to turn transparent, and you can go through bars.” - —Sign during "Luigi and the Haunted Mansion",Super Mario Galaxy
Certain missions inSuper Mario Galaxy andSuper Mario Galaxy 2 feature criss-crossingbars that form walls, blocking hallways entirely. These bars are penetrable only if the player character is in hisBoo form. Equivalent walls calledcrystal[1] appear in the firstSuper Mario Galaxy as well. They function the same way. They are similar to thewire nets inSuper Mario 64.
History[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, bars appear in theGhostly Galaxy, whereLuigi is being imprisoned during "Luigi and the Haunted Mansion." They are introduced alongsideBoo Mushrooms, which transformMario intoBoo Mario. Shaking
makes Boo Mario turn intangible for five seconds, enabling him to phase through the bars and ultimately reach Luigi. Bars are otherwise impenetrable to Mario or Luigi.
Luigi himself is behind bars. If Boo Mario phases through his holding cell to return outside, he loses the power-up.
During "Racing the Spooky Speedster," Boo Mario or Boo Luigi race theSpooky Speedster inBoo's Boneyard Galaxy. The entire raceway is on a 2D plane. The caverns are blocked by translucent, ghostly walls called crystal that function identically to bars.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
InSuper Mario Galaxy 2 and its Nintendo Switchport, bars appear only in the Howling Tower ofBoo Moon Galaxy, the only part of the game to include Boo Mushrooms. Bars behave as they did in the prior game. This area is accessible only during "Haunting the Howling Tower." The layout of the Howling Tower is comparable to that of Boo's Boneyard Galaxy.
