Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario World[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario World can be found floating around in a fewlevels, includingForest of Illusion 3,Chocolate Island 2, andChocolate Island 5. Bubbles contain eitherSuper Mushrooms,Bob-ombs,Goombas, orCheep Cheeps. Simply touching one causes it to burst, with whatever in it falling down.Large green bubbles also appear as obstacles inVanilla Ghost House andValley Ghost House.
Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]
Inthe Hippo level, the titularHippo blowssoap bubbles,[1] that allow Mario to "swim" in air, allowing him to reach the entrance to theSpace Zone. They pop when they touch water or an enemy - in the latter case, a powered-up Mario briefly flashes between his large andsmall Mario sprites as if he has taken damage, but will not lose his current power-up (e.g.,Fire Mario does not becomeSuper Mario).
Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario 64 and itsNintendo DS version appear in underwater areas likeJolly Roger Bay. They usually appear when Mario opens atreasure chest underwater, and contain oxygen that refills hisHealth Meter.
Super Mario Advance[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario Advance, theGame Boy Advanceremake ofSuper Mario Bros. 2, are big solid objects which hold1-Up Mushrooms, and they can only be popped by throwing threeVegetables or enemies at them.
Super Mario Sunshine[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario Sunshine can be used by Mario inNoki Bay when he dives to seeEely-Mouth, who spews forth toxic bubbles. If Mario were to squirt the toxic bubbles long enough, they turn into breathable air, filling up Mario's air life meter. During the fight with King Boo, if the slots end with any incorrect combination, King Boo will spew out bubbles that drop water bottles when sprayed, but will also home in on Mario and hurt him if he touches them.
Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 appear in theWorld-e levelsVegetable Volley andA Sky-High Adventure, both having two in total. Functioning similarly as inSuper Mario Advance, the first bubble contains aSuper Mushroom, while the second has anAdvance Coin.
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Bubbles inNew Super Mario Bros. appear in underwater levels and containCoins.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport have two roles. They can be found throughout underwater areas and refill Mario or Luigi's oxygen meter if he touches one, much like inSuper Mario 64. There are also bubbles that can be found in generator machines on land, which Mario or Luigi can enter and ride in. The player must use theWii Remote to aim the bubble in the desired direction, blow it around by pressing
, and leave the bubble by pressing
. If the bubble touches sharp or electrical objects or is pinched by walls, it pops, causing Mario or Luigi to fall to a deadly hazard, defeating him.
Anunused part ofBubble Blast Galaxy includes cube-shaped bubbles.[2]
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
Players respawn in bubbles inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii's multiplayer mode after losing a life, but can also enter a bubble by pressing
(when the Wii Remote is held horizontally) or
(when the Nunchuk is attached to the Wii Remote), giving themselves immunity. Players cannot leave their own bubbles voluntarily; they must be popped by a player not in a bubble, be it by direct contact or a thrown projectile such as a fireball, ice ball, orbarrel. The player can shake theWii Remote to move closer to the other players; each character will make pleas for help that can be heard from the Wii Remote's speakers. However, if all players end up in a bubble, or if the remaining player loses a life, those in bubbles lose theirpower-ups, but don't lose any lives. Players in a bubble can be jumped off of, popping them in the process, and, if they have thePropeller Mushroom power-up, even restoring their own helicopter spin. Players cannot bubble in Coin Battle mode. Coins and items can be found in bubbles floating around some levels, particularly in Free Mode; bubbles with coins appear in the underwaterlevels, just as inNew Super Mario Bros.
Also, inWorld 7-2, there are water bubbles, calledWater Balls. Players can swim in them, and they also slow downBullet Bills. They move in mid-air that the player can jump in. Once in one, the player can swim through it to continue onward.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 are similar to their appearance inSuper Mario Galaxy, but can no longer carry around Mario and Luigi, so they are used only for replenishing Mario or Luigi's air gauge when it gets too low. One minor difference in this game involves theCo-Star Luma being able to physically fetch air bubbles that are far away from the player, and then bring them to the player.Peach is also shown to be trapped inside a bubble before the final boss.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
Bubbles inNew Super Mario Bros. 2 function identically as inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. They are entered by pressing a special button on theNintendo 3DS' touch screen. A player in a bubble can approach the other by pressing. If the lead player goes too far off the other player's screen, the other automatically enters a bubble, as opposed to dying, which would have been the case inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
Bubbles inNew Super Mario Bros. U and itsNintendo Switchport function the same as inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii.Bubble Baby Yoshis are also capable of shooting bubbles from their mouths, which can turn most enemies intoCoins,power-ups or1-Up Mushrooms. When the player gets a power-up from a Bubble Baby Yoshi's bubble, the order in which they appear is as follows:Super Mushroom,Fire Flower,Ice Flower, andSuper Acorn.Water Balls fromNew Super Mario Bros. Wii also reappear. In the game's credits sequence, there is a minigame that revolves around collecting coins in bubbles blown by Bubble Baby Yoshis.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario 3D World can contain players like inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii andNew Super Mario Bros. U, but a difference is that if only one player is active, they cannot put themselves into a bubble. This marks the first time it can be done in a 3DSuper Mario game. In addition, someSuper Mushrooms can be found encased in bubbles, while bubbles containingSuper Bells can be found above water inBowser's Fury.
