Bombs appear in theSuper Mario franchise as usable explosive objects, and they are based on a widely used cartoon gag that stylizes bombs as merely causing a small flare, unlike real-world bombs, and are most often depicted simply as stereotypical cherry bombs.Bob-ombs are living enemies based on this stylization as well.Mines can be considered their naval counterparts, although they do not always explode.

Bombs inMario's Bombs Away are objects thatMario has to deliver from onebuddy to another at a military outpost while taking caution not to ignite the bomb by having it touch the torches carried by enemies in the trees or the flames running along the spilled oil on the ground caused by theHeavy Smoker. If a bomb detonates, it explodes in Mario's face and cause the player to lose a try. Successfully delivered bombs will be passed to each of the five enemies in the trees; once five bombs have been placed, they will simultaneously explode and defeat the enemy troops.

Bombs inVS. Wrecking Crew are objects that can be hit by ahammer, causing a chain reaction that damages or destroys nearbywalls, opensdoors, and knocks enemies and rival players to the bottom of the stage. Bombs are inanimate objects, although the game's supplementary materials have repeatedly suggested them to be sentient beings, since they are portrayed with legs and a facial expression on the game's instruction card, and are classified as characters in the manual of the game'sArcade Archives release.[1] Bombs are first seen in Phase 3.

Bombs (referred to asdynamite)[2] appear also inWrecking Crew, though they first appear inPhase 1 instead, and hitting dynamite in a specific order reveals theGolden Hammer.

Bombs (also referred to astimebombs[3]) appear inYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic andSuper Mario Bros. 2 as objects that can be plucked fromgrass patches in the ground and thrown. Bombs start flashing a while after being pulled out of the ground and create a small explosion (containing the word "BOMB") afterward, during which the screen flashes white briefly and destroys any enemies orbrick walls immediately around it. However, the explosion can also harm the playable characters. Bombs are used byMouser to attack the player character, and can be defeated only by throwing his bombs back at Mouser so that they explode on him. The game introduces Bob-ombs, which have the same effect as regular bombs, except they start flashing immediately after being plucked. Original versions color the bombs red, but theSuper Mario All-Stars andSuper Mario Advance versions change their color to purple. Bombs in the latter version were given bouncier properties from being thrown.

Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

InSuper Mario Sunshine, theMonty Mole boss tossesBob-ombs to damage Mario. Spraying one with water disengages it and allows Mario to pick it up. Tossing the bomb back at the Monty Mole is the only way to damage it.

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Super Mario 3D World /Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Bombs inSuper Mario 3D World andits Nintendo Switch version are the form that Bob-ombs take when attacked, losing their feet, face, and wind-up key. Some actual bombs can be found lying on the ground and be carried and thrown by Mario, exploding upon contact with an object. There is also a bomb variant reminiscent of soccer balls called aKick Bomb. Rather than picking these up, Mario kicks them on contact, deflecting them. These soccer balls play an integral role in defeating Bowser in hisMuscle Car in World 1 and World Castle of the game.

It is found inUnithorn's Lair commonly, as it is used as a dud when opening crates. They can also be found randomly in somewooden chests. Different-looking bombs also appear as projectiles used by certain enemies. They are purple and have semi-realistic faces on them. They are mainly seen being shot out byAnkirons. Bombs are also dropped byCractyls, starting inGreenhorn Ruins. Mario & Sonic series[edit]

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games[edit]

Bombs inMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games are items inDream Events that are obtained randomly after picking up anItem Box in both versions. In theWii version, they are referred to as anExplosion. InDream Race, the player can place them on the ground behind them. They explode when run into and cause the character that does so to lose speed, but can be jumped over. The bombs remain on the course for the duration of the event, and their effect can be blocked if the player is using aStarman or invincibility from aChaos Emerald. Bombs also appear as an item inDream Platform, and can be used to destroy severalblocks on the layer directly underneath the player. In theNintendo DSversion, they perform a similar function inDream Race, but cause a larger explosion that can affect multiple players and explode automatically after some time, though their effect can be blocked by using aShield. They also appear in sets of three inDream Canoe, which will cause a character to lose three coins if caught in an explosion, though their effect an be avoided by using a Starman item. They also appear inDream Shooting, where they are obtained by shooting an Item Box and are used automatically, causing an explosion which damages all of the targets in the area. InDream Fencing,Dr. Eggman uses a bomb as part of hisSpecial Attack.

