This was a unique opportunity to assist those who have dedicated their lives to protecting and serving our country, only to find themselves grappling with the often-daunting task of reintegrating into civilian life.

My role was in helping these veterans write their resumes and find jobs. Given my background in the U.S. Army and subsequent experience in human resources, this opportunity felt tailor-made, allowing me to use my professional skills to give back in a meaningful way.

One of the first things I realized was that many of these veterans possessed an incredible wealth of skills and experiences, but they often struggled to translate these into a language understood by civilian employers. They had led teams, managed resources, solved complex problems, and often under the most stressful circumstances imaginable, but weren’t sure how to articulate these achievements on a resume or during an interview.

So, my work focused on helping them identify these transferable skills, teaching them how to articulate these in a way that resonates with potential employers, and assisting them in building compelling resumes. We worked together on everything from writing compelling job descriptions to refining their career objectives and identifying their key skills and qualifications.

Additionally, I provided one-on-one coaching on job search strategies, interview techniques, and networking. Seeing the transformation in their confidence levels as they gained the tools to communicate their worth and secure employment was truly rewarding.

Beyond the practical assistance, one of the most impactful aspects of my role was simply offering a listening ear and a source of encouragement. Many of the veterans I worked with were dealing with significant challenges beyond their job search, including housing instability, health issues, and the emotional toll of adjusting to civilian life. Being able to provide a supportive presence during this challenging time was deeply meaningful..

Military Transition Advice from a Senior Mentor of Service Members who happened to have his life crushed when he tried to become a “Civilian”. The Military will show you a thousand successful ways to stay in but little to none on how to transition out successfully. Don’t rely on your military leadership chain to show you how to transition out, they’ve usually never done that before. Military Transition is not easy for the transitioning Service Member, their families, or the potential employer. My LinkedIn inbox is flooded daily with my fellow Warriors and their family members asking for transition advice. Some of them are within 30-90 days of their “out” date and are really stressed about how they are going to make it on the “outside”. As a former leader of many Soldiers, my heart goes out to them because I know what is about to happen to their lives. Some of them didn’t even know they were leaving the military in 60 days. In writing this advice, it is not to represent my current employer or former employers, does not support or endorse any institution or accreditation. It is simply a collection of the thoughts and ideas I have shared with countless transitioning US Military Service Members and their family members over the last few years as they have come to me for advice and assistance.

Hall and Kinsey spoke of the difficulties in keeping recruitment numbers up and what it takes to join the volunteer army in effect since the end of the draft. The rise in attention deficit disorder diagnosis has itself become a recruitment problem.
Despite those difficulties, Hall and Kinsey have been able to maintain recruitment numbers. Storm praised the quality of today’s recruits calling them smart. Kinsey noted that part of the recruitment process involves vocational testing to make sure a recruit is entered into a unit that captures his or her interest and where his or her talents are best utilized.

March 10, 2008 - Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Benny Kinsey is a strong believer of continuing education -- he earned his General Education Diploma (GED), Bachelor's degree and Master in Business Administration (MBA) while serving in the Army. While attending the Sergeants Major Academy (USASMA), CSM Kinsey completed a Master of Business Administration from Grantham University, an online university specializing in educating working adults.

"Continuing education is the most important standard a parent or leader can set for their children or subordinate," said CSM Kinsey. "The results of continuing education go far beyond the classroom. The ability to bring new ideas, thoughts and insight to age-old leadership situations can truly create a better experience for both the superior and the subordinate." CSM Kinsey believes obtaining an MBA has helped him become a better leader in several areas. The Army Recruiting Command relies on numbers, trends and seasons of a given market. "The educational experience was demanding and competitive," said CSM Kinsey. "My instructors worked with me through e-mail and phone calls late at night and really pushed me to complete my classes. I really enjoyed the time I spent with Grantham. I was able to take my classes whenever I had the time to log on. Most of the time it was either late at night or early in the morning before work. The Army Recruiting Command demands a lot of hours during the day and on weekends, so getting to my classes when I could was a huge benefit to me." CSM Kinsey pursued his graduate degree because he felt it would help him to be placed in positions of leadership after leaving the military. When he saw what the classes were doing for his current position in the Army, it only made his commitment to finishing the degree even stronger.

"I'm truly excited about all the opportunities with the Army and the Army Recruiting Command," said CSM Kinsey.

Taking on the responsibility to establish a new 200-employee contract in Afghanistan was an immense challenge, particularly given the 60-day timeframe. The project required intense focus and adept multitasking, as it was completed while managing my regular daily tasks. However, the experience, while demanding, was instrumental in honing my leadership, project management, and organizational skills.

My role within the 11-member team involved many facets. The process began with initial candidate screening and interviews, an intensive process that required a keen understanding of the specialized skills required for Department of Defense security contracts in a demanding environment like Afghanistan.

Following the initial selection, the focus shifted to the processing and final training stages. It was essential that the selected candidates not only met the qualifications on paper but were also fully prepared for the challenges of working in Afghanistan. This phase required keen attention to detail and a comprehensive understanding of the rigorous demands of the work environment, ensuring that all individuals were physically, mentally, and emotionally ready.

Multiple trips were made to Camp Lejeune, NC during this period. Beyond logistical preparations, I also coordinated events and transportation, ensuring a seamless transition from training to deployment.

The three-month project was an intensive full lifecycle event, demanding a high degree of involvement at every stage, from the initial contact to the ongoing relationship maintenance. The successful completion of this project was a testament to my ability to efficiently manage multiple tasks, work within tight deadlines, and build effective teams ready to take on challenging assignments. The experience further reinforced my skills and ability to effectively operate in complex, high-pressure environments.

