ABattle Beetle[1] is anenemy inSuper Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. TheseJapanese rhinoceros beetles[2] (identified asAtlas beetles internationally)[1] walk forward until reaching a ledge, after which they fly straight up, then slowly hover down towardsMario. A Battle Beetle can be defeated from either beingstomped or from afireball. Battle Beetles appear in theLeaf Course of theTree Zone and theFlower Course of theMacro Zone. They look much likeHercules beetles, but are roughly Mario's size.

In Kodansha'sSuper Mario manga, a beetle caught by Mario during his childhood and raised as his pet grows into a giant Battle Beetle after Wario takes over Mario Land, but Wario's hypnosis does not affect it. During thefirst volume ofSuper Mario Land 2, the Battle Beetle helps Mario andPrincess Peach locate the first threeGolden Coins, traverse theTree Zone, and defeat thesewer rat and theWitch. While fighting the latter, the Battle Beetle breaks its horns and dies shortly after in Mario's arms. He reappears in thethird volume, revealing that it just went into hibernation and did not actually die, aiding Mario and friends during the final battle. It blows out the magical candles that caused Wario's minions to return from the dead, making them disappear.

A Battle Beetle also appears involume 7 ofSuper Mario-kun, where Mario gets robbed by it and, while engaging a battle with it, the Battle Beetle hits a branch from which aHeavy Zed falls, squashing and defeating it. Involume 9, another Battle Beetle appears as one of the many enemies affected by the chaos and is defeated byBunny Mario.
