Albatosses are birdenemies that appear inYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic and itsWestern counterpart,Super Mario Bros. 2. Some fly withBob-ombs in their talons and drop them when a player character is below, though others simply fly forwards and can be used as platforms.

Their means of attack is invocative ofbombers and their overall design is similar to largebirds of prey in the orderAccipitriformes, like eagles, hawks, and Old World vultures. Despite the lack of resemblance,Perfect Ban Mario Character Daijiten states that Albatosses arepterosaurs (「翼竜」,Yokuryū, lit. "wing dragon"), prehistoric flying reptiles that are unrelated to birds.[1]

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic /Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

InYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic andSuper Mario Bros. 2, Albatosses appear in four levels, where they fly horizontally across the screen. Unlike most other enemies, Albatosses cannot be picked up, but they can be defeated by throwing something at them or touching them whileinvincible. According the game's manual, they used to be normal residents ofSubcon untilWart took control.[2]

InWorld 3-3 andWorld 5-3, Abatosses carry Bob-ombs, which they drop when above the player character, and in the latter level, they spawn infinitely from either side of the screen. Many Albatosses also appear inWorld 6-2, where they must be ridden to cross the large pits that make up most of the level. Albatosses make their last appearance inWorld 7-1, where they drop Bob-ombs as soon as they appear on screen, and must again be ridden to progress.

InYume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic, Albatosses have two frames of animation, while inSuper Mario Bros. 2, they have seven frames; an eighth frame exists, showing the wings moving back upwards, but is unused due to aglitch.[3] TheSuper Mario All-Stars andSuper Mario Advance remakes restore the missing frame.

Super Mario All-Stars /Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3[edit]

An Alabatoss makes a cameo appearance in both theSuper Mario All-Stars andSuper Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 versions ofSuper Mario Bros. 3, where theking ofThe Sky is turned into an Albatoss; in the original version, he is turned into a regular bird.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show![edit]

Albatoss, "Jungle Fever"

Albatosses make a few appearances inThe Super Mario Bros. Super Show! They are usually used as bombers byKing Koopa, and they sometimes capture Mario and company in nets. Albatosses are also seen in the show's intro. In this show, they have a dark-brownish head, instead of matching their bodies' red color.

The only episode where an Albatoss has a speaking role is "Jungle Fever," where Mario and his friends ride one to get off the bridge King Koopa sliced, only for it to get aBirdo egg on its face.Koopa's rocket also slightly resembles the head of an Albatoss. Additionally, the characterHooded Robin somewhat resembles an Albatoss.

Albatosses are featured in the following episodes:

King Koopa's Kool Kartoons[edit]

InKing Koopa's Kool Kartoons, an Albatoss would deliver mail to King Koopa's character.[4] The Albatoss was a brown bird prop dangled with strings to simulate it flying.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

In a part ofSuper Mario-kun, an Albatoss carries Mario, Luigi, andYoshi, but then it hurls them into a wall.

An Albatoss, referred to asEvil Eagle appears inThe Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening as the boss ofEagle's Tower, and is fought on top of the tower itself. It is ridden by theGrim Creeper and attacks by flying from side to side, occasionally swooping down or flapping its wings to simultaneously blowLink away and shoot feathers at him. Although Evil Eagle's official artwork depicts it as red and its body is given a red color palette inThe Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, theNintendo Switch remake instead gives it a white body color.

Profiles[edit]

  • Super Mario Advance instruction booklet: "Albatosses were just average residents of Subspace until Wart ordered them to carry Bob-ombs about."[5]:12

A reliable pterosaur

Several pterodactyls fly in formation. You cannot lift them, but you can ride on their backs. There are stages where you have to ride on the back of a pterosaur in order to advance. It is a reliable transport. Its American name is Albatoss.