Collaborating with Ken Sullivan, we orchestrated a truly unique event: the first US-based competition for a foreign military award. This undertaking required extensive coordination with various community and government organizations, as well as innovative budgeting strategies. Ken and I worked diligently to gather donations to offset the cost of the event, an initiative that not only met our goal but also provided an opportunity to engage our local community.

The competition spanned an entire week and involved the participation of over 120 service members from different locations. We managed logistical challenges involving multiple locations, ensuring that all sites were adequately equipped with water, food, and necessary supplies. Despite the complexity of the event, our meticulous planning and execution led to an impressive result: 39 service members were awarded the coveted German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency.

The testing was administered by Stabsfeldwebel Karl-Heinz Grenzebach, a German liaison to Fort Knox, KY. According to him, this was the first instance of a recruiting battalion being tested for the badge. The achievement served as a testament to the power of creative thinking and effective collaboration.

Throughout the process, the efforts of Ken Sullivan were instrumental. The event involved over 200 individuals, each playing a crucial role in bringing this vision to life. Impressively, the event saw zero recordable safety incidents and managed to stay within our annual budget.

The success of this initiative was not just measured in the number of badges awarded or budget conserved. It brought our team together, forged stronger bonds within the battalion, and demonstrated what could be achieved with determination and innovative thinking. “They said it couldn’t be done,” I remember saying. “But we did it.” This sentiment not only encapsulates the accomplishment but also signifies our collective spirit of resilience and perseverance.

As the Chair of the committee tasked with revising the US Army's Non-Commissioned Officer's Guide, I had the unique responsibility and honor of steering our team towards our collective goals and objectives. The Non-Commissioned Officer's Guide is an essential leadership reference for both junior and senior supervisors in the Army. Thus, the task at hand was not just a project; it was a chance to influence the growth and development of leadership across the entire US Army.

Our committee was composed of six highly dedicated individuals. Together, we updated and produced the new guide, meeting once per week for 45 weeks. Despite the considerable time commitment and meticulous attention to detail required, we met all our target deadlines ahead of schedule, demonstrating our team's determination, skill, and cohesion.

Our work was not done in isolation. We consulted extensively with our class at the US Army Sergeants Major Academy, benefiting from a broad range of perspectives and experiences. This collaborative approach ensured that the updated guide was not only comprehensive and accurate but also reflective of the evolving needs and realities of the Army's non-commissioned officers.

Ultimately, our efforts culminated in the official publication of the updated Non-Commissioned Officer's Guide in 2009. Seeing our work come to fruition was immensely rewarding, knowing that it would serve as a valuable tool for countless leaders in the US Army. This experience further reinforced my belief in the power of teamwork, meticulous planning, and a shared vision for achieving ambitious goals.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, one of the deadliest and most devastating hurricanes in the history of the United States, many survivors were left with little more than the clothes on their backs. Witnessing the mass displacement of people from Louisiana to Houston, TX, my colleague Ray Snyder and I felt compelled to assist in any way we could. We harnessed our collective initiative, creativity, and leadership to coordinate the efforts of a 40-person team dedicated to providing clothing and hygiene products to the refugees of this catastrophic event.

Our plan was simple yet effective: approach local dry cleaners to donate clothing items unclaimed by their owners. Over a period of 30 days, we worked tirelessly to secure these donations, sort through the items, and distribute them to the displaced families housed in churches, homeless centers, and high school gyms. Clean, well-pressed clothing might seem a small thing to some, but to those who had lost everything, it was a powerful symbol of hope, dignity, and the care of their fellow citizens. It was an opportunity for them to present themselves with confidence as they searched for permanent housing and employment opportunities.

However, this endeavor would not have been successful without the hard work and dedication of our 40-person volunteer team. They rose to the challenge with exemplary commitment and empathy, demonstrating the power of collective action in times of crisis. To honor their invaluable contribution, we ensured that all members of our team were recognized and awarded the US Government Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal. This recognition served not only as a token of gratitude but also as a testament to their altruism and dedication to serving others.

While the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina was overwhelming, it also highlighted the strength, resilience, and generosity of the human spirit.

Upon taking on the role of directing the Eagle Leadership Academy, I quickly identified the potential of station commanders, but also noted areas where proficiency and uniformity were lacking. Collaborating with Ken Sullivan, we envisioned and implemented an innovative approach to integrate new station commanders and reinforce the training of those already on duty.

Our method was centered on a three-day intensive program, with the curriculum tailored to address identified shortfalls. Leveraging my experience from a year of travel across the battalion's seven companies, and working closely with the battalion staff, we shaped the training content and objectives, ensuring they met the diverse needs of our station commanders. The sessions were designed to be intensive yet interactive, with quizzes and a final exam to assess knowledge acquisition.

The program kicked off with a diagnostic Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), an essential measure of physical aptitude and readiness. Following the APFT, the classes covered a diverse range of topics.

Recognizing the importance of networking in the recruitment process, we incorporated a session on recruiter centric networking, offering practical techniques for building relationships and effectively communicating the opportunities offered by the Army. The first day concluded with a session on contract placement, a fundamental area where precision, compliance, and tact are required.

The course content was delivered by nine instructors who are subject matter experts from the staff and the companies. This approach not only ensured that the best possible information and knowledge were passed on, but also fostered a deeper connection between the trainers and trainees.

The inaugural class, comprising 14 station commanders, graduated in early June. The success of this program reaffirmed our belief in continuous learning, empowerment, and the power of leadership.
