Birdo, also self-referred to once by the shorthandBirdie, is a recurring character in theSuper Mario franchise. She is a prehistoric dinosaur,[1][2][3][4] identified in some early sources as a bird,[5][6] with a funnel-shaped mouth from which she can spiteggs. Her first appearance was as a boss inYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, which was rebranded asSuper Mario Bros. 2 in theWestern world. Birdo is considered to be one of the firsttransgender characters in video games.[7]
Since her first appearance, Birdo appeared in various spin-off games, appearing as a more neutral character. However, she continues to be occasionally classified as an enemy, as is the case withSuper Mario Chess and theSuper Mario Trading Card Collection, as well as her being grouped with typically antagonistic characters in the driver list ofMario Kart Tour. Some games portray her as a close friend or even significant other ofYoshi, while others show her simply allying with whoever catches her interest at that moment. Birdo has also been merchandised into figurines, plush toys, andamiibocards.
While Birdo is often portrayed as an individual character, there have also been many appearances of multiple Birdos that come in different colors and that sometimes have different characteristics. In most cases, these are depicted with the same feminine characteristics as the main Birdo.
History
Super Mario series
Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic /Super Mario Bros. 2 /Super Mario Advance

Birdo is a recurring miniboss inYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic andSuper Mario Bros. 2, usually appearing at the end of every level, with the exception of the third level in the first three worlds, as well asWorld 4-1. Birdo appears in three colors:Pink Birdo[8] shootseggs from her snout,Red Birdo[8] shoots eggs andfireballs, andGreen Birdo[8] only shoots fireballs. Green Birdo is depicted gray in the original inWorld 5-1 andWorld 7-1. Birdos originally had very small bows, which were enlarged in the remakes, more closely resembling the size in artwork, and are colored orange for the red and green Birdos. Birdo generally walks back and forth, spitting projectiles while facing the player character. Birdo can be defeated by throwing an object, usually hereggs back at her, though the green type can be hit only byMushroom Blocks. Most Birdos drop aCrystal Ball when defeated, except the Birdo enemy inWorld 4-3 and two Red Birdos inWorld 7-2, one of whom drops akey to the chamber with theMask Gate. Birdo physically holds the Crystal Ball, though spits it out of her snout when defeated in remakes instead. In original releases only, moving a far enough distance from the Mask Gate causes Birdo to respawn sans the Crystal Ball.
Birdo andOstro's names are mixed up in the cast roll in the original andSuper Mario All-Stars versions.[9][10] Later prints of the manual switch their names around as well, but keep the "birdetta" note on the one now labeled "Ostro" despite the inconsistency.
A robotic Birdo boss namedRobirdo appears in the remakeSuper Mario Advance, taking overMouser's position as the boss ofWorld 3. Unlike later games, Birdo does not make honking-like sounds but has dialogue,[11][12] portrayed byJen Taylor. The pink, red, and green types each have increasingly lower-pitched voices. The other Birdos have different dialogue lines, and one of Green Birdo's lines implies that she had been fought before.[13] The player is able to steal the bows from Red and Green Birdos and throw it against other enemies. If thrown against the Birdos, it simply returns to their heads.
BS Super Mario USA
Birdo had her first speaking role inBS Super Mario USA. Taking place sometime afterSuper Mario Bros. 2, the pink Birdo and her red and green friends, once again depicted as separate characters with different voices, again serve Wart and invade Subcon. Birdo is fought in the same way as in the predecessor, though this time Birdo may appear randomly and invincibly fly at the player. She can also throw multiple eggs in the air and sometimes can throw bigger ones. Like Wart andMouser, Birdo appears frequently as a card on the screen and can cast spells to switch the player character or change enemies into bombs. In the end, Birdo and her companions lose again against Mario and friends, although it is said that they would receive better treatment in the future. The voice actresses for all three Birdos are all "newhalf" (transgender or male-to-female crossdressing) performers from the Shiroi Heya nightclub in Tokyo'sShinjuku area.[14]
Super Mario Maker
Birdo is featured as acostume inSuper Mario Maker with a design loosely based onSuper Mario Bros. 2. It is unlocked by completing theNES REMIX (Super Mario Bros. 2) event course. The corresponding sound effects are also fromSuper Mario Bros. 2: Birdo's transformation sound is theMushroom power-up tune, losing a life plays the tune from said game, and clearing a course plays the theme when completing a level. Pressing
causes Birdo to wink at the camera while a heart appears above her.
Super Mario Maker 2
Birdo was introduced in the 3.0.0 update ofSuper Mario Maker 2 as a cameo. Her original sprite flashes on-screen when the mini-boss trigger is activated while under the effects of theSMB2 Mushroom. The music that plays is the generic boss theme fromSuper Mario Bros. 2.
The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

