Bomber Bills,[1][2] originally calledBanzai Bills and in one instanceBoomer Bills, are a larger variant ofBullet Bill debuting inSuper Mario World. Their attack pattern is usually being fired in a straight line, either from off-screen or sometimes fromBanzai Bill Cannons, with a firing sound playing to alert of their incoming presence. Bomber Bills can be dodged by player characters if they eitherjump on higherplatforms orduck in lower areas. Like most other Bullet Bill varieties, Bomber Bills can be defeated from only either astomp or aSuper Star, being unaffected byfireballs and immediately breaking out ofIce Balls. While Bomber Bills share the same black coloration and physical characteristics as Bullet Bills, Bomber Bills lack arms and have mouths in the form of sharp-toothed smiles. Their faces resemble the "shark face" nose art used by pilots in World War II. They are the second-largest derived species of Bullet Bills, after theKing Bill.

Super Mario World[edit]
Banzai Bills appear in threelevels ofSuper Mario World andits reissue. The first four appear inYoshi's Island 1; the next three inValley of Bowser 3, where there are no stationary platforms; and the last four inAwesome, in the area with purple pillars, platforms, and blueWarp Pipes. Banzai Bills are fired from somewhere offscreen and travel towardsMario in a straight line. Banzai Bills can be defeated either from either a jump, aSpin Jump, or aStar. Banzai Bills do not have a cosmeticFall alteration, unlikeBullet Bills, and Banzai Bills appear to be flatter horizontally than depicted in artwork due to theSuper Nintendo Entertainment System's limitations with sprites.
Due to the height of Banzai Bills, some of them in Yoshi's Island 1 cannot be jumped on directly and have to be dodged by either hiding in a gap or standing atop a ledge.[3] The first Banzai Bill is spawned in such a way that it can be jumped over normally,[4] or even ducked under, the second and third can be avoided by ducking under them, and the last one by jumping on to a ledge. Unlike many other enemies, undefeated Banzai Bills will not spawn when the player comes back to their spawn point from the right; they will only spawn when the player enters their spawn point from the left. This means that a Banzai Bill will never face right.
New Super Mario Bros.[edit]
Banzai Bills return as enemies inNew Super Mario Bros. Their design is based on their appearance inSuper Mario World, except they were given a slight purple hue, a sharper-looking smile, and red shadows under their eyes. The animation of Banzai Bills was changed to have them spin while moving. Unlike before, Banzai Bills are launched evidently fromBanzai Bill Cannons, with two appearing before theGoal Pole inWorld 7-5 andWorld 8-1. Besides jumping or invincibility, a Banzai Bill can also be defeated from aMega Mushroom.
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
Banzai Bills appear only in "The Fate of the Universe" ofBowser's Galaxy Reactor inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport. They lack the red highlights on their eyes, unlikeNew Super Mario Bros., and can no longer be defeated from a jump. Their mouths are also more rounded like theirSuper Mario World design. They are launched from Banzai Bill Cannons toward the end of the cylindrical planet.[5] Banzai Bills are fired in patterns and travel in rows and lines without homing in onMario orLuigi as Bullet Bills do.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]
Banzai Bills are enemies inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, with the same function and role as inNew Super Mario Bros. The game defined their current appearance, combining with red marks behind their eyes fromNew Super Mario Bros. with the rounded, recessed mouth fromSuper Mario Galaxy. The player character can jump on Banzai Bills to defeat them, also boosting them upward. Banzai Bills can be frozen byIce Balls only very briefly, like with most enlarged counterparts of enemies.
Banzai Bills are first seen inWorld 7-
Tower, where they are shot from hidden Banzai Bill Cannons high into the first area. Banzai Bills can be avoided by tilting the platform accordingly.[6]:138 Banzai Bills next appear inWorld 7-4, along with the only visible Banzai Bill Cannon. This game introduces two varieties, including ahoming variety and the even larger and indestructibleKing Bills, the latter being the name used for Banzai Bills in thePrima Player's Guide.[6]:16, 138
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
Banzai Bills are enemies inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and itsNintendo Switchport. They retain their attack patterns and durability fromSuper Mario Galaxy. They are first encountered in "Storming the Sky Fleet" ofSky Station Galaxy, where a long line of them are fired down the Sky Fleet Sheep and can be avoided by the player character until dropping into a hole. The player can undergo the effects of theRainbow Star in the area and touch Banzai Bills to destroy them, with severalStar Bits being released in the process.[7]Megahammer can shoot Banzai Bills out of its chest.
