Bonneter,Super Mario Odyssey

Bonneters,[1] also referred to asCourteous Bonneters,[2] are ghostly hat-like beings found in the region ofBonneton within theCap Kingdom ofSuper Mario Odyssey. They all have rounded bodies, trailing tails, hat-shaped heads, and big eyes with irises of various colors. As demonstrated byCappy, they can also take on the appearances of other hats, such as theMario Cap, andcapture other beings, both animate or inanimate. Male Bonneters have top hat-shaped heads with a more pronounced eyebrow ridge, while female Bonneters have cloche hat-shaped heads with ribbons and wingtip eyelashes. Cappy and his sister,Tiara, are shaped like a white top hat and a tiara, respectively.

There are two recurring groups ofPower Moons involving Bonneters after the player completesBowser's Moon Wedding:

  • The first set of Power Moons have instances in theSand Kingdom,Metro Kingdom,Snow Kingdom,Luncheon Kingdom, andMushroom Kingdom, and all of them start with the phrase "Hat-and-Seek:" These Power Moons are given out by a Bonneter hiding out as hats on a resident of that Kingdom. Their friend or friends have lost track of them when they were traveling and are worried. The Bonneter's eyes are visible from the back of the character's hat, and the player is able to initiate a conversation with that character when they normally cannot. Each time, the Bonneter givesMario a Power Moon after chatting, asking him not to tell their friend or friends. The Metro Kingdom has a second Power Moon provided this way, with a second Bonneter, only available after breaking that kingdom'sMoon Rock. Collecting five out of the six Power Moons of this group unlocks the "Hat-Seeking Missile" achievement when Mario next speaks toToadette.
  • The second set of Power Moons involves aBonneter biologist who appears in theWooded Kingdom, theLost Kingdom, the Snow Kingdom, andBowser's Kingdom. He wishes to see anUproot,Tropical Wiggler,Snow Cheep Cheep, orPokio, respectively, so that he can study that enemy. The player has to approach him while capturing that enemy. Afterward, they give Mario a Power Moon. The names of these Power Moons all start with "I Met a..." and end on the name of the enemy. There is aLochlady who wants to see a Lake Cheep Cheep in theLake Kingdom; she provides a Power Moon of this group using the same mechanic.

Bonneters operate aCrazy Cap store in the nearbyCascade Kingdom, being one of the three races to do so in kingdoms other than their own. The Bonneters of Crazy Cap stores have eyes colored to match their role in the store, so the one with the yellow hats have yellow eyes and the one with the purple hats has purple eyes.

Like many of the supporting characters, Bonneters will cower and refuse to talk to Mario if an enemy gets too close to them. This occurs even if Mario has captured the enemy.

Notes[edit]

  • Bonneters resemble and share similarities totsukumogami, a type ofyōkai from Japanese folklore.[16]
  • According toThe Art of Super Mario Odyssey, developers advanced an idea that Bowser was going to be assisted by an evil Bonneter serving as a villainous version of Cappy, allowing him to capture other characters and objects like Mario, but on later iterations of this idea, this character was replaced with a robotic top hat equipped with mechanical boxing gloves in the final game. Theoriginal concept for the game's final boss battle involved him capturingPrincess Peach and the two transforming into a Bowser-Peach hybrid.
  • Dancing Bonneters dance to the speed of the song that the player chooses in theMusic List.[17]