Multiple Birdos appear in various episodes ofThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show! as part of theKoopa Pack. They retain their ability to shoot eggs (this time having the ability to explode) out of their mouths fromSuper Mario Bros. 2, as well as gaining the ability of flight. Two Birdos with dragon wings appear in "On Her Majesty's Sewer Service" and "Quest for Pizza", with the former possessing immense strength and the latter being ridden by Alley Koop. Baby Birdos are also occasionally seen which are lighter in color, lack the ability to fly, and usually make "cheep" noises.
In the tie-in compilation albumSuper Mario Bros.: Favorite Mushroom Party Hits!!!, Mario dedicates the song "Mockingbird" byInez and Charlie Foxx to "Birdo lovers", mentioning that he likes his Birdos well-done with pasta.
In "Jungle Fever," King Koopa utilizes several of them as guards. One Birdo is able to use its egg to bring down anAlbatoss carrying Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad.
King Koopa deploys Birdos in "Toad Warriors". In order to make money, King Koopa steals the vast majority ofCar Land's spaghetti sauce supply, planning to sell it back at a very inflated price. King Koopa assigns three Birdos to act as the guns of his threeState Troopa cars by firing eggs at theRebel Fort while perched atop the vehicles. The three Birdos are later defeated by Luigi'sBob-ombs after attacking Mario and Toadstool.
During the events of "On Her Majesty's Sewer Service", King Koopa hires an enormous Birdo with wings and a "K" emblazoned on its chest. King Koopa,Mouser,Tryclyde, andKoopa Troopa embark to robSpy Land'sCoin supply fromFort Hard Knox, but are pursued by Mario and Luigi in theSpymobile. King Koopa, after several failed attempts to destroy the vehicle, call for the Birdo to lift the Spymobile from the road. The Birdo deposits the brothers in King Koopa's lair.
In "The Unzappables", a mustachioed Birdo wearing a top hat and a tuxedo can be seen dancing with anOstro in theKoopa Klub. This is a notable instance of a masculine Birdo.
In "Escape from Koopatraz", King Koopa includes one in the jury for the trial of Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad. The Birdo deliberates the decision with the three other members of the jury, until King Koopa threatens them with aPiranha Plant. They quickly condemn Princess Toadstool and her friends as guilty.
Super Mario Bros. (Valiant Comics)
In the comics "Bedtime for Drain-Head" and "Betrayal Most Proper," after losing control of theMushroom Kingdom, Bowser employed Birdos as castle guards. Mario battles these guards on two occasions. Under the delusion that he wasDirk Drain-Head in "Bedtime for Drain-Head," Mario enteredBowser's Castle to save Toad. After laying waste to a large number of enemies outside of the castle, a Birdo blocked Mario's path and shot eggs at him as he tried to enter the castle. However, Mario quickly picked them up and threw them back, defeating this Birdo similarly to the Birdo inSuper Mario Bros. 2.
The second encounter with Birdos occurs in "Betrayal Most Proper" as Mario andToad attempt to rescueWooster, who are then attacked by Birdos inBowser's Castle. When their movement becomes impaired by a conveyor belt moving in the opposite direction, the Birdos begin firing eggs. Rather than defeat the Birdos, they simply run off.
In "The Adventures of Dirk Drain-Head,"King Koopa claims to keep his Birdos in cages lined withBaroness Blue Blood comic book pages.
Super Mario Bros. & Friends: When I Grow Up
Birdo is one of the characters featured in the Zoo Keeper page ofSuper Mario Bros. & Friends: When I Grow Up,[15] depicting her ina cageMedia:ZooKeeper.png.
Super Mario (Kodansha manga)
Birdo is a major antagonist in theSuper Mario USA arc of theSuper Mario Kodansha manga. Despite one Birdo nicknamed "Cathie"[16] appearing throughout most of the issue, there are actually three Birdos in all. They all reveal to the Mario Bros. andToad that they all identify as males. This continues a long-running gag in theSuper Mario franchise where Birdo's gender identity is unknown.
Wario's Woods
Birdo, referred to by her original Japanese name Catherine in the game's instruction manual[17] appears as a supporting character inWario's Woods. She assistsToad and theSprite asWario sends out the monsters ofWario's Woods. Birdo encourages Toad and advises him to look out for Wario from the corner, but if Toad takes too long, Wario grabs Birdo and replaces her temporarily, before Birdo returns.
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars

Birdo is a boss inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars andthe remake, being noticeably much larger than normally depicted. Birdo is first found in an egg namedShelly inNimbus Castle duringValentina's control. While she is in Shelly, she asks Mario to play with her, and the battle starts when Mario agrees. Birdo hatches from Shelly after enough attacks. She attacks by spitting eggs at the group. After taking enough damage, Birdo can spit out singular eggs calledEggberts. Defending against these eggs cause them to bounce off the defending party member and surround Birdo's nest. Attacking the Eggberts cause them to explode and do heavy damage to Birdo. The reward for defeating Birdo is theCastle Key 2. Interacting with Shelly in the overworld after this point causes Birdo to say, "Don't forget about me!"
Mario Tennis series
Mario Tennis
Birdo appears in theNintendo 64 version ofMario Tennis and cameos in thehandheld version if theTransfer Pak is used. Birdo appears next toYoshi, and the two are seen to be very affectionate. Birdo is a speed player, giving her a fast running speed like Yoshi andBaby Mario. Birdo enters the court during the intro afterParatroopa but loses to Princess Peach. Birdo is later seen with Paratroopa and Yoshi, whenBowser interrupts the tennis match. Herown court can be unlocked by winning theStar Cup with Birdo in doubles. Also, when the player choosesDaisy in the double tournament mode, Birdo would be her default partner. When two players play as Birdo, the color palette changes to blue with a magenta ribbon. This game marks the first time Birdo has voice acting in a game outside of Japan, with her being portrayed byJessica Chisum. It also introduces heremblem, which is her ribbon.
Mario Power Tennis
Birdos of various colors appear in the background of various trophy cutscenes inMario Power Tennis, most notably the red Birdo inBowser's trophy acceptance cutscene.
Mario Tennis Open
Though Birdo does not physically appear, an unlockableMiioutfit based on her appears inMario Tennis Open, as well as her tennis racket, which can be bought. The Mii outfit is unlocked by winning a match against an Ace opponent in Exhibition mode.
Mario Tennis Aces
Birdo is a playable character of the All-Around type inMario Tennis Aces. She was available as a participation prize for the October online tournament[18] or from November 1, 2018 in the version 2.0.0 update. Birdo's emblem is on a bag available as a preorder bonus in Japan. Her vertical and horizontalTrick Shots are known as Perfect Pose and Cheer Step respectively. HerSpecial Shot, Airlift Extravaganza, features Birdo blowing a kiss before being tossed up in the air byFly Guys with pink stars, dots, and hearts surrounding her and her shot.
Mario Tennis Fever