Banzai Bills appear in the following list of galaxies and missions. If no mission is stated, Banzai Bills appear during all missions:

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]
Banzai Bills are enemies inSuper Mario 3D Land. They are more similar to their appearance inSuper Mario World than inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2, due to lacking red highlights on their eyes, not spinning when fired, and being defeatable from a jump. Uniquely, Banzai Bills can be defeated instead by landing on them asStatue Mario or by havingBoomerang Mario throw aBoomerang at them. Banzai Bills first appear inWorld 8-5, having to be avoided by players as they traverseRed-Blue Panels. They return inSpecial 2-
Airship and are also encountered in an area withDonut Blocks in said level. Banzai Bills lastly appear inSpecial 4-3, where they are launched down a wooden bridge.
New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]
The Banzai Bills ofNew Super Mario Bros. 2 are based on their appearances in the previous twoNew Super Mario Bros. games, though they can nowturn gold from the effects of aGold Ring. Uniquely, another method for defeating Banzai Bills is by shooting gold fireballs at them asGold Mario. Banzai Bills are first encountered inWorld 5-5, where they are launched from a Banzai Bill Cannon toward the end. They are also inWorld 6-B, where they and Bullet Bills are fired at the player beyond theCheckpoint Flag during their ride on a moving, colored platform. Banzai Bills are also in theSecond Course of the downloadableCoin Challenge Pack B pack, appearing in the latter portion of the second area, as well as theThird Course of the downloadablePlatform Panic Pack, where they are launched throughout theSpine Coaster ride.
New Super Mario Bros. U /New Super Luigi U /New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]
Banzai Bills retain their role inNew Super Mario Bros. U,New Super Luigi U, andtheir port. They behave like they do inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii. The Banzai Bills ofNew Super Mario Bros. U appear only inScaling the Mountainside, where players can use platform pulleys toward the end to dodge them, and theirBanzai Bill Cannon is found just before the flagpole at the end. Banzai Bills and their corresponding Banzai Bill Cannons also appear in the level'sNew Super Luigi U analogue,Weighty Waddlewings, where they similarly have to be dodged using platform pulleys. Additionally, one cannon has Luigi's face instead of a skull. Also,New Super Luigi U features Banzai Bills inLarry's Trigger-Happy Castle, where they are launched from offscreen as the player character navigates onPara-Beetles andHeavy Para-Beetles, and jumping on the Banzai Bills is even required to land on some of the Para-Beetles.
Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Banzai Bills return inSuper Mario 3D World andits port, in addition to acat variety. Banzai Bills behave like they do inSuper Mario 3D Land, though retain their red highlights and emit a blue flame instead of their usual orange flame. Banzai Bills are first encountered inMystery House Mad Dash, where avoiding several of them is required along the way to the thirdGreen Star. The only other appearance of Banzai Bills is inBullet Bill Base, during the second part and after the cloud platforms.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Banzai Bills are featured in several kingdoms inSuper Mario Odyssey, including bonus rooms of theWooded Kingdom, theSnow Kingdom, theDark Side, and the Underground Moon Caverns in theMoon Kingdom, where they wear top hats. Banzai Bills are depicted with red shadows behind their eyes once again and do not spin while moving. Some Banzai Bills home on Mario, like Bull's-Eye Banzais, instead of moving in a straight line. Their music is similar toChargin' Chucks, becoming louder louder and more intense as Mario moves around with it. Banzai Bills are launched from Banzai Bill Cannons and destroy several objects along the path. Some Banzai Bills can becaptured usingCappy, giving Mario the ability to not only travel overpits but also to destroy stone blocks and defeat Bullet Bills harmlessly. Banzai Bills take longer to explode than Bullet Bills.
Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Banzai Bills are course elements in all game styles ofSuper Mario Maker 2, and bothBull's-Eye Banzais andCat Banzai Bills also appear. Banzai Bills are categorized under "Gizmos" despite being enemies. Banzai Bills retain their sprites in theSuper Mario World andSuper Mario 3D World from the respective game of origin. They received unique designs for theSuper Mario Bros. andSuper Mario Bros. 3 styles, not appearing in either game of origin. Although Banzai Bills do retain their design inNew Super Mario Bros. U, they were made shorter to be in line with the 2D styles. In theSuper Mario 3D World style, they can also be fired from Banzai Bill Cannons in the background, defeatGoombas upon hitting them, and be destroyed upon impact with a wall. A Banzai Bill approaching from the background can be swiped at byCat Mario to begin traveling the opposite direction.Link's shield can instantly defeat Banzai Bills.

