Bananas in theSuper Mario franchise are tropicalfruit with a variety of purposes. They areDonkey Kong's favorite food,[1] so a number of appearances of bananas are tied to that character orKongs in general.

History[edit]

Donkey Kong Jr.[edit]

A banana from Donkey Kong Jr.

Bananas do not appear inDonkey Kong Jr., although aBanana Bunch is among the fruit whichDonkey Kong Jr. can drop on enemies in thefirst stage.

Club Nintendo comics[edit]

Bananas in theClub Nintendo comic "Super Mario Klemp-Won-Do: Muskeln sind nicht alles!" are used by Mario to make his opponentBlanka slip and fall.

Bananas in "Donkey Kong in: Banana Day 24," being the Kongs' favorite food, are the main victuals when Donkey Kong and his friends travel to Outer Space in order to stop aliens from pullingEarth away from the sun. As it turns out, the culprits just erroneously took the planet for a hugecoconut, a fruit their species adores. Diddy suggests to give bananas to the extraterrestrials as a compensation to get Earth back. This plan works, and the aliens are enthusiastic about the bananas' taste.

Donkey Kong Country series andDonkey Kong Land series[edit]

A Banana from theDonkey Kong Country series

Bananas in theDonkey Kong Country series andDonkey Kong Land series are the main collectible items in the same manner asCoins in theSuper Mario series, since for every one hundred bananas collected, the player receives anextra life.[2] Banana Bunches in both series are worth ten regular bananas. Bananas are additionally a key item to the stories of some games in both series, as Donkey Kong has abanana hoard that antagonists steal or otherwise threaten.

InDonkey Kong Country, some of the bananas seen in levels are bananas from the stolen banana hoard dropped by theKremlings.[3][4] Bananas and Banana Bunches in this game commonly appear withinBonus Areas to the extent of having a type centered around them, "Collect the Bananas!". Donkey Kong can sometimes reveal a Banana Bunch by usingHand Slap in a specific location. Hoards of bananas in the boss arenas fill the background.

Bananas inDonkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest can additionally serve as visual aids. Bananas that point at a wall indicates that it can be broken, and this always leads into aBonus Area. One banana can also give away the location of either a hidden object (such as aBarrel Cannon or ahook), a hidden item (such as anExtra Life Balloon), or even aBonus Barrel. Bananas inDonkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest and its sequel,Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble!, are sometimes arranged in the shape of a controller button, indicating which button must be pressed during that moment; for example, inBobbing Barrel Brawl of the latter game, a group of bananas shaped as a "Y" tell the player to pressY Button forEllie to draw over aTNT Barrel stuck between two redBuzzes. In theGame Boy Advance port, the arrangement of these bananas were updated to match with the appropriate Game Boy Advance button.

Bananas are key items in the story ofDonkey Kong Country Returns, itsNintendo 3DS port, and itsNintendo Switch port. TheTiki Tak Tribe steals bananas from all across the island, including those of the banana hoard. Most of the game's bosses interact with bananas in their opening cutscenes, usually by eating some. This is what prompts Donkey Kong andDiddy Kong to attack. TheFactory's boss level,Feather Fiend, reveals that the Tiki Tak Tribe uses crushed bananas to create more tikis. The game's ending has the volcano onDonkey Kong Island erupt bananas all over the island. Several of them incidentally activate a statue revealing theGolden Temple.

As items, bananas inDonkey Kong Country Returns are very similar to their earlier appearances. Button prompts are moved to the new charactertutorial pig, so banana are not arranged in button indicative formations. Collecting all bananas, and sometimes aBanana Coin, in certain areas can make objects appear. Examples include a Red Balloon or aPuzzle Piece. In levels involvingRocket Barrels, the path of bananas that have this effect in a field of bananas that do not is usually indicated by the path consisting of banana bunches. There are now winged bananas that float around in certain areas (mostly Bonus Areas), which are worth five bananas. Normal bananas sometimes trail behind a winged banana. Enormous, floating bananas (amongst otherfruit) appear in the Golden Temple's level as platforms that swing back and forth. They have steep slopes for edges. Some of the bananas only swing forward, but they face the screen and loop between the background and foreground.