They also appear inSki Shooting as an item, where they will blow up all of the targets currently onscreen and earn the player the total points for shooting each individually, not including any penalties.

Bombs in the Wiiversion are items in variousDream Events, includingDream Alpine,Dream Ski Cross,Dream Snowboard Cross,Dream Short Track andDream Ice Hockey, where a bomb appears in front of all of the opponents when used, and will knock them down and cause them to lose speed if they are caught in the explosion. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team[edit]

Screenshot of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Mario and Luigi perform Bomb Derby inMario & Luigi: Dream Team

Bombs inMario & Luigi: Dream Team appear in a number of roles.

Shock Bombs are items, which can be used to make all enemiesdizzy.

Bombs first appear inDreamy Wakeport, in areas filled with otherwise indestructible boxes. A button in such an area can be pushed by leaning on it with theLuiginoid Formation's stack shape. This causes a bomb to drop from a pipe above Mario and theLuiginoids. Standing up as the bomb gets closer launches it forward, at one of multiple angles based on the timing. The bomb can destroy the boxes, and cause bombs in the box formation to explode as well. HittingLil' Massif with a bomb surprises him and launches him out of view. Missing the timing makes the bomb bounce off and fall off the screen, where it explodes harmlessly.

Bombs appear in theLuiginary Ball andLuiginary Stack games ofBattle Broque Madame as hazards. Touching a bomb disperses all Luiginoids, instantly ending the game.

In theBros. AttackBomb Derby, Luigi passes several bombs to Mario, who bats them into enemies with his hammer. The last bomb is larger than the others. These bombs are similar to Lemmy's fromNew Super Mario Bros. U.

Pelicrumps also carry bombs in their beaks, and if such a Pelicrump is slain, it will drop its bomb, damaging nearby enemies. Pelicrumps can also carry bombs for one of their attacks, dropping the bomb in front of their target, and the target must use his hammer to repel the bomb.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam[edit]

The Bomb Derby attack returns inMario & Luigi: Paper Jam, with the last bomb now dealing more damage than before while all the bombs deal fire-type damage.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership[edit]

Bomb Derby returns as a Bros. Attack inMario & Luigi: Brothership. However, the last bomb is replaced with a missile launcher that sends a rain of missiles into the enemies.

Bombs also appear when usingLuigi Logic during theSharpcask boss fight. Starting with the second time Luigi Logic is used, bombs must be avoided when stacking crates on top of Sharpcask. If a bomb hits the stack, a crate is destroyed.

Additionally, the Countdown to CrushBattle Plug causes a bomb to drop onto the enemies, dealing damage to them. This is akin to the RiskBadge combined with the Gold Badge inMario & Luigi: Dream Team, except the Bros. are immune to the bomb's explosion.

Yoshi's Woolly World /Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]

Bombs inYoshi's Woolly World andPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World are utilized byBomb Guys to attack, and they are thrown on an arc and remain in place after they land on the ground, exploding a while afterwards. Bombs explode prematurely if touched by Yoshi, damaging him, although Yoshi can grab the bombs with his tongue and hold them into his mouth for an unlimited time, then spit them atShy Guy towers or wooden log structures to collapse them.

Bombs are critical in the boss fight againstNaval Piranha. When one is spat into Naval Piranha's mouth, it explodes and reveals the plant's weak point.

Dr. Mario World[edit]

Dr. Lemmy's skill inDr. Mario World is to throw a bomb into the stage that explodes. The bomb takes after their appearance inNew Super Mario Bros. U. In stage mode, the explosion eliminatesbarrels in one hit, as well as any objects within the barrels. In versus mode, the bomb is not seen but the explosion encasesViruses in the opponents stage in barrels. The number of viruses affected in versus mode varies with Dr. Lemmy's skill level.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope[edit]

Bombs inMario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope appear only in theThe Last Spark Hunter DLC as attacks fromProto Mecha King Bob-omb andMecha King Bob-omb, causing explosions that deal area damage.

Princess Peach: Showtime![edit]

A single bomb appears inPrincess Peach: Showtime! It is found in the stageThe Case of the Rainy-Day Plot, where threeCriminals plan to use it to blow up the clock tower. After finding the bomb,Detective Peach and theJunior Detective throw it out the window of the clock tower, where it explodes, causing no harm.
