Big Spinies are a larger variant ofSpiny that appears throughout theSuper Mario franchise.
History[edit]
Mario Party 9[edit]
Big Spinies appear in a single minigame,Sock It to Lakitu, onceLakitu's health is reduced by half. Lakitu starts throwing Big Spinies, which act the same way as normal Spinies in the boss fight, except that players hit by them lose two points.
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS /Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
They reappear inSuper Mario Maker,Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, andSuper Mario Maker 2; the player can enlarge a normal Spiny by using aSuper Mushroom. Winged Big Spinies will act the same as their smaller counterparts.
Super Mario Run[edit]
Big Spinies are also found inSuper Mario Run, first appearing in World 3-1:Big Spiny Blitz. They behave like regular Spinies from 2DSuper Mario platformers. Big Spinies lack an entry in the Notebook menu, and are considered to be regular Spinies in regards toenemy leveling. The Notebook's description of Spiny references Spinies being larger in thedesert, alluding to Big Spiny Blitz.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]

A single Big Spiny appears inPaper Mario: Color Splash as a mini boss inKiwano Temple, where it guards aMini Paint Star. In battle, it can charge up its attacks and fly at Mario to do damage.Swoops can assist the Big Spiny in battle if it is not flipped over. The charged attack can be jumped over with the Frog Suit. However, if it is flipped over with a POW Block, it will retaliate with a jumping slam based on Mario's ownSpin Jump that can't be dodged in any way.
If the player flees successfully, the Big Spiny will remain in front of the Yellow Mini Paint Star. The player can bypass the Big Spiny; however, it will challenge Mario once again should he return. Also, passing the Big Spiny without defeating him will only allow for the Yellow Mini Paint Star to be collected as the platform leading to the red one will not lower.