Bananas inDonkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze andits Nintendo Switch port, have another gameplay mechanic linked to them, where by collecting a hundred bananas, theKongs can perform aKong POW, aside from receiving an extra life. Regular bananas in the game also follow behindflying bananas, and collecting all of these bananas spawns another item, such as aBanana Coin or even aPuzzle Piece.

Diddy Kong Racing[edit]

Bananas inDiddy Kong Racing only (not theNintendo DS remake, which replaces them withcoins) are collectible items that influence a vehicle's top speed, but the player can have only up to ten at a time. Two bananas are dropped by the player if they hit an obstacle. Bananas inSmokey Castle are stored within four collectible treasure chests. The banana counter resets to zero at the beginning of each race.

Yoshi's Story[edit]

Bananas inYoshi's Story are theFavorite Fruit ofYellow Yoshis, excludingmelons, which are loved by all Yoshis. Bananas on theSuper Happy Tree are seen growing from the top.

Donkey Kong 64[edit]

Artwork of the Banana colours in Donkey Kong 64
The different colored Bananas fromDonkey Kong 64

Bananas inDonkey Kong 64 are collectible items appearing in one of five colors, each only collectible by a certain Kong: yellow for Donkey Kong, red forDiddy Kong, purple forTiny Kong, blue forLanky Kong, and green forChunky Kong. There are exactly 500 bananas (100 per color) in each of the game's seven levels, for a total of 3,500 bananas in the entire game. Bananas inTroff 'n' Scoff have more relevance to gameplay than in other areas, since the Kongs need to feed them toScoff, who grows larger from eating bananas until eventually becoming large enough to stomp his platform, allowingTroff to reach the key and unlock the boss door. Unlike theDonkey Kong Country trilogy, Banana Bunches are worth five bananas. ABanana Balloon is worth ten bananas, which the Kong can obtain by sniping their associated Banana Balloon.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Bananas in theSuper Smash Bros. series can sometimes be amongst the food in theitem of the same name. Bananas inSuper Smash Bros. Melee subtract 5% damage, and Bananas inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate specifically appear in theTortimer Island stage, where they subtract 3% damage.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also introduces an item known asBanana Gun, which is a banana held as a gun and can fire a single banana fruit as a projectile, with aBanana Peel all being left afterwards.

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario Sunshine[edit]

Banana
A banana as it appears inSuper Mario Sunshine

Bananas inSuper Mario Sunshine are among the different interactive fruit objects appearing throughoutIsle Delfino. Bananas fall faster and have more friction than other fruits, andYoshis that eat a Banana turn pink, allowing them to spitJuice of the same color. Bananas inDelfino Plaza are sold in the market sector by a street vendor, but Mario can take them for free. Bananas piqued the interest of a localPianta to the point where she asksMario to help gather three bunches for her and place them in abasket next to her. A supply of bananas and other fruit inRicco Harbor are stored in a gigantic tank used in theepisodeYoshi's Fruit Adventure. Bananas inSirena Beach are sold at the fruit bars inHotel Delfino, but Mario is free to use them.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

Mario Party series[edit]

Mass A-peel from Mario Party 5
Bananas inMass A-peel, a minigame fromMario Party 5.

Bananas in theMario Party series have appeared in variousminigames, such as inTree Stomp inMario Party 4, where golden bananas increase the speed of any player that collects them. Bananas are prominently featured inDonkey Kong minigames inMario Party 5,6, and7, where they are worth one, two, or threecoins depending on a random multiplier determined by whoever has landed on aDK Space before the minigame starts. In these games, there are also Banana Bunches, which are worth five bananas each and also mainly found in Donkey Kong minigames.

Outside of minigames, Bananas directly replaceMini Stars inDK's Jungle Ruins inMario Party 9, where the goal is to have the most bananas by the end.Z-Bananas similarly appear as a counterpart toMini Ztars.

Mario vs. Donkey Kong series[edit]

In theMario vs. Donkey Kong series, Bananas appear in the form ofBanana Bunches, which function in the same way asfruit fromDonkey Kong Jr.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat[edit]

"Beat" redirects here. For the Mega Man character and one ofMega Man's custom special moves inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS andSuper Smash Bros. for Wii U, seeMega Man § Rush Coil.