Birdo returns inMario Tennis Fever as an unlockable playable character. She is unlocked by playing 30 tennis matches. Like inMario Tennis Aces, she is an All-Around character. Her strongest statistic is her speed, rated at 4 out of 5, while her weakest statistic is her spin, rated at 1.5 out of 5.[19] Her power and control are in between those, rated at 3.5 and 2.5, respectively.
Mario Golf series
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour
Birdo is first seen in the opening cutscence ofMario Golf: Toadstool Tour, playing golf withBoo atLakitu Valley. She is playable as a balanced character. This is the first game to use her current design and voice. Her nice shot swing produces a rainbow,[20] much like Yoshi's, although with more muted colors. During her trophy ceremony, she gives a wink that creates a floating heart to lift up her trophy, only for it to flicker and disappear, dropping the trophy and causing Birdo to have a surprised expression.
Mario Golf: Advance Tour
Birdo is one of the names on the score chart inMario Golf: Advance Tour.
Mario Golf: World Tour
Birdo is unlocked for play inMario Golf: World Tour after collecting 55Star Coins in Challenge Mode. She is the only unlockable character to also appear during the second introduction. Birdo's entry animation is her kissing her golf club. Birdo is balanced, has a driving and star driving distance of 212 and 267 yards, respectively, average control, a sweet spot going slightly above average, and a fade trajectory. She hits relatively high, so her shots are more affected by wind. Birdo hugs her club whenever she achieves a nice shot. When she gets a par, she wiggles her finger and flicks it, and when she gets a birdie she blows kisses and makes poses. Birdo's eagle, albatross, and hole-in-one animations show her kissing the camera, causing it to fall down. Birdo cries if she gets a bogey before quickly applying makeup. For double bogey or lower, Birdo shoots eggs at the screen before being knocked back by them. Birdo is in the females' changing room of the Castle Club, where she gives tips about handicap and perfect strokes. Miis can use her clubs and ball, as well as receive golf clothing based on her from the shop or by entering tournaments. Her costume is won if a Character Costume challenge is completed.
Mario Golf: Super Rush
Birdo is a non-playable character inMario Golf: Super Rush. She is the camp-house mama of the house inBonny Greens during Golf Adventure, where the rookies composed ofBoo,Chargin' Chuck,Toadette, and theMii player are staying. Birdo greets the player when they start their journey.
Super Smash Bros. series

In theSuper Smash Bros. series, Birdo debuted inSuper Smash Bros. Melee, as a stage element ofMushroom Kingdom II, which depicts Birdo in her two-dimensionalSuper Mario All-Stars sprite. Birdo comes out from the side of the stage and shoot eggs, hurting any player who comes in contact with them. Like inSuper Mario Bros. 2, these eggs could be jumped upon and picked up by the playable characters. Birdo can easily be destroyed by a strong attack, however. The Mushroom Kingdom II stage fromSuper Smash Bros. Melee returns inSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, and by extension, Birdo in herSuper Mario All-Stars-based sprite form.
Birdo has also appeared in the form of collectible items. InSuper Smash Bros. Melee, there is atrophy of Birdo that is obtained as a random drop, and unlocked alongside the trophy is the Mushroom Kingdom II stage. InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, a pink Birdo appears as a trophy, but unlike inSuper Smash Bros. Melee, it does not depict Birdo in a sprite-base form. InSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, Birdo appears in the form of a trophy again, and it depicts her winking and standing near aBirdo's Egg, as well as featuring information about her appearances inSuper Mario Bros. 2 andYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, Birdo appears as both an online profile icon and Ace-class Grab-type primaryspirit, depicting her artwork fromMario Party 7 and taking up two support slots; the spirit can be summoned using aT-Rex andStarly core.
InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, one of the names that can appear whenever players press the random button when they are naming their custom stage is "BIRDO".
Mario Kart series
Mario Kart: Double Dash!!
Birdo is a playable character inMario Kart: Double Dash!!. She is teamed with Yoshi by default, though she partners with Peach in the second title screen art. Birdo's special item is theBirdo's Egg, which has pink spots instead of green likeYoshi's Eggs. Birdo has an unlockable personalkart titled theTurbo Birdo. She and Yoshi are the staff ghost characters of bothDry Dry Desert andYoshi Circuit, and her emblem is shown throughout the former course.Mushroom City and Yoshi Circuit feature signs that read "Ribbon," as well as "Birdo watching" in much smaller letters in the center, and depict Birdo. Yoshi Circuit and the posters reappear inMario Kart DS, though Birdo does not physically appear.
Mario Kart Arcade GP 2

