What problem LF had that the partner solves

    • The Linux Foundation has a very small IT team responsible for all domain management — including registration, renewal, DNS, and some basic services, like email forwarding and http(s) redirects. Most people responsible for requesting changes to these services were not on the IT team. They would submit change-request tickets, some of which were urgent. A lot of The Linux Foundation’s challenges revolved around these support tickets and how to alleviate pressure from the IT staff.
    • They needed a domain registrar with a robust API that supported numerous TLDs, email forwards, and HTTP(S) redirects. DNSimple checked [all the boxes](https://dnsimple.com/dns-hosting).

    How partner solution implemented

    • With over 1500 domains to manage, the Linux Foundation needed a registrar with a robust API. They wanted to be able to automate registration and management of their domains. After looking at a number of other registrars, they found none of them fulfilled all their requirements. Some had APIs that were missing functionality. Others didn’t support specific TLDs.
    • The implementation process was very smooth, thanks to DNSimple responsive support and [comprehensive documentation](https://developer.dnsimple.com).
    • Up to date, clear and accurate DNSimple’s API documentation and their excellent support helped to implement the solution they needed.

What problem LF had that the partner solves

The Linux Foundation (LF), arenowned hub for open-source innovation, faced a significant communication challenge when working with itscustomers. Around 40 IT professionals provide an extensive catalog of services to companies with open-source initiatives, focusing mainly on Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD).

As an open source project, LF could use Slack internally for free but that arrangement didn’t cover its customers’ usage of Slack. It meant that LF was unable to benefit from real time communication with itscustomers.

Seeking an open source based alternative, and ideally one that would protect all parties data sovereignty, LF embarked on a Proof of Concept (POC) using Matrix, which showed promise. However, they faced challenges scaling it beyond the initial three groups involved in the POC. LF lacked the resources and service model to support widespread adoption. Mike Dolan, Senior VP, was a key advocate for this transition. The open-source projects LF served ranged from just three users to massive communities with up to 30,000 members, often under long-term contracts. Projects continuously onboarded new members each month, making scalability essential. Additionally, LF required Single Sign-On (Auth0) integration and an Admin console. Element proposed a model where LF would purchase Element licenses, and LF would bill their clients based on the services selected from their catalog, included in project contracts.

    Element's Solution

Element is a secure communication and collaboration platform that ensures trust by putting its users in complete control. It combines the best parts of email, collaboration and messaging with the open Matrix protocol to deliver secure real time communication.

Being decentralized, Element gives people and organizations complete ownership and control of their data. It also ensures network resilience, which is ideal for mission-critical environments.

Element is led by the same team that created the Matrix open standard, and is equally committed to open source. Element is used by loads of open source communities including several Linux distributions and desktop environments (Fedora, Debian, Archlinux, GNOME and KDE), the Ansible community, the W3C, or The Document Foundation (LibreOffice).

Leveraging the open-source Matrix protocol, Element enabled LF to create a secure, customizable, and scalable communication ecosystem.

    Fossa

What problem LF had that the partner solves

FOSSA is helping more than 100 Linux Foundation projects manage their open source risk and protect their code against license violations, vulnerabilities, and supply chain threats. We’re proud to be used with some of LF’s largest projects, including Kubernetes and Prometheus.

    How partner solution implemented

Projects embed the FOSSA CLI in their CI pipeline, giving every CI build hardened, enterprise-grade protection and audit-grade dependency reporting with a single command. Projects choose FOSSA because it is built for developers, with a powerful CLI, and has been a consistent supporter and adopter of standards, like SPDX for SBOMs.

    Gitpod

What problem LF had that the partner solves

Moving to the cloud has made centralized and automated continuous integration (CI) and deployment (CD) standard in software development. However, many developers still use inconsistent, static development environments, wasting daily hours on inefficient tools that limit creativity, collaboration, and flow. Cloud development environments (CDEs) are on-demand development environments, pre-configured with all tools, libraries, and dependencies needed to build and deploy modern applications. They'll help you spend less time reviewing pull-requests or onboarding contributors and more time building great things.

    How partner solution implemented

Gitpod Cloud is a cloud development environment hosted and managed by Gitpod. It is now available to Linux Foundation project maintainers with credits of 2,500 per maintainer, per month.

    Partner name

    Honeycomb

What problem LF had that the partner solves

Many projects that the Linux Foundation supports require a deep understanding of their performance. Insights are required at every step of the software development lifecycle: development, testing, deployment, and post-deploy. Honeycomb, an observability platform built for OpenTelemetry, provides LF projects with complimentary accounts to allow for lightning-fast debugging and deep insights on performance.

    How partner solution implemented

Linux Foundation and Cloud Native Computing Foundation projects are able to useOpenTelemetry to send telemetry (traces, metrics, and logs) for analysis, alerting, and SLOs. Please refer to ourdocumentation for configuration information, or refer to ourintegrations directory to connect Kubernetes, GitHub, and other platforms to Honeycomb.

Scarf provides privacy conscious software usage analytics for commercial and free open source projects.
    Learn More

    Partner name

    Scarf

What problem LF had that the partner solves

Scarf helps LF and its projects understand their software is used and adopted. LF projects can run more effectively if they can operate in a data-driven manner. Historically, LF and its projects for the most part haven’t had real usage analytics and don’t know who their users are. Getting that information in a way that respects end-user privacy & security is a significant undertaking, Scarf makes this simple, out of the box.

    How partner solution implemented

Projects can instrument their artifact downloads, code, web properties, documentation and other content,  with Scarf. A common use case is distributing your project’s containers through Scarf, and embedding Scarf on project documentation, for a comprehensive analytics for of onboarding and usage.
