- “Your world is such a cool place! If only I weren't a...sign.”
- —Bill Board in theGrand Finale Galaxy,Super Mario Galaxy
TheBoards in theSuper Mario Galaxy games are four talking signposts. InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, they exclaim, "Hey!" atMario orLuigi before telling them how to perform a particular move each time they meet them. Some Boards appear in multiple locations, but their ability to transport themselves is not explored. The names of all four are puns on "billboard". One of the Boards (Bill Board) also appears inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport with the same role as in the first game.
There are passive, non-sentientsigns in both games that look identical to these Boards.
Boards[edit]
Gil Board[edit]
Gil Board is the first of the Boards to be encountered, and he claims to be famous. He appears only in theHoneyhive Galaxy, where he teaches Mario how towall-jump.
Bill Board[edit]
Bill Board is the second Board encountered and the Board with the most appearances. He teaches Mario how to roll on theStar Ball in theRolling Green Galaxy,Melty Molten Galaxy, andRolling Gizmo Galaxy. He also makes an appearance at the celebration in theGrand Finale Galaxy. Here, he tells Mario that he lives in a nice world, and that he would be able to enjoy it more if he were not a sign.
InSuper Mario Galaxy 2, Bill Board appears in theRolling Masterpiece Galaxy, once again teaching Mario how to roll on the Star Ball. He also appears inBattle Belt Galaxy, albiet unnamed, to explain the galaxy's premise of advancing exclusively through defeating all enemies in the current area. He is the only one of the four Boards to reappear.
When on the Star Ball, it is possible to knock Bill Board flat against the ground, though he rights himself shortly afterward.
Phil Board[edit]
Phil Board is the third Board encountered. He teaches Mario how to move when he is in abubble. Phil Board appears in theBubble Breeze Galaxy andBubble Blast Galaxy.
Jill Board[edit]
Jill Board is the fourth and final Board to be encountered. Her only appearance is inBoo's Boneyard Galaxy, in which she reminds the player of theBoo Mario controls. If Mario speaks to Jill Board while he is in his normal form, Jill Board states she talks only to Boos, and tells Mario to go away.