One appears in the episode "Mama Luigi" of theSuper Mario World televsion series, whereMario lands into one's path by mistake after avoiding aKoopa Wizard. It is namedMagnum Bill, possibly a portmanteau of "Bullet Bill" and their Japanese name, "Magnum Killer".
Hotel Mario[edit]
Banzai Bills are enemies inLemmy's High-ate Regency Hotel ofHotel Mario. They resemble Bullet Bills more closely, even having their arms, and travel across the screen diagonally. They can be defeated from being jumped on and sometimes appear from defeating aFlying Goomba. Due to their small size and their design, they may be misnamed Bullet Bills.

In theSuper Smash Bros. series, Banzai Bills most commonly appear in stages. Banzai Bills mainly appear inSuper Smash Bros. Melee'sPrincess Peach's Castle stage, where they appear in set angles, from either the top, side, or diagonally; a firing sound and their traveling sound is an indicator of their approach, similar toSuper Mario World. Once burrowed into a castle wall, it digs into the wall and eventually explodes, dealing heavy damage to anyone caught within the explosion. Both of these actions are unlikeSuper Mario World. The explosion will also press any buttons in range, activating platforms and! Blocks. It also destroys or activates destructible items. The Banzai Bill also causes small damage and knockback to any players who touch it.Super Smash Bros. Melee also introduces theYoshi's Island stage, where a Banzai Bill appears in the background, using its sprite fromSuper Mario World. InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl,Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Banzai Bills retain their background appearance in the Yoshi's Island stage. InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Banzai Bills also reprise their role on the Princess Peach's Castle stage, but they now leave a longer lasting explosion than inSuper Smash Bros. Melee. Their design in bothSuper Smash Bros. games give their engine an original appearance, being gear shaped and gold in color.
Throughout the series, there are also collectible items of Banzai Bills. InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, there is an obtainabletrophy of a Banzai Bill. In earlier copies of the game, Banzai Bill's collectible trophy is instead called "Bullet Bill" when set to English, but it is correctly identified as Banzai Bill in Japanese, PAL, and later versions of the game. Another error is that the origin game is incorrectly marked asSuper Mario Bros. whenSuper Mario World is their actual first appearance. There is also a trophy of a Banzai Bill inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS /Wii U. InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, there is an Attack-type, Advanced classspirit of a Banzai Bill, which can be obtained from enhancing a Bullet Bill once it has reached level 99. When a Banzai Bill spirit is equipped, it gives the user the ability to cause damage by running into other players.
Banzai Bills are enemies inSmash Run mode inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, using their main design unlike inSuper Smash Bros. Melee. Like normal Bullet Bills, they attack by homing in on the player and flying toward them. If players touch Banzai Bills, they take fire damage and get knocked back. Banzai Bills have above-average health, although if they take a strong enough hit, they can get stunned and fall to the ground, open to attack, momentarily. Finally, if a Banzai Bill embeds itself into a wall, it explodes after a while, although it releases no power-ups.

Banzai Bills are obstacles in the minigameShoot Yer Mouth Off inMario Party 6. Despite Bullet Bills appearing elsewhere in the game, Banzai Bills share a name with them, and they spawn in Shoot Yer Mouth Off by saying "Bullet Bill" in the Mic.
Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]
A Banzai Bill is the main feature ofBanzai Bill's Mad Mountain inMario Party: Island Tour. Thedie of the board even depicts a red-faced Banzai Bill icon in place of a "6". Whenever the die lands on the Banzai Bill icon or a player lands on aBanzai Bill Space, a Banzai Bill is launched from its cannon on the lower path, and later the upper path after theSwitch Space is activated. Any players hit by the Banzai Bill are sent to the previous checkpoint. The records after completing the board tracks how many times a Banzai Bill had been launched and how many spaces back a player had been launched.

Banzai Bills are summoned byKamek after losing at least half of his health inKamek's Rocket Rampage inMario Party 10. Banzai Bills are larger and take away three points from whomever it hits, being more hazardous than Bullet Bills. A jet themed after a Banzai Bill can also be bought and used by players inAirship Central.
Super Mario Party Jamboree[edit]
Bomber Bills appear in the aptly named Bomber Bills stage of the Bowser Kaboom Squad mode inSuper Mario Party Jamboree, as well asFire Away. A mechanical Bomber Bill is used by the lone competitor in the minigameSunset Standoff, while artwork of a Bomber Bill can appear in the minigameBig-Top Quiz. This is the first time that the name "Bomber Bill" is used in a game.
