Banana Peels (orbanana peels), also namedBananas, in theSuper Mario franchise are hazards, most notably in theMario Kart series, first appearing inSuper Mario Kart. Occasionally, they are shown attached to thebananas themselves before being used, but as an interactive object, they are always treated as distinct items from normal bananas. Unlike standard bananas, these are often depicted with eyes, even before being peeled.

Banana peels are used in "Die Jagd nach dem Nintendo 64: Krawall im All," whenMario andLuigi dropped some in front ofWario andBowser, who were competing to find aNintendo 64-like spaceship.

Mario Kart series[edit]

The Banana (also known as the Banana Peel^[1] orbanana skin^[2]) in theMario Kart series is one of the most common items, appearing in every installment. A Banana causes akart to spin out if the vehicle touches the slippery item, slowing them down. Bananas in theMario Kart series can either be placed behind a kart, or be thrown forward down the track. It can also be held behind the kart as a defensive countermeasure against homingRed Shells and, to a lesser extent,Green Shells. TheMario Kart series also has a type of item featuring three Bananas,Triple Bananas, and when used, they automatically attach themselves to the back of the kart. Like many other items in theSuper Mario franchise, the Banana has eyes and a mouth. A Banana is the emblem of theBanana Cup.

Super Mario Kart[edit]

Mario Kart 64[edit]

Bananas inMario Kart 64 appear as items, this time alongsideBanana Bunches, which grant five normal Bananas. In this game, if a Banana is hit while a racer is driving straight, they will skid for a while before spinning out. However, the Banana's effect can be nullified by braking at the right time. The game also introduces theFake Item Box, which acts similarly to Bananas, but it cannot be tossed forward and can float in midair. Here, the bananas are only obtainable in 1st place, while CPUs can obtain this item in any place.

Mario Kart: Super Circuit[edit]

Bananas inMario Kart: Super Circuit appear as items, only in the single variation, and like inMario Kart 64, their effect can be nullified by braking after hitting the Banana.

Mario Kart: Double Dash!![edit]

Bananas inMario Kart: Double Dash!! are usable items alongside theGiant Banana, a larger variant usable byDonkey Kong andDiddy Kong only, as well asPetey Piranha andKing Boo, since the they can use any special item.

Mario Kart DS[edit]

Bananas inMario Kart DS are usable items alongside Triple Bananas, which gives three Bananas at once.

Mario Kart Wii[edit]

Bananas inMario Kart Wii are among the usable items, and are obtainable in the top five positions; the best chance of getting this item is in 1st place, with a 37.5 percent (15 out of 40) chance of getting it in said position. Triple Bananas also return fromMario Kart DS.

Mario Kart 7[edit]

Mario Kart 8 /Mario Kart 8 Deluxe[edit]

Bananas inMario Kart 8 andits Nintendo Switch port have had further improvements so that spinning out from touching one is increased further. A single Banana appears on the adverts forBaNaNa Boy. Bananas inMario Kart 8 Deluxe can sometimes be the transformation of the ninjaShy Guy obstacles inNinja Hideaway.

Mario Kart Tour[edit]

Bananas inMario Kart Tour reappear with the Giant Banana, maintaining their general purpose throughout theMario Kart series. However, unlike in previous games, the Giant Banana is exclusive to Donkey Kong,Yellow Toad (Pit Crew),Morton, andMario (Sunshine). Diddy Kong andFunky Kong's new exclusive item, theBanana Barrels, shoot out Bananas in front of them for a certain amount of time. Triple Bananas also return as an exclusive item forDaisy (Swimwear),Dixie Kong,Donkey Kong Jr. (SNES), andWaluigi (Bus Driver).

The following gliders increase the chance of getting Bananas and points for hitting racers with one.

Donkey Kong 64[edit]

Banana peels inDonkey Kong 64 appear frombarrels duringLanky Kong's segment ofKing K. Rool battle. After revealing the banana peel, Lanky can play from aMusic Pad to trick K. Rool into slipping on the peel.^[3]

Luigi's Mansion series[edit]

Banana peels appear twice in theLuigi's Mansion series. InLuigi's Mansion, they are thrown on the floor byGarbage Can Ghosts.^[4]Luigi can slip on these peels,^[5] costing him 5 HP,^[6] or 10 HP inthe Hidden Mansion. There are also discarded banana peels in theDining Room. Banana Peels inLuigi's Mansion 3 can come out of trash bins, but slipping on one only costs 1HP.

