Autobombs are large, wheeled cannons which launch projectiles and can be ridden on. Its name is possibly a portmanteau of "automobile" and "bomb". It is a personal favorite ofShyguys.[1][2]

History[edit]

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic /Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Artwork of Autobomb with Shy Guy. The sprite scan shows them in an area they do not appear in the final game. Additionally, the "M" on it is smaller and red instead of white, which carried over to subsequent artwork.
OriginalYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic artwork and sprite

InYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic andSuper Mario Bros. 2, Autobombs are utilized by redShyguys as a means of transportation and offense. They pursue and shoot fiery projectiles at the player. It can travel down steps but not up. If the Shyguy is removed, the Autobomb stops shooting and travels in a straight line. The player can then ride it, but not control it or pick it up. In some levels, riding an Autobomb is mandatory in order to cross large,spike-filled gaps. The Autobomb itself can be destroyed with a thrown object. Autobombs were originally black, white and red, but were recolored to a shade of teal in theSuper Mario All-Stars version, and light gray inSuper Mario Advance.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show![edit]

Autobomb
An Autobomb inThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show!

InThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, Autobombs, never referred to by name, only made an appearance in the episode "Koopenstein". An Autobomb first appeared in the episode whenMario,Luigi andPrincess Toadstool are captured byMouser and a group of Shyguys. Later,Toad, when surrounded by Shyguys, manages to light the fuse of a nearby Autobomb using aPiranha Plant, causing it to blast the surrounding Shyguys, creating a distraction that allowed Toad to escape.

Notes[edit]

  • In the original instruction booklet, the "M" emblazoned on the side is red and a different shape on the sprite, whereas it is white in-game.[1][2] While the artwork is redrawn in later releases, it is still depicted as red instead of white. Said "M" may also stand for Mamu, the Japanese name ofWart, or Muu, the original name ofSubcon.
  • TheYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic instruction booklet states that the Autobomb shoots the shells of bad dreams, and that because of that, it is also known as a terrifying stroller.[2] This may be a remnant of earlier versions of the game where Autobombs shotBullet Bill–like rounds instead of fireballs, which can be seen in pre-release material.[16] TheSuper Mario Bros. 2 instruction booklet removes mention of projectiles and instead states that it is also known as a "bad dream machine."[2]