In theNintendo Switch 2 Edition of the game, a Bomber Bill appears in the Sky-High Coaster ride in the Carnival Coaster mode as one of the main obstacles.
Dance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix[edit]
Banzai Bills are in the background of "Always Smiling", like Bullet Bills, inDance Dance Revolution: Mario Mix.
Mario Kart series[edit]
Banzai Bills uncommonly appear in theMario Kart series. They make their only physical appearances inMario Kart 7,Mario Kart Tour, andMario Kart World, where they appear inDS Airship Fortress as obstacles, replacing the Bullet Bills fired out of the cannons fromMario Kart DS. They travel in a straight line and any player who touches the Banzai Bill gets flipped over. InMario Kart Tour, Banzai Bills can be defeated when the player touches them whileinvincible, and they reward points when defeated. InMario Kart Tour, they also appear inWii Moonview Highway'sSteer Clear of Obstacles bonus challenge.
Three vehicles in theMario Kart series are designed after the Banzai Bill:Bowser Jr.'s unlockable kart inMario Kart: Double Dash!!, theBullet Blaster, theRoad Jetter fromMario Kart Arcade GP DX, which is also based on an airplane, and theBilldozer fromMario Kart World. The Bullet Blaster has three variants inMario Kart Tour, being theBull's-Eye Banzai, theSilver Bullet Blaster and theGold Bullet Blaster.
Super Princess Peach[edit]
Banzai Bills return as enemies inSuper Princess Peach. They can be defeated by swingingPerry at them, and can refill theVibe Gauge by pressing
at them. A relayed sound effect does not plays before a Banzai Bill appears on screen, unlikeSuper Mario World, which their appearance in the game is based on. Banzai Bills are first found inHoo's Wood 2-3, in the area with the second Toad. They return inGleam Glacier 6-3, firing atPrincess Peach from the right during an auto-sidescrolling section. Banzai Bills return inGiddy Sky 7-2, appearing throughout the fifth area. Lastly, inGiddy Sky 7-5, they appear randomly during the fifth windy segment, typically aiming at the player. This game also introduces a red, more dangerous variant of the Banzai Bill afflicted with rage calledMad Banzai Bills, which only appears in the levels unlocked after completing the game for the first time.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]
A Banzai Bill is a key item featured inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story andits remake.Private Goomp,Corporal Paraplonk andSergeant Guy are carrying aBanzai Bill Cannon inDimble Wood. Their plan is to launch a Banzai Bill at Bowser's Castle, after it had been conquered byFawful. Having no Banzai Bill, the three go looking for one, separate fromBowser, who learns that aWiggler owns a Banzai Bill. After being forced to eat thegiga-carrot, which Bowser planned to use for the Banzai Bill Cannon instead of a Banzai Bill. After defeating Wiggler, who has been furious at Bowser for yanking out the giga-carrot, Bowser obtains the Banzai Bill. After learning thesliding haymaker, Bowser returns to his three minions, who launch it at the conquered Bowser's Castle. The attack is ultimately unsuccessful, sinceMidbus and twoGoombas notice it headed their way and have the castle move up into the air to dodge it.
The Banzai Bill is used duringRoy'sBanzai Bill Thrill command in the remake'sBowser Jr.'s Journey mode.
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]
A Banzai Bill appears during the battle with theElite Trio inMario & Luigi: Dream Team. On a prior turn,Shy Guys can put a Banzai Bill in theSergeant Guy Cannon. When attacking,Sergeant Guyground pounds the cannon, firing the Banzai Bill. It chases after Mario, and he has to outrun it. If outran, the Banzai Bill touches down onto Sergeant Guy instead. Additionally, if Mario attacks the cannon before the Banzai Bill is fired, it causes a premature explosion that causes massive damage to all enemies.
The same occurs in theElite Trio X battle, but with theSergeant Guy Cannon X andSergeant Guy X.