Mario Kart Wii
Birdo later appears inMario Kart Wii as a middleweight, unlockable character. Birdo has an equal balance of weight, top speed, and acceleration. However, when she goes off-road, she loses a moderate amount of speed. She is unlocked when the player defeats 250 other players in online racing, when the player does Time Trials on 16 different courses or when the player plays 1,350 races. Birdo shares the medium-sized group of karts and bikes, but all in her own favorite colors, like purple and magenta. Birdo receives a small weight and off-road boost, while her best bonus is the mini-turbo stat. Birdo's mini-turbo is tied withDiddy Kong's, while being inferior to that ofKoopa Troopa,Dry Bones,Wario, andDry Bowser. Birdo's mini turbo can be used with theWild Wing and theMach Bike to make it the strongest mini turbo in the middleweight class. Birdo is the only playable female character not to receive a speed bonus. Birdo is also the only playable character, besidesMiis, that is not used as a staff ghost.
Aside from the main Birdo, blue-colored Birdos often appear in audience bleachers.
Mario Kart 7
Birdos return as audience members inMario Kart 7.
Mario Kart 8 /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Although no Birdos themselves physically appear inMario Kart 8 or the base game ofMario Kart 8 Deluxe, a picture of Birdo along withPeach andDaisy appears on some of theWomen of Racing Organization banners seen onN64 Royal Raceway. She is also mentioned on the speakers inSunshine Airport.
Birdo appears as a playable character inMario Kart 8 Deluxe, being available in Wave 4 of theMario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass DLC. Most of her voice clips are reused fromMario Kart Wii, while some were reused fromMario Kart: Double Dash!! and some are new to the DLC. Similarly to Yoshi and Shy Guy, she has multiple differently-colored variants: pink, orange, yellow, blue, light blue, green, red, black, and white (a total of nine colors). She is once again a middleweight character, sharing statistics with Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, andPeachette. A CPU Birdo uses the same kart combination options as Yoshi, which include theStandard Kart,Mach 8,Standard Bike, andWild Wiggler. Yoshi is also her rival in Grand Prix. Art of Birdo also appears on banners inTour Sydney Sprint.
Mario Kart Tour
Birdo returns as a playable character inMario Kart Tour, introduced in the2019 Holiday Tour along with theTurbo Birdo andBirdo Cup. She is classified as a Super driver, and herspecial skill is the Birdo's Egg; while functionally identical to the Yoshi's Egg, it now uses a white, spotless design. Some of her voice clips are reused fromMario Kart: Double Dash!! andMario Golf: Toadstool Tour. AMii Racing Suit based on her debuted in the2022 Yoshi Tour.
Several differently-colored variants of Birdo also appear in the game as playable drivers, namely:
- Birdo (Light Blue), added in theVancouver Tour; uses Birdo's Egg as her special skill.
- Birdo (Yellow), added in the2020 Yoshi Tour; uses Birdo's Egg.
- Birdo (Black), added in the2021 Yoshi Tour; uses theBob-omb Cannon.
- Birdo (Blue), added in the2nd Anniversary Tour; uses theDash Ring.
- Birdo (White), added in the 2022 Yoshi Tour; uses theTriple Mushrooms.
- Birdo (Orange), added in the2023 Winter Tour; uses Birdo's Egg.
- Birdo (Red), added in thePrincess Tour; uses Birdo's Egg.
- Birdo (Green), added in theVacation Tour; uses theFire Flower.
All of these variants are Super drivers except for black and white, who are High-End drivers.
Mario Kart World
Birdo returns as an unlockable playable character inMario Kart World. In this game, she receives an updated model and new animations. She is unlocked by clearing theBanana Cup. She shares her stats withMario,Luigi,Hammer Bro,Penguin,Rocky Wrench, andPokey. Birdo has two alternate costumes that can be obtained by eatingDash Food, called Vacation and Pro Racer; unlike Yoshi and her appearance inMario Kart 8 Deluxe, she does not possess other colors for her alternate outfits.
The courseSalty Salty Speedway features a mermaid Birdo statue, referencing the statueThe Little Mermaid inCopenhagen,Denmark. A photo of this statue appears in the game's credits, labeled "Bir-maid?"; the mermaid Birdo is also seen on posters for a movie called "Salty Town Tales" inBoo Cinema. Additionally, a company calledBirdo Jewelry appears in the game as a sponsor, with a physical store located inCrown City.
Mario & Luigi series
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga /Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser's Minions
InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, whenCackletta attempted to steal Peach's voice to awaken theBeanstar, she accidentally took Birdo's voice, since Birdo was disguised as Peach. The events are not revealed to Mario and Luigi untilToadsworth and Peach explain it much later on. As they spoke, Birdo winks at two ofLady Lima'sPeas flirtatiously before chasing them.
At one point, Birdo becomesPopple's "Rookie," replacing the role ofBowser since she has a crush on him. The two are fought together byMario andLuigi.[21] A way that Birdo can attack is by drawing Mario or Luigi into her snout, appearing to chew him before spitting the brother out. The targeted brother can counterattack with hisHammer, which is the only way to avoid the move. Birdo sometimes spits out flaming eggs, which Mario or Luigi can dodge byjumping. Birdo can also inhale Popple to place him inside one of four protective egg shields,[22] though the other three containBob-ombs. If Popple is defeated first, Birdo becomes red and says, "You may have defeated my darling, but that's as far as you go!" Birdo becomes more powerful in her angered state, and her egg attack becomes not only faster but also targets both brothers. When both characters lose, Birdo is fired by Popple,[23] though Birdo knocks Popple away instantly, no longer interested in him. Birdo has a new endeavor of aiming for super-stardom and runs away, angry at Mario and Luigi. Birdo has dialogue during the battle against her and Popple, despite Cackletta accidentally stealing Birdo's voice.
Birdo returns in theremake. She now swallows a Mario Bro or Popple before spitting him out. Birdo now relays her flaming egg attack by winking at the targeted bro with a heart floating towards him. Birdo is inPopple's Partner, Part 2 ofMinion Quest: The Search for Bowser, revealing she was one of the characters who auditioned to be Popple's partner. Birdo and Popple then fightCaptain Goomba's squad. Birdo is a regular troop in the last wave as well as a ranged enemy. After Birdo and Popple are defeated, she drags him away.
Mario & Luigi: Brothership
Birdo makes an appearance inMario & Luigi: Brothership where she can be seen onMerrygo Island swooningly greeting Mario and Luigi after they mistake her for Princess Peach.
During the side questA Vision in Pink, a citizen on Merrygo Island asks Mario and Luigi to find Birdo for him. Birdo can be found onDinkee Islet on top of a large pile of rocks which Mario and Luigi must break with their hammers, although Birdo is reluctant to come down. Mario and Luigi then bring Birdo back to Merrygo Island where Birdo and the man who was looking for her mutually end their relationship.
If A Vision in Pink is not cleared before it expires, Birdo appears in the dance hall ofJellyfish Island. Birdo also makes a small appearance in the side questA Big Debate, where she joins Princess Peach,Starlow,Ireen,Technikki, and thegossips in a conversation about fashion.

