Bertha is aBig Cheep Cheep who appears in theSuper Mario Bros. comics. Her appearance differs between the two comics that she appears in. In "Love Flounders," she is orange in color with yellow lips and fins. In "Fins and Roses," however, her body is colored red while her lips and fins are white, more closely resembling theBig Cheep Cheep'sartwork inSuper Mario Bros. 3.

"Love Flounders"[edit]

Bertha is first mentioned in theSuper Mario Bros. comic "Love Flounders," whereStanley the Talking Fish tellsMario, who is in aFrog Suit and looking for somechuckberries to give toPrincess Toadstool, that he asked her out on a date. However, as he has broken up with her and is now datingSmookers, he asks Mario to break his date for him.

Bertha then appears, asking Mario if she is her new boyfriend, with herBaby Cheep commenting that he looks "cute." Mario, surprised by this, asks Bertha why he is her boyfriend, to which her Baby Cheep replies that Stanley did, with Bertha explaining that he told him that he begged him to let him go out with her. Mario begins swimming away from her, with her in pursuit. Mario eventually manages to hide in some seaweed and escapes from Bertha and her Baby Cheep.

Bertha later appears after Mario escapes from the fish chasing him with the chuckberries, where he runs into her as he is about to enter theWarp Pipe back to theMushroom Castle. She then proceeds to kiss him, with Mario protesting. However, this causes Mario to lose the Frog Suit, shocking Bertha. She then assumes that Stanley had lied to her that he was a frog so that he could get rid of her and that he hates her like everyone else. Mario prepares, but notices Bertha sulking and gives her the chuckberries. He explains to her that, though she does not love her, he decides to have lunch with her so that they can say terrible things about Stanley. When asking what else he would like her to do, he asks her to beat up Stanley, who had been dumped by Smookers.

"Fins and Roses"[edit]

Bertha then appears in "Fins and Roses," where she grabsWendy as she chases after Stanley the Talking Fish, telling her to get her own boyfriend. Stanley explains to her that she was flirting with her, and an angered Bertha proceeds to kick her back on her raft. Stanley then explains that Bertha is an old girlfriend who has trouble letting go, though Wendy, irritated by Stanley, grabs a bazooka and starts trying to blast him.

Bertha later appears after Wendy tries to blast Stanley with her bazooka at the party he arranged for Wendy, with her believing that it was arranged for her. She then breaks Wendy's bazooka before kicking her back to surface again.

Bertha last appears when Stanley flees into the water from Wendy as she uses her last bazooka shot on him. He bumps into her and explains that Wendy tried to seduce him and bribe him with a "Standard Military-Issue Double-Charge Bomb." Bertha, picking up thebomb Stanley from her earlier, kicks it back to the surface, landing on and blowing up Wendy's raft.

Naming[edit]

Bertha's name is a reference to "Big Bertha," one of the original names for theBig Cheep Cheep.