Bananas and Banana Bunches inDonkey Kong Jungle Beat are part of a scoring system calledbeats (orbanana points[5] in theNew Play Control! version). In this game, Donkey Kong's banana total acts as his overall health (in the New Play Control! version, they only act as his health for boss battles); losing all of his beats results in aGame Over. Normal bananas are worth one beat, and bunches are worth three, but stringing together multiple combos and clap grabbing multiple bananas increases the amount of beats they are worth. Lastly, there is a minigame after said levels involving Donkey Kong eating as many bananas as he can in the allotted period of time, to increase his beat total for that level.

WarioWare series[edit]

The microgame Donkey Kong Country from WarioWare Gold
Donkey Kong collecting bananas in theDonkey Kong Country microgame ofWarioWare Gold

Bananas appear in manymicrogames in theWarioWare series. The 2nd level difficulty ofEating Contest tasks the player with eating a banana. The 2nd level difficulty ofClose Call has a banana used as a tennis ball on a court and bounce away, with the player having to determine if the "ball" landed within or outside the court. The banana's long shape makes this task more difficult than the normal tennis ball. The 3rd level difficulty ofHand Me Down has the player use a banana as a baton, passing it to a gorilla to win a relay race. Certain levels ofNose Dive have Handroid V eat a banana as a power-up before a boss encounter. The 3rd level difficultyWheel of Whack tasks the player with hitting monkeys with a hammer, but the monkeys can use a banana as a shield and stun the hammer. InCode Dependency bananas may be one of the objects with bar codes the player has to scan. InWhat Goes In..., the food the player has to digest may be a banana. The 3rd level difficulty ofFruit Fans has the player pick out the bananas from birds and jaguars designed to greatly resemble bananas. The 2nd level difficulty ofInch, Worm! has the goal be to reach a banana.

Microgames based on games of theDonkey Kong Country series feature bananas as per their depiction in that series.WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase has the microgameDK Country, andWarioWare Gold has the microgameDonkey Kong Country. Bananas have to be collected to complete the microgames.

DK: King of Swing[edit]

Bananas inDK: King of Swing are items that can be collected in quantities up to 300, and are used for restoring health or even becoming temporarily invincible.

Mario Tennis Open[edit]

Bananas inMario Tennis Open can be seen on theDK Jungle court, in the emblem for theBanana Cup, on the trophy for the cup, and in tennis gear forMiis designed after Bananas.

Nintendo Land[edit]

Bananas inNintendo Land have to be collected in theDonkey Kong's Crash Course attraction while attempting to reachDonkey Kong andPauline.

Mario Golf: World Tour[edit]

Bananas inMario Golf: World Tour appear in food bowls on some tables of the Castle Club's Royal Room, inside of barrels, which are the tee markers of the DK Jungle course, and there is golf gear designed after the item that Miis can use. A banana is used in Diddy Kong's animation for getting a bogey, where he eats one while lying down and throws it on the ground, and from getting double bogey or worse, except when he tries to get up and walk, Diddy slips on the banana.

Mario Strikers series[edit]

DuringDiddy Kong's ground entrance, he pulls out a banana, and whacks it on his hand, which is used to say that he is going to crush his opponent.

Mario Sports Superstars[edit]

Bananas inMario Sports Superstars are part of Diddy's bogey and double bogey animations in Golf mode, both reused fromMario Golf: World Tour directly.

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle[edit]

Bananas inMario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle are the currency in the Donkey Kong Adventure mode, replacingcoins from the main game. Donkey Kong also uses banana-shaped boomerang weapons calledBwananarangs, with one of them, the Potassium Pulverizer, being directly based on a banana.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie[edit]

A bunch of Bananas can be seen besideCranky Kong's throne inThe Super Mario Bros. Movie, from which Cranky picks up a banana asMario is punched repeatedly byDonkey Kong in the stadium duel. Additionally, Bananas can be seen hanging on a fruit cart along withpineapples andwatermelons whileToad is escorting Mario through the Mushroom Kingdom. Similar toDiddy Kong Racing, Bananas are used to fuel thekarts of theJungle Kingdom.

Donkey Kong Bananza[edit]

Piles of bananas can be found onDK Island in theDK Island & Emerald Rush DLC fromDonkey Kong Bananza. Donkey Kong's health will heal if hepunches it. It is also revealed in this game that whileKing K. Rool also loves bananas, he specifically loves them when they are overripe and rotten.

In the main game,Cranky Kong mentions that abanana thief had stolen Donkey Kong's bananas while he was atIngot Isle.
