TheBoo Moon Galaxy is agalaxy inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switchport, located inWorld 5. It is a haunted mansion-themed galaxy. The starting planet is completely pitch black and requires the player to find theLaunch Star in the maze. Its name is a portmanteau ofBoo and the phrase "blue moon". The level also haspoison that makesMario orLuigi lose a life instantly.Snake Blocks are found throughout the level. This is the only galaxy to involve use of theBoo Mushroom. Common enemies includeOctoboos and Boos.
There are noPrankster Comets for this galaxy until theGreen Stars are unlocked. It is one of five galaxies to contain threePower Stars without any boss battles or Prankster Comets, with the other four being theFluffy Bluff Galaxy,Cosmic Cove Galaxy,Space Storm Galaxy, andMelty Monster Galaxy.
Planets[edit]
Ghost Maze Planet[edit]
The Ghost Maze Planet[1] serves as the Galaxy's Starting Planet. As its name suggests, it is a dark maze wrapped around a sphere with a spotlight onMario and high walls. It is full ofBoos that chase Mario and try to harm him. This planet also has aWarp Pad leading to a Bonus Planet. The Launch Star, which Mario must take to make his way to the Sinking Swamp Planet inSilver Stars Pop-Up and (and, by extension,The Star in the Sinking Swamp), is found at the end of this planet. This planet also has aWarp Pipe which leads into an underground tower and is only accessible after completing the first mission. There are some pictures of Boos and1-Up Mushrooms in the walls. The doors that open when Mario approaches them make the same sound as theSuper Mario World doors.
Petit Porter Planet B[edit]
The Petit Porter Planet B[1] can be accessed via theteleporter on the first planet, serving as the Galaxy's Bonus Planet. It is inhabited byJack O'Goombas. If Mario defeats all of them within the time limit, he gets three1-Up Mushrooms.
Sinking Swamp[edit]
The Sinking Swamp is the largest planet in the galaxy. It is initially visited in the missionSilver Stars Pop-Up, and has a series ofSnake Blocks which start moving when Mario steps on them, and his landing spot also collapses into the swamp when he triggers the first set, forcing him to ride them. If Mario falls back he falls into the poisonous swamp and dies instantly. After the first set is another platform that contains aCheckpoint, though that platform collapses as well when Mario uses the second set. These Blocks lead Mario into the Launch Star and a hidden star.Octoboos inhabit this planet and block Mario's path. A? Coin present on the planet makes music notes appear which make three1-Up Mushrooms appear if Mario collects all of them. AComet Medal is also found on this planet when Mario is about to reach the Launch Star. This planet is similar to a book, as it folds when Mario steps on certain platforms. Mario can jump past the wedge that is used to change gravity directions with hisLong Jump; should this happen, however, he will get pulled past the wedge and then dragged down into the swamp.[2]
The planet is named in the missionThe Star in the Sinking Swamp.
The bumpmap used for the waves on the swamp uses an exact copy of the ghostly texture making up the course's background, and follow the same upward movement.[3] Due to being covered by the swamp texture, it is much more subtle, and near-invisible in still images.
Teeter-totter moon[edit]
Upon leaving the Sinking Swamp inSilver Stars Pop-Up, Mario lands on theteeter-totter moon, which acts as aSeesaw, tilting with his weight. This can possibly make him fall into space when the plumber stands on one of its sides too long. There are five yellowStar Chips on it that Mario needs to collect in order to form aLaunch Star that serves as his gateway to the Rise Picture Book Planet. The teeter-totter moon also appears in the ending credits of the game with a RedLuma, a Blue Luma and a Yellow Luma floating above it.
Rise Picture Book Planet[edit]
When Mario first lands on the Rise Picture Book Planet[1], he sees it is a giant book with grave drawings on it. But when he activates the switch, a wall raises revealing the three graves in 3D. Mario can jump on those to collect Silver Stars, Life Mushrooms and coins. The enemies encountered here areBoos. This planet is a pop-up book. When the player hits the ground pound switch a ticking noise plays and even when the pop-up book descends. As with the Sinking Swamp and the Teeter-totter moon, this planet is exclusive toSilver Stars Pop-Up.
Howling Tower[edit]
A tall, sidescroller planet. This is the only place in the game where Mario can find theBoo Mushroom to turn intoBoo Mario. Mario makes his way here viaWarp Pipe inHaunting the Howling Tower, and must use the Boo Mushroom to find his way to the top. The most common enemies here areOctoboos, who try to make Mario fall and lose his power-up. He will also encounterSpinecones while climbing the tower. There are also fans in here that generate wind that Mario is susceptible to with the Boo suit. At the top of the tower is the Power Star.
This planet is named in theHaunting the Howling Tower mission.
