Bead
Beads are collectibles inYoshi's Woolly World andPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, similar to theitems of the same name inKirby's Epic Yarn. These beads replacecoins from the other games of theYoshi franchise. Unlike coins, which use color to indicate value, the size of the beads matters: small beads are worth one, medium beads five, and large beads ten. The color can have thematic significance, as seen in, such asA Little Light Snowfall, which features white beads representing snow.
Beads, which replace coins, serve as collectibles that guide players and rewardYoshi in hidden areas. They can also be found inbead jars. Most beads that appear without player interaction float, while those generated by interaction may float or drop to the ground. Like coins, beads that drop will disappear after a set time. Beads can be collected by entering hidden areas, hittingWinged Clouds, or pullingbows to reveal parts of the scenery. Transformations likeMega Yoshi andSky Pop Yoshi cause defeated enemies to drop beads. All bosses, exceptMega Baby Bowser, drop beads when damaged, andBurt the Bashful drops them upon vanishing. The level orBoss Challenge continues until all dropped beads have been collected or vanished. If Yoshi collects hearts while at maximum health, the excess hearts convert into beads.
Yoshi can collect beads by touching them, throwingyarn balls orPoochy Pups, spitting enemies or yarn balls, or usingwatermelon seeds. Poochy always collects beads, while Poochy Pups can do so when attacking.Mermaid Yoshi, Sky Pop Yoshi, andMole Yoshi can pull nearby items toward them. The player can use the "Pull items towards you with magnetic force!"Power Badge to enhance item collection for all Yoshi forms. Beads can also be collected withYoshi's tongue using the "Grab items with Yoshi's tongue!" Power Badge.
TheGoal Ring has several effects related to beads. Any space not occupied by a collectedSmiley Flower becomes a bead. When Yoshi passes through the Goal Ring while a white light is on a bead, Yoshi collects it, adding it to their counter after the victory dance. Enemies,Chomp Rocks, andarrow wheels on screen as Yoshi passes through also turn into beads, which are automatically collected. This applies to yarn balls orFluffin' Puffin chicks following Yoshi as they land. During the victory dance, including boss battles, beads may rise in the background and "explode" into fireworks patterns, all of which are considered collected.
When Yoshi collects beads, a counter in the top-left corner displays the total number of beads he has. This count is recorded in the save file. Collecting 100 beads does not reset the counter or grant extra lives, as lives are not part ofYoshi's Woolly World andPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, The counter maxes out at 999,999 beads; collecting more has no significant effect, and reaching this maximum does not unlock any content. Beads can be spent on Power Badges and one-time bonuses for individual levels.
Each level features twenty beads that includeStamp Patches, which are replaced byPencil Patches inPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World. While these beads have no distinguishing marks, those collected after completing a level will display a small icon during future playthroughs, similar to howRed Coins differ from regular coins in theYoshi franchise. Players can also identify these beads by buying the 'See Hidden Items!' Power Badge, which makes them glow.
InSponge Cave Spelunking, if YoshiGround Pounds the greenMushroom Platforms, ring formations of beads will drop down from the caps.
InPoochy & Yoshi's Woolly World, the player can collect beads in various ways, including thePoochy Dash mode, where Poochy is the main character. In this mode, beads are tracked by level as a scoring mechanic rather than currency, but all collected are added to the main game. Poochy can collect beads like Yoshi, but he can onlyjump, stomp, andslide, lacking Yoshi's other bead-collecting abilities. When Poochy bounces off walls or takes damage, he drops beads that quickly vanish. Since Poochy operates in an auto-runner format, he cannot stop or move backward, which prevents him from collecting some dropped beads. Additionally, running throughlava causes him to lose beads.
Some beads fall from the sky and land on the ground as Poochy moves through the course. Sometimes, if Poochy reaches certain spots or performs specific actions, fireworks-like patterns of beads appear as a reward. These beads are pulled into Poochy after they appear. After Poochy passes the goal, a bead will rise and "explode" into a firework of 50 beads for each of the three Poochy Pups he found in the level. These beads are also collected. Once these "fireworks" finish, the player receives a medal based on the number of beads they collected.
One of the missions for every course is to collect 1500 beads, which corresponds to a platinum medal, the highest achievement among the medals.Hotheaded Lava Fields has an additional mission to collect all the beads that fall from the sky. When playing Poochy Dash in Gold Rush mode, aGold Lakitu flies across the right side of the screen, continuously dropping yellow beads along the course's primary path. The bead count obtained in courses in Gold Rush is tracked separately from the bead counts of courses in normal play, and the former can only be seen while Gold Rush is toggled on in the Poochy Dash menu.
Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World also adds theYoshi Theater. After watching one of the videos, the player is asked a question about its events. If the player selects the correct answer, they receive 500 beads.