Birdos in various colors are first seen during the opening cinematic ofMario Superstar Baseball, being part of the audience atMario Stadium. As a playable character, Birdo's batting is slightly above average, whilst her other stats fall slightly below average. Birdo'sStar Skill is theWeird Ball, which requires thePink Egg to use in Challenge Mode. Birdo can useSuction, allowing her to catch balls from distances away, andBody Check, allowing her to attack players on the base. She is a sub-captain of Yoshi's team in Challenge Mode and a selectable captain in Exhibition Mode. Birdo has good chemistry with Yoshi,Shy Guy, andPetey Piranha whilst having no bad chemistry with any character.
Mario Super Sluggers
Birdo is first seen in the opening cinematic ofMario Super Sluggers, riding a yacht with a few of the other playable characters to theBaseball Kingdom. Birdo is seen atYoshi Park, watching as Yoshi falls into a pipe as he tries to catch the ball with his tongue. Birdo is last seen on the bench at Mario Stadium, watching asLuigi makes the final out againstDonkey Kong, then Birdo celebrates with her teammates. In the cinematic after defeating Bowser in Challenge Mode, Birdo and other different colored members of her species celebrate with the other characters before they leave for the lights of the Baseball Kingdom to turn on at night.
Birdo is playable as a team captain. She gets a good boost in her batting and fielding skills, along with a small speed increase. She has great stamina and can do strong throws, but her pitching is low. Birdo's close play involves turning to the side and knocking the player away with her waist. Her Star moves include theCannon Swing andSuction Ball. Birdo has good chemistry with Daisy,Yoshi,Petey Piranha,Shy Guy, andToadette, and bad chemistry withTiny Kong, Peach,Wario,Waluigi andBlooper. In Challenge Mode, Birdo is stuck in a nearby tree, and tackling Bowser Jr. restores the rainbow bridge leading to her. Following a game ofPiranha Panic, the player can go across the constructed rainbow bridge to speak with Birdo and have her join as a team member.

Birdo is a non-playable character inSuper Mario Party. She gives out information about earlierMario Party entries and advice to the player. Birdo also hosts regular quiz sessions. In one of her lines, Birdo mentions that she had been playable when she was younger. Birdo also gives out her own stickers for use in the Sticker Gallery and the golden oar to the player to use in River Survival after receiving them.
The British English and Italian versions of the game refers to Birdo as male, while most other versions refer to her as female. The French and Chinese versions use ambiguous genders instead.

Birdo returns as a playable character inMario Party Superstars, being one of two playable characters not originally playable inMario Party 3, alongsideRosalina. She has a visual bug where at certain points during board gameplay, her snout will appear larger and then slightly shrink down afterward.

Birdo reappears as a playable character inSuper Mario Party Jamboree and itsNintendo Switch 2 enhanced port and retains many of her animations and sprites fromMario Party Superstars. Birdo returns inMario Strikers: Battle League, now selectable as a captain, via the version 1.3.0 update alongsideBowser Jr. as the last characters added to the roster. Her team number is 4, which isPetey Piranha's number inMario Strikers Charged. She is an Offensive type player and has the strongest shooting ability out of all playable characters while also having strong technique, though her strength and passing are among the worst in the game. Like in the previous game, she carries the ball in her snout when running with it. Unlike in the previous installments of theMario Strikers series, the player cannot have multiple Birdos on their team, like with Yoshi, Toad, andShy Guy, nor does her skin color change depending on the team she is in, though Birdo's bow will change color. HerHyper Strike, Jewel Dance, involves her shooting two crystalized eggs onto the field and one in front of her, which she kicks after performing a twirl, breaking it and revealing the soccer ball inside. The ball bounces into the other two eggs before flying towards the goal, which create shockwaves.
Mario Hoops 3-on-3
Birdo is an unlockable character inMario Hoops 3-on-3. She is unlocked when the player finishes the HardMushroom Cup with a bronze rank. She is an all-around type withEgg Shot as herSpecial Shot. Birdo can be seen with Yoshi in one of the screens of the Mario Stadium.