Super Mario Run[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario Run serve as extra lives for the player, essentially replacing1-Up Mushrooms. Unlike in previous games, they are not carried over between levels. Each level starts the player off with two bubbles. If the player is defeated, they are encased in one of these bubbles and get launched to the left. Once the bubble slows down, they float slowly leftward on a set path. The path is the level's primary path, avoiding any hard to reach areas. The player can float for as long as they want, stopping at the beginning of the level, to access prior areas. Time does not count down while inside a bubble. At any point past the launch the player can pop the bubble by tapping the screen, returning to normal gameplay. The player falls straight down unless they interrupt the fall with aMidair Spin or other action. They are briefly invincible after leaving the bubble. If the player loses all of their bubbles and dies, they fail the level and have to restart from the beginning.Time running out ignores remaining bubbles and defeats the player.
The player can manually activate a bubble by tapping the bubble icon at the top left corner of the screen, which skips to the floating portion. This first forces the player onto the primary path before the backward floating begins, and invincibility is not granted after leaving. If the player tries to exit a bubble while passing through a solid object, the bubble will jolt up or down instead. If the bubble is floating downward, it instead jolts left and right. Extra bubbles can be found in? Blocks. Obtaining one this way stops all movement identically to obtaining a power-up.Easy Mode allows the player to use infinite bubbles.
Bubbles can float pastpipes, but they cannot go through doors. Therefore, inGhost Houses or the exterior of aTower, bubbles instead float to near the start of the room. Bubbles do not leave a room withBoom Boom, instead floating to the center.
In Toad Rally, the player has an infinite supply of bubbles, but cannot manually enter a bubble.
In Remix 10, bubbles are not used as extra lives, with the game proceeding to the next course if the player dies, or ending the run if it is the last course. Bubbles instead serve to provide extra power-ups. Every time the player collects 100 coins, the coin counter resets and a bubble appears from the top right of the screen with a power-up. If the player issmall, then a Super Mushroom will be inside. If the player isbig, then aSuper Star will be inside. Bubbles move to float over the player, then alternate between moving slightly ahead and returning to being above the player. Bubbles move upward slowly, so the player can pick them up byjumping. Avoiding a bubble is difficult. If the playerslides they can outpace a bubble, so the bubble has to catch up. Bubbles and the power-ups inside do not disappear unless the player touches the finalGoal Pole or otherwise clears the last course. If the player touches a Goal Pole or dies, all bubbles will stop moving, then reappear when the next course starts. More than one bubble can be active at the same time, such as if the player collects a large number of coins at once.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario Odyssey have a number of roles. Large bubbles appear in some underwater areas and replenish Mario's air meter like inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2.Hearts and Coins are sometimes contained in bubbles.Bubblers create bubbles at a constant rate, and these float upward until they pop. When aCheckpoint Flag is touched underwater, it creates a bubble.
If Mario falls off certain areas of the game, such as the concert stage during theNew Donk City Festival and the Floating Island in theLuncheon Kingdom, he is placed in a bubble and returned to the where he fell from. More specific situations may return Mario to a default point instead.[3] This is similar to the transparent sphere from theComet Observatory inSuper Mario Galaxy and the credits inSuper Mario Galaxy 2.
InAssist Mode, bubbles are a prominent element. If Mario falls into a pit, touchespoison that defeats him instantly, or touches lava, and he has more than onehealth point, a bubble will carry Mario back to the last stationary platform he was standing on while taking away one health point. If Mario only has one health point, then the bubble does not appear and Mario dies. This can also occur in 8-bit areas, so bubbles have an appearance specifically for those and Mario uses the crouching sprite while inside. Certain areas of the game, usually those involving all nearby ground collapsing, do not allow bubbles to rescue Mario in this manner.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Players respawn inside of bubbles inSuper Mario Maker 2's multiplayer after being defeated, similar to theNew Super Mario Bros. games. They are given new sprites in theSuper Mario Bros. andSuper Mario Bros. 3 game styles, since they did not appear in those original games. Additionally, when a player carrying aKey or a completedClear Condition is defeated in multiplayer, the Key or Clear Condition enters a bubble, allowing other players to grab it.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]
Bubbles inSuper Mario Bros. Wonder can be blown by players while in theirBubble form, and can use them to defeat enemies. Furthermore, these bubbles can also be jumped off of by players.[4]
The role of bubbles from some previous games of reviving defeated players in multiplayer is succeeded byghosts.
