obtain Red Coins. Throwing a Bumpty into the water causes it to drown.
Tetris Attack[edit]
A certain Bumpty appears only in theSNES version ofTetris Attack, allied withDr. Freezegood in the "Ice World". It replaces the ice fairy, Sharbet, fromPanel de Pon. Here, it is depicted as Yoshi's friend, but enchanted byBowser andKamek to work for them. Yoshi and Bumpty become friends again after freeing it and Dr. Freezegood from the spell. It also notes in the game that others say that it is cute, but it really does not like it, and would like to be considered cool.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
Bumpties, referred to simply aspenguins, return inPaper Mario. In this game all the penguins are allies, not enemies. At the beginning of the game, a small group of penguins (includingMayor Penguin) attend a party atPeach's Castle prior to the arrival ofBowser. Later,Mario travels to a city of penguins calledShiver City. He also meets a famous penguin namedHerringway who is a writer. Additionally, one of the penguins in Shiver City is a participant of theDojo inToad Town, having fought his way to aThird-Degree Card.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]
Penguins also make a small appearance inPaper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door where they live inPoshley Heights, a town of the rich and famous. Mario also meets an incompetent detective penguin namedPennington. The penguins living in Poshley Heights typically say 'eh' in between sentences, an exclamation stereotypically associated withCanadian English.
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Bumpties also appear inSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, only appearing in the World-e levelSlip Slidin' Away. The sprites are the same as inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, but with a slightly different palette. Players cannot harm them unless they use aFire Flower orHammer Suit. If players try stomping on it, they are bounced off, and if they touch it from the side, players will not be harmed, but they will be knocked off to the side. Bumpties have no collision withStretch Blocks and can walk inside them.
