Big Star Doors,[1] orStar Doors, are a special sliding type of★ door inSuper Mario 64 andSuper Mario 64 DS. They restrict access to areas that are mandatory for progressing in the plot, usually to a location withBowser, but still require a number ofPower Stars to unlock, like ★ doors. In the remake, onlyMario can unlock a Big Star Door, but once it is unlocked, any character can enter it.
There are four Big Star Doors. The one on the first floor leads toBowser in the Dark World and requires eight Power Stars to open (12 in the remake). The second one is on the basement floor and leads toDire, Dire Docks andBowser in the Fire Sea, although the door requires 30 Power Stars to open. The third Big Star Door is at the top of a staircase on the second floor and requires 50 Power Stars to open, allowing access toTick Tock Clock,Rainbow Ride, andWing Mario Over the Rainbow afterward. The last door leads to thefinal battle with Bowser, and although it has no Power Star requirement, it has anendless staircase behind it unless Mario has at least 70 Power Stars (80 in the remake). In the remake, the other player characters are always met by the endless staircase, regardless of how many Power Stars they have.