Yoshi franchise[edit]
Yoshi's Island series[edit]
Bubbles appear inSuper Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, its remake, andYoshi's Island DS with a variety of roles. They sometimes house1UPs, but usually appear in the form ofmorph bubbles. If the player is hit by an enemy,Baby Mario floats away in a Bubble.Bubble Dayzees andBarney Bubbles also spit out Bubbles as their attack method. These Bubbles cannot hurt aYoshi directly, but are capable of knocking him back. Yoshis can also bounce up high after jumping onto these Bubbles. The Yoshis can also spit these Bubbles themselves upon licking them up, though theirs' defeat enemies instead, and must be restocked by licking up another bubble.
Yoshi's Story[edit]
Bubbles inYoshi's Story appear in every level, and they commonly contain fruits such asapples, bananas, grapes, watermelons, andmelons. A Yoshi can pop a bubble by simply throwing anegg at it or by touching it about 15 to 30 times. When the Yoshi bumps into it once, it simply gets knocked around, without popping. Bubbles occasionally just float or move around the area of the level above the ground. In some levels in the game, a bubble contains aHeart Fruit that can actually help the Yoshi. Occasionally, bubbles marked with question marks, known as? Bubbles, contain surprises.
Yoshi's Woolly World /Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
Bubbles inYoshi's Woolly World andPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World can be bounced on by Yoshi. Bubbles appear three levels,Big Montgomery's Bubble Fort,Woollet Bill's Last Ride, andWonderful World of Wool. Bubbles can be popped from aHook Guy's sticks, and enemies are sometimes contained inside of them. Bubbles inPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World also appear in thePoochy Dash levelZippy Lagoon, where they pop upon contact withPoochy.
Diddy Kong Racing /Diddy Kong Racing DS[edit]
InDiddy Kong Racing and the remakeDiddy Kong Racing DS, Bubbles are the third (after oil slick and mine) and most powerful upgrade obtained from greenWeapon Balloons, which give Droppers, items that players place behind them as hazards. Bubbles trap anyone who drives into them, stop them, lift them slightly, and pop, dropping them.Bubbler also drops these hazards in theBubbler Challenge rematch in Adventure Mode.
Wario Land series[edit]
Bubbles in theWario Land series first appear inWario Land II, then reappear inWario Land 3 andWario Land 4. In each game, bubbles are found in the underwater segments of various levels. IfWario makes contact with one, he becomesBubble Wario, being trapped inside and forced to float to the water's surface or until he hits a ceiling. In some areas, they are a helpful tool, allowing Wario to bypass water currents, but when Wario needs to swim down a channel, the bubbles become a nuisance, as they push him back to the surface. InWario Land II, the bossAwabō is made from a bubble.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario[edit]
A bubble inPaper Mario is blown by theBubble Plant inFlower Fields if given aBubble Berry. Mario and his partner can hop into the Bubble and travel past a sea of thorns.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
A bubble inPaper Mario: Color Splash is used by Mario andHuey to travel while playingSnifit or Whiffit. If Mario fails four main rounds or one bonus round or refuses to take part in the game show, aBig Urchin pops the Bubble, giving him an instantGame Over.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat[edit]
Bubbles inDonkey Kong Jungle Beat are spawned byBubble Shrubs, and they can be climbed into, causing them to rise withDonkey Kong inside. In the original release, controlling the bubble is the same as controllingDonkey Kong's walk, but inNew Play Control! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, it is instead controlled by tilting theWii Remote. Additionally, small bubbles holdBanana Bunches in many levels, and can be popped with aclap. Winged versions of these move around. In the reissue, bubbles in theOpening Ceremony andBanana Banquet also contain trappedHelper Monkeys.
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
While no regular bubbles appear inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story andMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey, an amoeba acting similar to a bubble containsStarlow at the start of the game, which Mario eventually pops, freeing her.
Mario Party series[edit]
Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]
- Main article:Bubble clone
Bubbles inMario Party: Island Tour are featured in a few capacities, all involvingBowser. Bowser uses a bubble machine to lock the fun of the Mario Party Islands away and constructBowser's Tower. He createsbubble clones to attack the player in mini-games. At the end of the mode, it is revealed the Bowser they fight is also a bubble clone, with the real Bowser ambushing the player and knocking them off the tower.