Super Paper Mario
InSuper Paper Mario, there is aSammer Guy namedSquatting Birdo, an obvious reference to Birdo and the species. Like a few other Sammer Guys, Squatting Birdo recognizes his namesake as an almost deity-like creature, and his ramblings when first encountered suggest that Birdos are flightless birds. This may have been a reference to the confusion between Birdo and the ostrich-like Ostro inSuper Mario Bros. 2.

Birdo is a non-playable character in theWii version ofMario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. Birdo is a VIP member, andMii outfit of her can be bought at the boutique for 100 points after finding her in an event. There is also a Birdo sticker that can be applied to the player's equipment.
In the Adventure Tours mode on thehandheld version, Birdo is seen inCubyrinth. She has apparently found Yoshi's missing drift board, but only gives it after losing to Yoshi inSki Cross Racing, claiming it is for elite athletes. Birdo can be rematched if the player desires.
Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games
Birdo is a rival in the London Party mode in theWii version ofMario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Birdo is faced in the 100m Freestyle event, and later inBadminton - Doubles with a blue Birdo. Birdos are goalies inFootball, where their color matches that of the team's. Birdo appears around the map regularly, challenging the character to a quiz or gossiping. The Mii costume of Birdo is retained, and she also receives a theme song.
Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games
Birdo is a rival of theLegends Showdown mode inMario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, appearing in Area 1 to face off againstSonic,Tails,Yoshi, andDonkey Kong inIce Hockey while accompanied by a blue, yellow, and green Birdo. Birdo's theme and her Mii costume return from the previous game.
Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games
Birdo makes her first playable appearance in theMario & Sonic series inMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, but she is only playable inMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for theNintendo 3DS, where she is exclusive to theArchery event. Her stats are strong skill and stamina with average speed and above average power make her a generally balanced character. She plays a main role in "Road To Rio" as she challenges the player on day 4 of Sonic's story in Archery. She also hosts some training sessions. Five unplayable and differently colored Birdos (red, blue, green, yellow, and light-blue) act as extra teammates for Daisy inFootball andFootball Plus.
Birdos appear in theMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for theWii U, but neither Birdo herself nor three differently colored Birdos (red, blue, and green) are playable, the former instead appearing by the sand statue where the Heroes Showdown multiplayer mode can be chosen and the latter instead appearing as selectable goalies inFootball andDuel Football. Birdo's Mii costume also reappears. Her stats are the same as inMario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for the 3DS, but her power has weakened and her speed has went up. In the game's opening, Birdo herself can be seen as a goalie in Duel Football, while other colored Birdos are used as goalies in the actual game.

The blue and red Birdos are goalies inFootball inMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. However, Birdo's color scheme is erroneously used for the head icon of the second team's Birdo instead of the red Birdo used in-game.
Captain Rainbow
Birdo is a damsel-in-distress who lives on Mimin Island, in the Kawaii Ouchi ("Cute Home") inCaptain Rainbow. Birdo's personality and interests are reflected in the design of the Kawaii Ouchi, which has mostly pink and red equipment decorated with many heart and ribbon emblems. At one point, Birdo is imprisoned by a robot jailer for using the female bathroom, due to the jailer not believing that Birdo is a woman. In order to help Birdo, Nick goes in the Kawaii Ouchi to find a blurred object (suggested to be a vibrator) under Birdo's pillow. After taking the object to the jailer, Nick proves that Birdo is honest, so she is let free. Birdo has developed a crush on Nick ever since being released and calls him her "boyfriend". Birdo helps Nick carry aStar to the altar on the top of Mimin Island, and if Nick allows Birdo's wish to be granted, she flies into the sky with the Star and disappears.

Minecraft
Birdo is featured as one of theSuper Mario-themed character skins in the Super Mario Mash-Up Pack, available in versions ofMinecraft released on Nintendo systems.
Mario Sports Superstars
Birdo is playable inMario Sports Superstars. She is a Balance type character in most sports, giving her well-rounded stats. Her stats are similar to Yoshi, but in soccer her finesse is higher, and in baseball and golf her power is stronger. In tennis, though, she is instead a Speed type player as in her previous appearance inMario Tennis for the Nintendo 64. Her speed allows her to run around the court quickly, but her power and spin are only average. In golf, her default drive is 217 yards, and her shots travel medium-high in a fade trajectory. Her emblem is once again her ribbon. Her special boost in horse racing is magenta and has sparkles and a bird tweet following it. Her special shot in baseball and soccer is similar to horse racing, but in baseball the ball is encased in aBirdo's Egg. Like all playable characters, Birdo receives fiveamiibo cards for each sport from thegame's series of amiibo cards. All her cards reuse artwork from previous games except tennis, where her artwork is new. When players tap in Birdo's cards, they receive jewel-themed gear that Birdo can optionally use, though the gear is only for aesthetic purposes. Players can also use jeweled gear for Birdo if they have unlocked it through purchasing randomly-packed digital cards.

