AlphaDream Corporation, Ltd., orAlphaDream (formerly known asAlphaStar), was a Japanese video game development studio founded on January 12, 2000, as a second-party developer forNintendo. AlphaDream developed theMario & Luigi series, starting withMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga up untilMario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey. The company's staff included prominent developers fromSquare Co., such asChihiro Fujioka and Yoshihiko Maekawa, who worked as directors onSuper Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars.

AlphaDream's first game in theSuper Mario franchise,Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga, draws heavy inspiration from the company's prior gameTomato Adventure, which includes borrowing the art style, the strong resemblance of some characters (such asHermie III being based on theYadotsurī enemy), and similar sound effects. Some files fromTomato Adventure's soundtrack appear unused inMario & Luigi: Superstar Saga's files.

On October 1, 2019, the company ceased operations immediately after filing for bankruptcy, citing sluggish revenues and high development costs exceeding overall debt, which was approximately ¥465 million as of the end of March 2018.[3] The final game worked on by AlphaDream wasMario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, which was released a month after the company's bankruptcy, and the company ceased to exist on February 28, 2020. However, several developers from AlphaDream who were originally involved in previousMario & Luigi games, including both Chihiro Fujioka and Yoshihiko Maekawa, later returned for the development ofMario & Luigi: Brothership,[4] withAcquire serving as the game's main developer.
