[Insider] Maxis Femtocell coming soon

Maxis is expected to launch Femtocell very soon. It has partnered with Alcatel-Lucent(ALU) for that.

[The Maxis Alcatel-Lucent 9361 Home Cell V2]

What is a Femtocell? It is a small base station(like a WiFi router) that extend a network to enhance coverage in areas where it can be traditionally poor, such as buildings which can interfere with the quality of a mobile signal. They can also be applied in rural or remote areas far from a cellular network base station, as well as busy public areas such as shopping malls and airports, where crowds of people and their mobile devices can also impede mobile coverage and capacity. Femtocell requires a stable fixed broadband service to work.

The Alcatel-Lucent 9360 Small Cell solution will not only allow increased coverage and higher quality calls, new femtocell services are being made available using the information stored in the cell itself. In the home, this could involve setting up a text message to be sent to a working parent to say their child has arrived home from school; in a work environment, the Enterprise cell can recognize employees’ mobile devices as they arrive for work and send out mass text announcements with practical information.

Maxis plans to make available the Femtocell service to the business(SME) market first before moving on to the consumer market. Based on our source, the Femto unit such as the 9361 Home Cell could cost as low as RM600-RM700 per unit. We were told that voice quality was good even with a 384kbps Internet connection. Maxis seems to be impressed with ALU’s self-organizing network (SON) that allows the Femto unit to auto-configure without any further intervention from the user.

More updates soon.