Mario Party 10[edit]
Bubbles appear in theMario Party 10 minigameBubble Squabble. The solo player must blow bubbles that will slowly float upwards towards the team players, who are bouncing onMushroom Trampolines. If all three of them get caught in bubbles and float away before the timer expires, the solo player wins. Just like in theNew Super Mario Bros. series, the team players can pop balloons to free trapped allies.
Mario Party: Star Rush[edit]
In certain minigames inMario Party: Star Rush, players enter in bubbles.
Super Mario Party[edit]
InSuper Mario Party, allies travel down in bubbles when summoned by the player using anAlly Phone or landing on anAlly Space. The bubble pops upon touching the ground.
Super Mario Party Jamboree /Super Mario Party Jamboree – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV[edit]
Bubbles appear inSuper Mario Party Jamboree's and itsNintendo Switch 2 port'sBowser Kaboom Squad mode. Players are placed in a bubble if they come into contact withImpostor Bowser or his fire. They can be revived directly by other players or coming in contact with aHeart.
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze[edit]
Air bubbles[5] are used inDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze to recover air while underwater. Generally, air bubbles sprout discretely from sunken diving helmets, and theKongs can run into them to restore air. In some levels, such asDeep Keep, they also encounter clusters of tiny bubbles gushing out of sea sponge. These rising columns of bubbles have the same effect on the characters.
Mario Sports Superstars[edit]
Bubbles inMario Sports Superstars appear inBaby Luigi'sEagle animation in the golf portion of the game, where, alongside Baby Luigi being in a bubble, various items, such ascoins,Super Mushrooms, andFire Flowers can be found in them, possibly referencing their appearances in bubbles inNew Super Mario Bros. U.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
Bubbles inDr. Mario World are stage features that first appear inWorld 2. A bubble will float to the top of the screen until it is obstructed by an object, and it may contain viruses or other objects. An object that can be matched withcapsules such as viruses orexploders will require matching with the capsules to pop the bubble, while in other instances including empty bubbles, just making a capsule match near the bubble will pop the bubble. A bubble can also be popped through use of a skill or item. A bubble that is currently floating will not react to anything else in the stage until it lands, except for when pushing the bubble upwards or blocking the bubble from floating upwards with a capsule. Normally, popping a bubble would fill the skill meter by one point, but popping an empty bubble fills the skill meter by two points. TheHammer Bro. assistant will affect the floating speed of the bubble when equipped by slowing down the floating.
Dr. Bowser Jr.'s andDr. Dolphin's skills involves bubbles. For Dr. Bowser Jr., his stage mode skill pops up to 10 bubbles while his versus mode skill covers up to 10 viruses in the opponent's field in bubbles. For Dr. Dolphin, its stage mode skill pops up to 4 bubbles (3 prior to version 2.2.0), while its versus mode skill covers up to 6 viruses inside bubbles. Although Dr. Dolphin skill involves less bubbles than Dr. Bowser Jr., it is compensated by a lower skill meter to allow for potentially more uses of the skill.Dr. Morton's skill in versus mode also involves bubbles (in addition to ice), in which he will cover some of the viruses inside bubbles. Bubbles may appear in some of the starting layouts in versus mode.
Mario Kart Tour[edit]
Bubbles inMario Kart Tour are thespecial skill ofBaby Peach,Baby Daisy,Baby Rosalina,Lemmy, and theCheep Cheep,Lemmy, andFish Bone Mii Racing Suits. When used, they envelop the driver, allowing them to sustain one hit from almost any obstacle without crashing, but popping upon collision. However, colliding with aClampy as it closes its valves will still cause the driver to spin out while the Bubble remains intact. The Bubble functions similarly to theBullet Bill in that it pulls the player forwards automatically when activated, though it is slower and does not harm other drivers, and the player can steer a little while using a Bubble. Bubbles automatically pop after ten seconds. When Bubble+ is active, the Bubble has a faster movement speed than normal. Drivers cannot perform any actions while in a Bubble, but they constantly receivebonus points from it to compensate. InFrenzy mode, the bubble functions like normal but enlarges briefly for each Frenzy action.
Starting from the version 3.0.0 update, bubbles no longer fill the items' slots while using it and can be popped earlier by constantly tapping the screen.
Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]
InMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, all of the heroes get encased in bubbles after restoringMt. Spout onTerra Flora. The bubbles lift everyone into the air before popping, causing them to fall to the ground.
Mario vs. Donkey Kong (Nintendo Switch)[edit]
In theNintendo Switch version ofMario vs. Donkey Kong, bubbles are only used in theCasual play style, and are used to transport the player back to the last activeCheckpoint Flag if they end up in situations where they would be normally defeated in Classic. However, the player has a limited supply of five bubbles, with one being used up if they are bubbled back to a checkpoint. Touching any hazard while having no bubbles left will cause the player to instead lose a life.
