Dolphin expert Stephanie King, Professor of Animal Behaviour at the University of Bristol, is a special guest on the latest episode of Peabody Award-winning documentary podcast Threshold 🎙️We need more than AI to really understand what dolphins are saying, says Dr King, co-director of Shark Bay Dolphin Research in Australia. After decades of studying dolphins, there’s so much we still don’t know, and she says that there’s still no substitute for quietly watching—and listening 🐬🌏 Hear more from Stephanie and the Shark Bay dolphins in “Country is Speaking” here:https://lnkd.in/e8A9KRNpThreshold

New research from Bristol Medical School reveals how climate change is driving up heat-related deaths. 🌍🔥During the 2021 heatwave in British Columbia, temperatures hit 49.6°C, our researchers created a model to predict how a similar event could impact human health. Their findings showed that 31% more deaths could occur in future summers due to climate change without mitigation.🌡️ Dr Chin Yang Shapland, who led the study, emphasises the urgent need to close data gaps and prepare vulnerable populations. COP30 may not have achieved everything that ambitious parties and observers set out to achieve, however climate progress was made across key areas, including: ✔️ A new regular loss & damage report providing a progress check on policy, financial and technical work, showcasing national & community-level experience & best practice, taking into consideration human rights, and informed by the best available science and Indigenous Peoples' knowledge. ✔️ A new just transition mechanism to enhance cooperation, technical assistance, capacity-building and knowledge-sharing to achieve equitable and inclusive just transitions. This can help to lay crucial foundations to strengthen the institutional arrangements and begin meaningfully implementing the just transition agenda. 🌡️ Commitment of the Presidency to continue building global momentum for the roadmaps on halting and reversing deforestation, and on the phase out of fossil fuels outside of the COP process, with a dialogue announced on this in Colombia next year. On a personal note, it was such a joy attending COP in person for the first time, and a privilege contributing to the impactful work thatLegal Response International do to ensure that underrepresented developing country delegations have access to the legal advice that can help to strengthen their strategic priorities and give those most severely impacted by climate change a stronger voice in the process.University of Bristol Law School,Cabot Institute for the Environment