General information
Physical description
Birdo and the rest of her species are dinosaurs with funnel-shaped mouths and a body structure similar to aYoshi, though slightly shorter and with a row of three spikes on the tail instead of the head. In several early illustrations, she is depicted as being orange instead of pink, and on the cover ofYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, she is depicted with distinct nostrils midway up her snout and what appears to be a tongue in her mouth, though neither of these traits has ever been shown again. In the various iterations ofSuper Mario Bros. 2, her snout ends with a small hole and is somewhat barrel-shaped, inverting while it is open; later games, however, use the latter shape in all situations, likely due to looking that way in her original artwork.
Birdo is mostly pink, with a rounded belly, red tail spikes and purple spots on her cheeks. She has purple eyes, each of which is framed by three long, thin eyelashes. She does not have hair, and instead wears a big red bow atop her head, which is usually her emblem. She has small but pointed claws, with four fingers on each hand and three toes on each foot. More recently, a large diamond ring set in gold is occasionally depicted on her left hand. She has a white belly like a Yoshi, as well as yellow-padded feet.
SinceMario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Birdo commonly wears purple eye makeup. In her team name, "Birdo Bows", fromMario Super Sluggers, she wears lipstick, which is odd because she does not use lipstick during the game, nor in most of her other appearances. In the Japanese commercial forSuper Mario All-Stars, she wears a white stole over an expensive-looking black dress along with a pearl necklace. Overall, however, Birdo's looks have not changed as drastically as many other characters have through the ages.

Personality
Birdo displays great determination and confidence in all aspects of her life. InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, Birdo revealed her goal of becoming a Superstar. Birdo has tackled a wide variety of sports and was the first known Birdo to emerge in the public spotlight inMario Tennis.
Birdo is somewhat vain, as she perceives herself to be very beautiful and feminine, and often strikes eccentric poses to show off her appearance. Also, she is portrayed to be very friendly, and enjoys being with the wholeSuper Mario crew. This is shown when losing a round of 18 inMario Golf: Toadstool Tour andMario Golf: World Tour. She also exudes charm and elegance as shown in many games whenever she wins or appears on-screen, where she waves and blows kisses frequently. Additionally, Birdo always wears a massive diamond ring on her finger. InMario Party 7 andMario Party 8, when Birdo gets aStar, she shows off this ring during one of her poses. Birdo appears to enjoy the spotlight, as shown in thePaper Mario series, where she occasionally puts on a singing or theatrical performance in front of Mario and other characters. Her penchant for singing is also alluded to inMario Kart Tour, where she is shown on banners advertising the Sydney Music Festival inSydney Sprint. According toPlay Nintendo, Birdo's favorite things are (in no particular order) friends, big red bows, and sparkly things.[27]
Birdo is very flirtatious and affectionate with others, even when she does not know them very well, as evidenced inFortune Street where her dialogue is very playful, flirty and endearing. This is also seen in Birdo's relationship withPopple inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga where she expresses her high opinion of love and romance.
Powers and abilities
In addition to eggs, Birdo has also shown the ability to utilize her snout in a manner similar to a vacuum, using it to suck things closer to herself or even swallow them; Birdo displays this ability inMario Superstar Baseball,Mario Strikers: Battle League, andMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, the last of which also has her leeching away the health of those she sucks up. On occasion, Birdo has enveloped people, including herself, in large eggs, in order to increase defense. She is often classified as all-around in sports games, where she has a great deal of strength. She also has shown this strength when angered inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, when, after discovering that Popple had not actually love her, she knocks him right through a wall, indicating she has super-strength, as well as in theMario Baseball series where she has a strong throwing arm and has batting as her strongest stat.
InMario Golf: Toadstool Tour, hitting a nice shot while playing as her will cause a rainbow to form similar to Yoshi's, but rainbow abilities have since then not been seen. Birdo also has some hints of heart-based power similar to Princess Peach as shown inMario Golf: Toadstool Tour in her victory cut-scene andMario Hoops 3-on-3 in her special shot. However, they are not as strong or as useful as Peach's hearts. This often has comedic results, such as when they only succeed in charming Birdo's golf trophy into the air for a short time until it falls down again, to its owner's great surprise.
Gender
According to the North American instruction booklet ofSuper Mario Bros. 2 (pg. 27):[28]
He thinks he is a girl and he spits eggs from his mouth. He'd rather be called “birdetta.“[sic]
This statement applies to all translations of the title. Throughout the official guide, Birdo is also consistently referred to as a "he".[5] The stance of this manual is shared by theYume Kojo: Doki Doki Panic manual,Super Smash Bros. Melee (when set to Japanese), andItadaki Street DS. In Japanese, Birdo is said to be a male who believes she is a female and prefers to be called by a nickname, "Cathie", rather than her real name "Catherine".[29] InSuper Smash Bros. Brawl, Birdo'strophy description describes the character as "gender indeterminate", and uses the pronoun "it" rather than gender-specific pronouns such as "he" or "she" (in contrast toSuper Smash Bros. Although the manual forSuper Mario Bros. 2 and her trophy inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl suggest that Birdo prefers the name "Birdetta", she has never referred to herself by that name, and has introduced herself as Birdo on multiple occasions. In most of her Japanese-language appearances, Birdo uses the feminine personal pronounatashi, but she has also used the more neutralwatashi in some earlier instances, including an ad spot forSuper Mario USA and inSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars and itsremake.[14] She has also more recently usedwatashi inMario & Luigi: Brothership.[31]
In games for theSatellaview, Birdo is consistently shown as anokama, a Japanese term that usually refers to a masculine man that dresses as a woman, but is also used as a slur interchangeably to refer to trans women, gay men, crossdressing men, and effeminate men.[32] InSatella-Q, a picture of Birdo is shown with a masculine, humanoid torso. Meanwhile, inBS Super Mario USA, all three Birdos are shown making typically feminine poses in the world title cards but are given deep voices provided by Jun Donna, Rika and Akemi. All three performers self-identify as "newhalves," a Japanese slang term fortransgender women (particularly those who have not undergone sex reassignment surgery).[14]
Responding to a question from a writer for Netorabo, a Japanese news site covering Internet culture, a representative for Nintendo stated in 2015 that Birdo is neither male nor female, but "someone who believes they are a girl" (「『男』『女』ではなく、あくまでも『女の子と思い込んでいる』」). They added that this also applied toYoshi, and that "Yoshi is Yoshi, and Birdo is Birdo".[33] In contrast, Birdo is referred to as a "pink girl" (「ピンクの娘」) in the Japanese script ofMario & Luigi: Brothership.[34]
Nintendo of America usually refers to Birdo as female. The femininity of Birdo is implied inMario Kart 8, where she appears on "Women of Racing Organization" advertisements inN64 Royal Raceway along with other female characters, and inSunshine Airport, where she is referred to on the broadcasting system as "Ms. Birdo". In the North American instruction booklet ofMario Golf: Toadstool Tour, every female character has a pink dot behind them, including Birdo. Nintendo of Europe usually refers to Birdo as female as well; however, the character is referred to with masculine pronouns in the British English localizations ofMario Tennis Aces[35] andSuper Mario Party (other localizations of these games use feminine pronouns for her instead, besides the French and Chinese translations which are ambiguous). Additionally, inMario Super Sluggers,Peach'sHeart Swing, which stuns male characters and characters of unknown gender, does not stun female characters, including Birdo. InMario & Luigi: Brothership, following the Japanese script, Birdo is referred to as a girl in all localizations except for Korean, which avoids gendering her entirely.
InMario Tennis andSuper Mario Advance, Birdo is given a feminine voice, with the latter being provided by the voice actress ofPrincess Peach andPrincess Daisy at the time,Jen Taylor. However, starting with her appearance inMario Golf: Toadstool Tour, she is given a deeper-sounding voice instead, resembling honks from a brass instrument.
The confusion surrounding Birdo's gender has also been addressed in a light-hearted matter, such as whenPopple pauses before settling on calling Birdo a "dame" inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. The description of Birdo on the JapaneseMario Kart: Double Dash!! website jokes about the matter ("Birdo appears to be Yoshi's girlfriend, but is actually his boyfriend!?"),[36] as do the Spanish website and manual forSuper Mario Strikers ("Birdo is your man... well, or woman."). InPaper Mario: Sticker Star, the first lyrics of Birdo's serenade allude to the gender confusion by saying, "Heart of a woman, heart of a man... Both can know of love's grace..."
In the gameCaptain Rainbow, Birdo is heard with a deep, male voice which gets high-pitched when she gets angry or excited. Additionally, in the game's second trailer,Little Mac speaks about Birdo, calling her a "young lady," only to take a short break and ponder. His final verdict is, "Depending on one's view point, she is a young lady." In the game, Birdo's indeterminate gender also forms the basis for a side quest to find proof that she is a girl (which is found, but censored). Overall, it is suggested that she is a transgender woman.
Relationship with Yoshi