Mario Party series[edit]

Banana peels recurr frequently in theMario Party series. InMario Party 4, the boardKoopa's Seaside Soiree has two Ukiki's Banana Peel Junctions. At those junctions,Ukiki throw down banana peels that cause players to leave the junction from a random one of the two exits. Characters wearing aBowser Suit ignore this mechanic and pick a direction, because "Bowser doesn't slip on banana peels".

Many minigames feature banana peels as obstacles, where tripping on one stuns the player.Mario Party 4 has the minigameTree Stomp.Mario Party 5 has the minigameMass A-peel^[7]Super Mario Party has the minigameTrip Navigator. In theMario Party: Star Rush minigameBowser's Shocking Slipup, bananas have this role, but instead of being on the field by default they appear as the bad roll from Item Boxes. They land away from the Item Box, and continue to stun players for touching them.

InSuper Mario Party Jamboree, Bananas appear as an item that can be used in the Bowser Kaboom Squad mode, where they can be placed on the ground. IfImpostor Bowser steps on one, he slips and becomes immobilized for a few seconds.

Bananas in theSuper Smash Bros. series can sometimes be amongst the food in theitem of the same name. Bananas inSuper Smash Bros. Melee subtract 5% damage, and Bananas inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate specifically appear in theTortimer Island stage, where they subtract 3% damage.

Banana Peels in theSuper Smash Bros. series appear as items inSuper Smash Bros. Brawl and subsequent installments, and when thrown, anyone who walks over the peel will trip over onto their back. It is also used in Diddy Kong'sdown special move. InSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate, an offensive item known as aBanana Gun that produces a Banana Peel after being used also appears.

Mario Power Tennis[edit]

Bananas inMario Power Tennis tend to appear in the Item Battle mode, where players can hit the balls throughItem Boxes, and are referred to as "Slippery Danger." The player has to hit the ball with the racquet in order to use the item. When used, the banana will be attached with the ball until it stays still on the ground in the case the ball bounces. Also, theGarbage Can Ghost in the Luigi's Mansion stage throws bananas that have the same function as the regular bananas as a stage gimmick.

Mario Strikers series[edit]

Bananas in theMario Strikers series are items coming in quantities of three or five. When dropped, a banana peel knocks over any player who runs into it. Some of the bananas can fall out of the field if used toward an edge of the playing field. A similar item is theGiant Banana.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story /Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

Bananas inMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and itsremake are used byCrawfuls in an attack where it throws a banana in front of it and slips towards the character currently being used, who must punch it away or hammer it respectively.

Mario Sports Mix[edit]

Banana Peels inMario Sports Mix are items that can stop opponents temporarily, but it can also either power up the ball or puck. When used as an item shot, the ball does a curved path and slips opponents on contact. Banana Peels inWestern Junction are thrown by Shy Guys in cars linked to a train, putting players at risk of slipping on them.

Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games[edit]

Banana peels appear inMario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games as obstacles on the Market Street Rink inSnow Day Street Hockey. They scatter over the rink temporarily upon hitting a banana seller's stand,^[8] and whoever slips on one becomes stunned temporarily.

Super Mario Run[edit]

InSuper Mario Run, Banana Statues aredecorations in Kingdom Builder mode. Initially available in aMario Kart 8 Deluxe event, it has since been made as a item from the Bonus Game in the Remix 10 mode. It has a number of differences from other statues, as it lacks a grey base, is a decoration rather than a building, and is the only 1★ item that is a statue. It is also the lowest ranked item available through an event.

WarioWare series[edit]

Banana peels appear in somemicrogames of theWarioWare series.

Some microgames use Banana Peels as they appear in theMario Kart series. The 1st level difficulty and 3rd level difficulty ofSuper Mario Kart inWarioWare Gold has Mario drive around Bananas onRainbow Road. The Level 2 version ofShadow Sports inWarioWare: Get It Together! sometimes has the character in the game kick a Banana Peel.

Mario Golf: Super Rush[edit]

Bananas inMario Golf: Super Rush appear as obstacles in theBattle Golf mode inside clear spheres, where if a character steps on one, they lose coins. There are also multiple bananas inside the spheres which surround the player with bananas.
