- —Banktoad,Super Mario Galaxy 2
Banktoad is a greenToad who is a member of theToad Brigade. He has a great love for Star Bits and can often be found in many different galaxies where he can usually be seen digging forcoins. Originally unnamed, Banktoad receives his title inSuper Mario Galaxy 2 for his duty of managingStar Bits in the original version of that game.
History[edit]
Super Mario series[edit]
Super Mario Galaxy[edit]
Banktoad first appears unnamed inSuper Mario Galaxy and itsNintendo Switchport, as the green Toad member of theToad Brigade. During the annualStar Festival,Bowser attacks theMushroom Kingdom and kidnapsPrincess Peach, inadvertently abductingLuigi and the Toad Brigade as well. Luckily, Mario comes across the Toad Brigade during the first mission in theHoneyhive Galaxy, after which they follow him back to theComet Observatory. Once there, they construct a small spaceship called theStarshroom with the help of some of theLumas onboard the Comet Observatory. After this, they use the spaceship to travel across the universe in order to help Mario or Luigi recover the lostPower Stars. The green Toad be found with the Toad Brigade in various galaxies throughout the game. He can usually be seen exploring the area, digging for coins with his pickaxe, or otherwise giving Mario helpful hints regarding his quest.
Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]
The green Toad brigade member returns inSuper Mario Galaxy 2, now named Banktoad. He first appears after the player collects sevenPower Stars, and can be used to storeStar Bits on a regular basis. He can hold up to 9999 Star Bits. This is one of the requirements in order to access thePrankster Comet inGrandmaster Galaxy. Banked Star Bits collect interest overtime and are available across multiple save files. Banktoad also gives the player extra Star Bits every time they complete a mission, corresponding with the ones digit of how many Star Bits they obtained in that mission. Depending on how many Star Bits Banktoad is holding, Banktoad's appearance will change accordingly:
- 0-999: Banktoad holds a white Star Bit with both his hands.
- 1000-1999: He wears glasses with his hands empty likeBlue Toad.
- 2000-3999: He begins carrying a round shield with the image of Princess Peach's emblem on the front and a spear nearly twice as tall as himself.
- 4000-5999: Banktoad slings a pickaxe over his left shoulder.
- 6000-7999: He puts on goggles and a snorkel that look identical to the onesMailtoad sometimes wears in water levels (especiallyPurple Coin missions).
- 8000-9999: Banktoad attaches the flashlight part of a miner's helmet to a strap he places around his head likeCaptain Toad.
In the game'sNintendo Switch port, Banktoad no longer stores the player's Star Bits. Instead, he simply informs the player aboutamiibo when spoken to. His appearance is no longer determined by the number of Star Bits held, and now changes each time the player speaks to him after scanning an amiibo. These follow a preset cycle matching the order seen in the original game and beginning with him holding a Star Bit.
Super Mario Odyssey[edit]
Banktoad appears again inSuper Mario Odyssey. He continues to wear the explorer's outfit he gained inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker, although he gains apith helmet to wear over his mushroom cap. He can first be found running theCrazy Cap location on theLost Kingdom'sRocky Mountain Summit, with fellow Toad Brigade membersYellow Toad andMailtoad acting as the store's clerks. OnceMario has cleared all story objectives inBowser's Kingdom, Banktoad will appear at the starting gate next to aWarp Pipe informing him of a shortcut to theInner Wall. He also appears on an expedition to theDark Side withtheotherToads after the objectiveArrival at Rabbit Ridge! is complete, where he is near thespark pylon leading toRabbit Ridge Tower and informs Mario that theBroodals may still be fought although thePower Moons atop the tower have already been collected.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]
Banktoad is a playable character inSuper Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. He can be played in theCaptain Toad's Adventures levels, but only as P3. He has the same appearance as inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker. InBowser's Fury, Banktoad is one of the four Toads who must be found to receive aCat Shine, and he is on a small island near Crisp Climb Castle.
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker[edit]
Banktoad also appears inCaptain Toad: Treasure Tracker. While he does not appear to play the role of a Banktoad in this game, he proves to be a hardworking Toad and is often seen investigating various maps in certain levels. He wears attire similar to Captain Toad with the uniform and backpack for collecting treasure.
Banktoad directly helps Captain Toad in certain situations in which he could follow behind the Captain alongside the other members of the Toad Brigade to help him reach difficult areas in order to find treasure and to snag the Power Star.