Birdo has a special relationship with Yoshi, beginning since her debut inSuper Mario-kun, where she falls for Yoshi and, despite her clingy obsession for him, eventually has her feelings reciprocated. In theSuper Mario Kodansha manga, Birdo is shown an image of Yoshi byMario inSuper Mario USA and develops a crush on him, though this time Yoshi is uncomfortable about it.
In the games, they are often partners in sports and party titles. Despite this, Birdo has never appeared alongside Yoshi in aYoshi game.
InMario Kart: Double Dash!!, the two are partners and share a similar Special Item. On the official Japanese site forMario Kart: Double Dash!!, the description for Catherine states she "appears to be Yoshi's girlfriend, but is actually his boyfriend!?" (「ヨッシーの彼女に見えて実は彼氏!?」)[36]
InMario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, they share a tennis court and are default partners; the two are seen to be very affectionate. In theMario Baseball series, they share goodchemistry with each other, and she is the Sub-Captain ofYoshi's team. The two also share the sameSpecial Orb inMario Party 7.

The English name "Birdo" derives from "bird," a potential allusion to her association with eggs. However, it was not immediately conveyed that this was her name when the character was first introduced tothe West. Unlike the originalYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, the names for Birdo and the ostrich enemyOstro are swapped in the staff rolls forSuper Mario Bros. 2 andSuper Mario All-Stars[37][38] and this swap is reflected in the localized instruction booklets for these games as well across all languages. Subsequent media to feature these characters quickly rectified this misapplication, with this character referred to as "Birdo" inThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and other pieces of promotional material fromSuper Mario Bros. 2. The Japanese name for Birdo is the feminine European name "Catherine"「キャサリン」(Kyasarin) and she is referred to by this name in localizations forWario's Woods. In some of the paratext forYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic,Super Mario USA, andSuper Mario Advance, which features different iterations of Birdo with different colors and means of attack, she is referred to as the "Pink Birdo."[39][40][41]
In the English instruction booklet forSuper Mario Bros. 2 and most other localizations, Birdo is asserted to prefer going by the name "birdetta." However, this name isarchaic, as it does not appear outside of the instruction booklets forSuper Mario Bros. 2 and hertrophy description inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl. In most scenarios where the character speaks, she refers to herself as "Birdo." InMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, she prefers going by the diminutive nickname "Birdie."
