Making their game debut inPaper Mario: Sticker Star, one Big Buzzy Beetle acts as a mini-boss ofHither Thither Hill.Mario must defeat it to continue his adventure. In battle, the Big Buzzy Beetle can go into its shell and ram into Mario, just like normal Buzzy Beetles. However, the Big Buzzy Beetle is impervious to all attacks (except forIce Flowers, which will damage it), with its only weak spot being its underbelly. The boss must be flipped over by either successfully jumping on it or by using aPOW Blocksticker. When it is upside-down, the Big Buzzy Beetle can ram into Mario again and bring itself up. It has 40HP, and drops anHP-Up Heart upon defeat. It is also the only optional boss in the game.
Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]
A single Big Buzzy Beetle appears inPaper Mario: Color Splash, serving as theBuzzy Beetle Tower base inthe Emerald Circus. It can be flipped over by using a POW Blockcard.
Super Mario series[edit]
New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]
Big Buzzy Beetles are enemies inNew Super Mario Bros. U. They act as both enemies and platforms. Mario can jump and stand on top of a Big Buzzy Beetle's shell while it is floating onlava when it rises, showing them to be immune to lava. When not floating on lava and when it is not stomped on, it just retreats into the shell. Big Buzzy Beetles are encountered inRising Tides of Lava, and they are one of the few enemies that do not reappear inNew Super Luigi U.
Super Mario Maker /Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS /Super Mario Maker 2[edit]
Big Buzzy Beetles are present yet again inSuper Mario Maker,Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, andSuper Mario Maker 2. The player can enlarge a normal Buzzy Beetle with aSuper Mushroom, and thus the implication of Big Buzzy Beetles within the game. Big Buzzy Beetles are no longer immune to lava like inNew Super Mario Bros. U; they simply sink into the lava to be consistent with other enemies.
Unused appearances[edit]
Sprites found in prototype revisions ofSuper Mario World include sprites for large Buzzy Beetles, but it is not included in the final game in any way.[1]
A giant Buzzy Beetle appears as anunused enemy inNew Super Mario Bros. Wii, suggesting that they were going to appear during gameplay, but were either never implemented into any level or removed before the final release. However, it acts somewhat buggy. It is not affected by gravity, andFireballs orPenguin Mario's slide attack phase right through it; the only way to actually defeat it is with aPOW Block.[2]
