Bodyguards are a variety ofShymore that act asClaymorton's personal guards, appearing inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and itsremake. They are almost identical to normal Shymores, except they have marginally different stats and they do not give out experience points or coins when defeated. The reason they are Claymorton's bodyguards is that they were there when he took over theMushroom Castle. They still can be defeated with lightning magic, although they are more resistant to magic damage than their normal counterparts.
WhenMario first arrives in the throne room of the Mushroom Castle, he is confronted by six Bodyguards and Claymorton himself. Two of the Bodyguards attempt to attack Mario, but they are deflected away by the plumber. The four remaining Bodyguards and Claymorton then attack Mario, beginning the battle for the firstStar Piece. During the fight, Claymorton will sometimes jump off-screen, not returning until Mario has defeated all four Bodyguards. Claymorton also has the ability to summon four more Bodyguards after all the originals have been destroyed, and will repeatedly do so especially when he is low onHP. Mario cannot win the battle until all remaining Bodyguards are eliminated, even if Claymorton is defeated. After Claymorton is destroyed, the two remaining Bodyguards originally deflected by Mario will leave to inform Smithy of Claymorton's demise.
Bodyguards, labeled "Shysters" in parenthesis in thePlayer's Guide,[1] are also one of the few generic enemies made intoMachine Mades at theWeapon World.
