Bomps areThwomp relatives that first appeared inSuper Mario 64. They are living, pushing, protruding stones that act as obstacles in many games.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario 64 /Super Mario 64 DS[edit]
InSuper Mario 64 andSuper Mario 64 DS, Bomps are known asMoving Bars and appear in two variants.[1] The first, also known as aPushy Wall,[2] appears in the courseWhomp's Fortress. At the beginning of the course, Pushy Walls go through a pattern of pushing, trying to shoveMario off the ledge. The beginning and end Pushy Walls are thinner and faster than the center one. Their eyes have blue irises with black pupils, and a thick black outline along the tops. The second variant of Moving Bar appears inTick Tock Clock, being eyeless and mechanical-looking. They have a spring-like recoil unlike the previous ones. Like the other pieces of the clock, they are affected by how Mario enters the clock and are used as platforms as well as obstacles. Objects similar to Moving Bars also appear as platforms inBowser in the Dark World andBowser in the Sky, although they again have slightly different sliding behavior.
InSuper Mario 64 DS, no Moving Bars have eyes, and their moving patterns have been altered to appear more in unison. The Moving Bars in Whomp's Fortress can also be destroyed if hit by a character powered up by amushroom.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
Bomps reappear inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, where they now more closely resembleThwomps and change their expression slightly as they move. They appear in theBuoy Base Galaxy and the frosty portion of theFreezeflame Galaxy, accessible in the missions "The Frozen Peak of Baron Brrr", "Purple Coins on the Summit", and "Conquering the Summit". A smaller version of Bomps, about two-thirds the size of the usual type, appears behind Freezeflame Galaxy's mountain, accessible in the latter two missions.
In this game, Bomps are two-sided, having a face on each end of their model.[3] Most of the time, the second face is inside the wall and cannot be seen from outside, but sometimes the second face will come out of the other side of the wall as if it were another Bomp. This can be seen with a few pairs near the peak of the ice mountain in the Freezeflame Galaxy.
Similar objects identified internally simply as moving rails[4] also appear as part ofthe Cyclone Stone; they are much smaller, lack faces, and float freely rather than being embedded in walls.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport, they appear with the same role and appearance as the normal-sized ones inSuper Mario Galaxy. They appear inFluffy Bluff Galaxy'sfirst mission and all missions ofThrowback Galaxy, the latter which is a remake of Whomp's Fortress. In the Fluffy Bluff Galaxy, Bomps can assist the player in climbing the slope where they are located, but in the Throwback Galaxy, they serve as an obstacle. Like before, similar objects appear inStone Cyclone Galaxy.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
Bomps make an appearance inPaper Mario: Sticker Star in theChomp Ruins, retaining their appearance inSuper Mario Galaxy. In the game, they are made of cardboard instead of stone. They come out from waterfalls and double doors. An upside-down Bomp appears as a scrap, and it must be flipped over usingpaperization so that Mario can reach theRuin Floor scrap.
Mario Party 10[edit]
Bomps made theirMario Party series debut inMario Party 10 in the minigameCliffside Crisis, where they serve as both obstacles and platforms for the players.
