Uttar Pradesh is not only a big state in terms of its size and population but also home to a large number of universities. There are also many research and academic institutes in the state that are run by the state government, the central government or private owners. The state is home to many renowned institutions of the country like the Indian Institutes of Technology in Kanpur, Varanasi and Allahabad and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) inLucknow. The state has a good number of universities that provide higher education in several course works.

There are four central universities in the state. Each of them is quite popular in the entire nation and attracts students from all over the country.

Aligarh Muslim University: Established in 1875 as a college, the university is one of the high ranked universities in India. More than 300 courses are offered by AMU in both traditional and modern branches of education.

Allahabad University: The fourth oldest university of the country, the university was known as the "Oxford of the East" at one point of time.

Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University: The chief objectives of the university are to cater to and promote the educational needs of the marginalized people, particularly the SC/ST communities and women.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU): It is one of the largest residential universities in Asia with about 20,000 students enrolled in it. Two of its objectives are to promote the study of the Hindu Shastras and Sanskrit literature and building up of character in youth by religion and ethics as an integral part of education.

Courses Offered

Several courses are offered by the universities in Uttar Pradesh. There are different colleges affiliated to several universities that offer various academic courses. Some of the main disciplines are as follows:

Admission Procedure

There is no common standard process that is followed for admissions into these universities. Every university has its own procedures to fulfill the admission criteria. Generally, the universities either conduct an entrance examination or issue a merit list to enroll students in different courses. In some courses, they may accept the scores of competitive examinations like CAT, MAT or GMAT for giving admissions.

Fees and Other Benefits

The fee structures of the courses offered in the universities vary from university to university. Library, sports facilities, theatres and hostels are some of the benefits given at some colleges affiliated to these universities. There are some colleges, especially private colleges that also provide placement services to the students. There are placement cells established in the campuses of the colleges or the universities where students can enroll and participate in the interview processes.