Paper Mario series[edit]
Paper Mario: Sticker Star[edit]
A Banzai Bill is launched byBowser Jr. from hisairship ofBowser Jr.'s Flotilla inPaper Mario: Sticker Star, trying to prevent Mario andKersti from reachingBowser's Sky Castle. If one hitsMario, he loses 30HP. Banzai Bills are never actually fought, although this was planned during development.[8] A Banzai Bill Cannon is laterpaperized by Mario to shoot a Banzai Bill and create a hole in flotilla.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
Banzai Bills are usable as explosive missiles inPaper Mario: Color Splash. They are filled up withblack paint inBlack Bowser's Castle. When a Banzai Bill crashes, a dark skull cloud forms as a result, and black paint is scattered throughout an area. One Banzai Bill fills part ofSunglow Ridge with black paint. Like the previous game, Banzai Bills can take away 30 HP upon hitting Mario.
Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition[edit]
Banzai Bills appear as enemies inPuzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition. Their main attribute is Dark, while their sub-attribute is Light.
As enemies, the player does not fight Banzai Bills directly, fighting their Banzai Bill Cannons instead. Banzai Bills always begin the battle with first strike blows and attacks the player's team every single turn. However, they may also use a turn to use their SkillArmor Break, which increases their ATK while also lowering their defense. Because Banzai Bill Cannons are larger than the Bill Blasters, Banzai Bills are never allied with any other enemies. Interestingly, the Banzai Bill Cannons in this game are shaped like larger Bill Blasters.
As allies, Banzai Bills can use Armor Break to greatly reduce the defense of all the enemies on the field for two turns. The player can acquire a Banzai Bill by using fourFire Flowers on a Bullet Bill. The Banzai Bill will transform into aKing Bill when given six Fire Flowers. The Banzai Bills' strongest stat is their ATK with a rating of 6/6, while their HP is rather low with a rating of 2/6. Lastly, their RCV rating is 0/6. Banzai Bills useGreen Star Coins andGrand Green Star Coins to increase their Skill levels.
Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]
While Banzai Bills are not enemies inYoshi's Woolly World, one is featured as a decoration in the background ofBaby Bowser's room ofKing Bowser's Castle. It is composed of yarn, like most characters, and its closed teeth gives it a resemblance to Bullet Bills from theYoshi's Island series. The game has artwork of a Banzai Bill, despite its minor appearance.
Skylanders: SuperChargers[edit]
The Banzai Bill is a mod forHammer Slam Bowser's Clown Cruiser, theBanzai Bill Driller, inSkylanders: SuperChargers. It increases the top speed of the vehicle and gives the jet extra propellers under the wings.
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]

InMario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, a crashed Banzai Bill can also be seen in the background ofUndergarment Gulch, caught in a giant pair of underwear. After defeating theIcicle Golem, it can also be found outsidePeach's Castle, still caught in underwear, to whichBeep-0 comments, "When the annals of Banzai Bill are put to page, this will not be heralded as its finest hour." This is the first time a Banzai Bill has been shown with a different expression.
Additionally, the Bwahnzai Bill and Battlin' Billweapons are modeled after Banzai Bills.
Dr. Mario World[edit]
A Banzai Bill is an assistant inDr. Mario World. Unlike most other assistants, Banzai Bill can be obtained through battle boxes in higher tiers in the game's versus mode, similar toKing Bob-omb, where they can be obtained starting from Tier 5 onwards. In stage mode, their skill has a chance of granting an easier skill meter increase, in which it reduces a doctor's skill gauge by 10 points prior to version 2.2.0 or by 10% of the doctor's maximum skill gauge (rounded down to the nearest round number) since that version. If the skill gauge is reduced to a negative value this way, the doctor's skill gauge will not be able to fill. In versus mode, if the player sends viruses to the opponent, they grant a chance of sending an extra row of viruses when the doctor attacks the opponent. The activation chance was originally 50% maximum prior to version 1.2.0 but was changed to 30% maximum since that version.
WarioWare: Get It Together![edit]
Banzai Bills appear as enemies inWarioWare: Get It Together! during level 1 of theSuper Mario World microgame.
