DIRECTV’s decision to abandon its acquisition of DISH Network due to bondholder opposition underscores a critical point: the pay-TV landscape is continuing to fragment as streaming takes center stage. The proposed merger, which would have created the largest U.S. pay-TV provider with 19 million subscribers, was seen as a way to consolidate a shrinking industry plagued by cord-cutting. But even $1 billion in potential cost synergies couldn’t overcome financial roadblocks.In a world dominated by Streaming TV, the failure of this deal reflects the increasing difficulty for legacy TV providers to adapt. Consumers demand flexibility, choice, and personalization—values that streaming platforms deliver natively. As cord-cutting accelerates, the focus shifts to innovation, aggregation, and delivering content where audiences are—streaming, not satellites.The implications are clear: the winners in this shifting landscape will be those who understand streaming is no longer a side business, but THE business.

Comcast launching Universal Ads, a platform for SMBs to buy streaming inventory, points to two different paths for CTV’s evolution. One path is about making streaming available to reach and frequency buyers, including SMBs. The other is about making CTV a performance channel that can truly compete with search and social (which is why SMBs gravitate to Google and Meta). These two paths require completely different technologies, language, skill sets, sales approaches, optimization algorithms, reporting, media spend controls, data transparency and control, attribution analytics, etc. In other words, it’s great to put a lot of streaming inventory in one place and make it more accessible. But the bigger opportunity is making CTV capable of the very thing that has made search and social a $500 billion combined opportunity: unleashing fully measurable performance that advertisers trust. We are huge fans of democratizing TV advertising and applaud any effort to engage more advertisers in CTV. But to reach its full potential, CTV must deliver the same results for performance advertisers, including SMBs, that search and social do.#PerformanceTV#CTV

Yes, it's one analyst firm's estimate based on imperfect data.Yes, it's frustrating that the big tech/media companies, Google in particular, do not break out stats for any of their streaming services. Or do so randomly.But assuming there is validity to the stat, we seem to be reaching that point where the vMVPDs have grown as much as they're going to grow and the overall number of people paying for a full cable bundle--traditional or virtual-- will continue to shrink. Slowly shrink. Because despite the most fervent wishes of the tech press, TV changes ever so slowly. But this may be the point where things really start to go south and soon enough media companies will need to make the call as to whether it's worth it to keep the lights on at their linear networks.And by "soon enough" I mean two to three years. And yes, it of course supports #SRT.For those of you who may not know, #ISR (Intelligense Surveillance Reconnaissance) is a term used in #Defense and #PublicSafety related to capturing, distributing, viewing, and analyzing real-time video that depends entirely on the associated metadata for #SituationalAwareness and #DecisionMaking. In the MSG Networks blackout dispute with Altice, the parent company of Optimum TV, some Wall Street estimates suggest that Altice "accounts for about 33% of MSG Networks’ distribution revenue and failure to renew Altice would wipe out all MSGN’s AOI for FY25 and mean bankruptcy for the RSN business." Optimum is pushing consumers to MSG's new Gotham Sports app, but this is a bad approach. Why should consumers pay extra for content they were already getting as Optimum cable TV customers? Also, the Gotham Sports app is horrible. I sometimes see latency of up to 3 minutes, frozen video, and black screens. Users are reporting a host of app and service problems on Twitter. Fubo will now be able to provide even more sports, including ESPN+, through amended distribution agreements with Disney as well as FOX.
