Several weeks ago, Graduate Music Fellow Daniel Jackson tuned intoWRTI, a Foundation grantee: "I tuned into WRTI’s Saturday Morning Classical program, which provided a beautiful backdrop for my morning studies and sparked engaging conversations with my daughter. "Hosted by Mike Bolton, the show airs from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring intriguing insights to engage listeners. Highlights included Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 30 in C Major by the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra. My 11-year-old, a novice band student and dancer, was captivated by our discussion on classical form and melodic motive as demonstrated in Haydn’s work. A profound discussion arose when we heard Brahms' Alto Rhapsody performed byThe Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts andChoral Arts Philadelphia, with famed soprano Jessye Norman, providing an opportunity to explore Norman's impact and that of Black American musicians in classical music. "In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many music radio broadcasts focused on music appreciation aired on national affiliates, with some offering advanced playlists, instructor manuals, and student notebooks. Today, the collaboration between radio stations, music education, and professional music organizations appears less significant. However, stations like WRTI provide excellent opportunities for deeper music appreciation and education, sparking imagination and engaging listeners in meaningful exploration of the musical arts."#music#wrti#radio#classical#conversation#grantee#philadelphia#thepresserfoundation

NABJ Philly offers its condolences to the family of radio personality and legend Bob Perkins, the jazz man who used his voice and intellect as his horn. We salute you on keeping our jazz history alive.NABJ Philly member Bobbi Booker offers these reflections on her friend and teacher:I had the distinct honor of producing Bob Perkins' final years on air at WRTI as he recovered from his 2019 stroke. I grew up listening to him during his time as news director at WDAS AM/FM, admired his seamless transition to jazz host at WHYY, and respected his work as editorial director for The Philadelphia Tribune, where he also submitted editorial commentary to numerous regional outlets. For years, listeners only recognized me as the host who preceded BP, a testament to the immense respect and following he commanded.During breaks between songs, we often shared stories about the media world and the people we both knew. More importantly, BP would open up about the moments that shaped his remarkable 57-year radio career. He was not just a fascinating storyteller, he was a consummate professional. Fans across the country sent him news clippings, which he graciously shared with me, always maintaining his sharp focus on news and his craft.I was constantly amazed by his ability to program and back-time his show flawlessly to hit the top of the hour, even while working with actual records that might skip. He came prepared with meticulous notes and a backup plan for every scenario. Producing his show was more than maintaining consistency - it was an opportunity to sit at the knee of a master and learn.BP's professional standards, storytelling gifts and profound dedication to radio continue to influence me. He was a legend in every sense of the word.I'll forever miss my colleague and friend, who truly embodied his moniker: BP with the GM – Bob Perkins with the Good Music for your finely tuned ears.

Heartbreaking Philly news: Bob Perkins, the legendary broadcaster — and for 25 years, our beloved host of Evening Jazz — died early Sunday morning, at 91. For Bob Perkins, making music was making magic. “That’s what a musician does, to me. When he or she stands up and takes a solo,” he said in 2020. “And it’s all coming out and improvised from the mind to the hand.”There’s another kind of magic too — the kind woven by a warm voice, a lifetime’s worth of knowledge, and an irresistible passion for jazz. That was BP with the GM.Read our obituary atwrti.org to share your BP memories in the comments, and learn more about "BP with the GM," who inspired so many in Philadelphia and beyond.#Jazz#PublicRadio#Philly#Philadelphia