LEGOSuper Mario[edit]
Boomer Bills appear in theLEGOSuper Mario expansion set Boomer Bill Barrage. The set can be connected to the original LEGOSuper Mario set and adds two Boomer Bills held on a pole that can be spun to move the Boomer Bills in a circle, acting as an obstacle for Mario. This is the only time Banzai Bills are referred to as Boomer Bills.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]
A Bomber Bill is featured towards the end ofThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, where it is called as such for the first time. As Bowser and his army begin losing the fight against the film's heroes, a half-frozen Bowser (frozen from anIce Flower used byPrincess Peach) orders a strike on theMushroom Kingdom via the Bomber Bill. The Bomber Bill is launched, andMario uses theTanooki Suit to follow it via flying. Mario uses the suit's tail swipe ability to attack its left eye, angering it and causing it to take its focus away fromPeach's Castle, revealing that it is sentient. The Bomber Bill angrily chasesTanooki Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario leads it into the sameWarp Pipe that he emerged from at the beginning of the film. The Bomber Bill explodes inside of theWarp Zone, causing a massive interdimensional collapse that pulls elements of the Mushroom Kingdom intoBrooklyn,New York. The Bomber Bill is noticeably larger than the Banzai Bills in the games, and its size is roughly the same as theKing Bills. Additionally, dummy Bomber Bills appear on theTraining Course used to train Mario.[9]

Physical appearance[edit]
Bomber Bills, being a derivative species from the Bullet Bills, are large, anthropomorphic bullet enemies that can either be fired from aBanzai Bill Cannon or from a cannon off-screen, where the only cues the players receive that they are coming are the firing sounds heard. Due to their large size and immunity to most attacks, they often are required to be dodged either by maneuvering around them, jumping on higher ground, or by ducking if lower ground is available. In some games, Bomber Bills are weak to jumps on top of them like normal Bullet Bills, while other games, the only way to defeat them is if players run into them while they are invincible. The Bomber Bill retains most physical characteristics from Bullet Bills, which includes the bullet-like shape, the jet-black, shiny coloration, and angry eyes. However, key differences from Bullet Bills include the lack of arms on the Bomber Bill and that all Bomber Bills have mouths, which is constantly open and filled with sharp teeth, giving them a shark-like appearance. In most games afterNew Super Mario Bros., their design has been updated to add red highlights to their eyes, as well as their animation being tweaked so they twirl around when fired rather than their original static pose. In some games, notably theSuper Smash Bros. series andPaper Mario series, they have the ability to dig into walls and release a huge explosion.
In several games, Bullet Bills have appearances that more closely resemble Bomber Bills than they do typical Bullet Bills, including, but not limited to, many early appearances in theYoshi platforming series,Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, andSuper Mario 64. In these games, Bullet Bills are depicted with no arms and with an angry smile with sharp teeth; it is worth noting, however, that Bullet Bills' design fluctuated between whether or not they had a mouth or arms up untilSuper Mario 64 DS finalized their design.
With the exceptions ofSuper Mario World andSuper Mario Galaxy 2, Bomber Bills are typically encountered as late-game enemies and their appearance, alongside their Banzai Bill Cannon, usually signifies the end of the level. They are typically found in athletic-themed levels, that is, levels that focus on platforming on higher elevations with many pits. Bomber Bills are usually the last enemies encountered in levels that are featured around many Bullet Bills and Bill Blasters. The only games that feature Bomber Bills in an underground setting areSuper Mario World's Valley of Bowser 3,New Super Mario Bros. 2's Course 2 of the Platform Panic Pack, andSuper Mario Odyssey'sUnderground Moon Caverns.

Naming[edit]
Etymology[edit]
The original English namesake for the enemy, "banzai", comes from a Japanese interjection 「万歳」mainly used for jubilation or celebration, frequently translated as "Hooray!" and literally translated as "ten thousand years", as it is often used towish someone a long life, equivalent to the English phrase "Long live..." Their Japanese name, "Magnum", refers to their very large size in comparison to most enemies in theSuper Mario franchise. Most languages had adopted either the Japanese or English versions of the name, with a few exceptions, one example being the German name, "Riesen-Kugelwilli", meaning "Giant Bullet Willi" where "Willi" is the German equivalent of "Bill". Their current name referencesbomber airplanes, as their faces resemble stereotypical"nose art" often seen on such military aircraft during World War II, as well as their tendency to cause a large explosion when striking into a surface.
"Banzai Bill" was the enemy's primary English name for twenty-nine years. The name was retired from English material in the early 2020s, first in theLEGOSuper Mario set "Boomer Bill Barrage". In the 2023 filmThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, Bowser refers to the enemy as the "Bomber Bill", which has subsequently replaced uses of "Banzai Bill" on the English version of theMario Portal website, including for related subjects such as theBull's-Eye Bomber Bill,Gold Bomber Bill, andCat Bomber Bill. The Bomber Bill name saw its first use in a game withSuper Mario Party Jamboree. The reason for the change has not been publicly specified. However, it may have been related to the negative Western association between the word "banzai" and suicide attacks used by Japanese military during World War II, particularlykamikaze pilots. Most languages to have derived their name from "Banzai Bill" were also changed around this time.
