Bee Flies[1] are large flies found in only two games—Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins andWario Land: Super Mario Land 3. In both of these games, Bee Flies are rather rare and can technically deal no damage, since they flee when approached. However, they can be jumped on.

History[edit]

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]

Bee Flies first appear inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, where they can be found in only two levels—theLeaf Course of theTree Zone and theFlower Course and theFireplace Course of theMacro Zone. They typically remain in one place when undisturbed, but they quickly fly off in a diagonal manner when approached byMario. Their runaway flight is just as fast as Mario's top running speed.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3[edit]

Bee Flies reappear inWario Land: Super Mario Land 3, behaving similarly to their previous incarnation. They are found in only two courses—theSS Tea Cup levelsCourse No.26 andCourse No.27. They are also given an animation when idle and fly away in a curved angle. They do not move ifWario crouches, which makes it possible for Wario to jump on them. If Wario manages to jump on one, a10 Gold Coin appears. They are said to be companions of theirSuper Mario Land 2 counterparts.[2]

Although the sprites of Bee Flies are nearly identical inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins andWario Land: Super Mario Land 3, artwork from each game reveals a distinct difference which is not conveyed by their in-game sprites: Bee Flies fromSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins have a proboscis, but their counterparts fromWario Land: Super Mario Land 3 have a tongue sticking out of a regular mouth instead.

A fleeing enemy!?

When Mario gets close to this fly, it runs away at once without attacking, and it is not clear whether it is an enemy or not. It is harmless if left alone, but if you really want to defeat it, use a fireball to do so.

Naming[edit]

Unlike most mainlineSuper Mario titles,Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins did not receive officially localized enemy indexes at the time of its release on the Game Boy and not all enemies are listed in its instruction booklets. Consequentially, most available non-Japanese names come from localizations of theSuper Mario Bros. Encyclopedia. The English version of the book refers to the enemy as "Be,"[4] a romanization of the enemy's Japanese name fromWario Land: Super Mario Land 3 that was also the basis of its article title on the Super Mario Wiki from 2010 to 2022.
