📣 PSA TO ALL LONDON FOLKS 📣 We're joining so many exciting communities around the world and participating inOpen Knowledge Foundation's celebration of#OpenDataDay.Join us on the 4th of March in Shoreditch (unfortunately a graffiti tour is not included) to talk about all things open data. We're hoping to start an exciting discussion on how companies can really use open data to help solve some of the biggest problems in the world. If there's one thing we've learned, it's to never underestimate the power of the corporate world to shape our future - from the environment, all the way to politics.🪴 How can people leaders leverage open data to tackle the lack of diversity and create an inclusive working environment?🏢 How can office managers and procurement teams help mitigate the environmental crisis?🤖 How can dev teams utilise open source to make the tech ecosystem more accessible and fair?💰 How can finance and operations pros have better access to real-time news from the industry and financial data to make high-impact decisions more quickly? Well... We'll find out!A perfect after-work activity if we can say so ourselves...Let us know you're coming here:https://lnkd.in/e_FWn_g8 (or dropAnia a message).(and yes, the poster took us 5 minutes to make. We've had too many data tasks today... 🙈)
2025… another year of open data?We were planning to make new predictions for what’s in store for the open data community in 2025, but if we’re being honest, most of what we thought would happen in 2024 did indeed happen, and we’re pretty sure the trends will continue.1️⃣ Transparency and ethics will continue becoming a benchmark for buying anything data-related.2️⃣ Open datasets will continue winning over privacy-conscious businesses (so most of them).3️⃣ AI will continue filling in the gaps and making open data more robust, complete, and reliable.4️⃣ Even more tech giants will allow access to their data, further enriching the open data ecosystem.5️⃣ The not quite yet loosened budgets will continue leading businesses towards all-in-one solutions for their data needs. And as ever, we plan to be right in the middle of it. Let’s smash another year! 🚀#opendata#datademocratization#newyearsresolutions
It’s Thursday and today we’re celebrating something incredibly important - the World Mental Health Day! 💙Organised by theWorld Federation for Mental Health, the day is an opportunity to highlight all that’s been done so far to improve awareness of and access to mental health care.As our specialty is data, we’re looking back at one of our most interesting posts which highlights just how important a well-designed government policy can be in improving the state of mental health care nationwide. Miranda Bryant’s brilliant article forThe Guardian about Finland’s battle to lower the country’s suicide rate can be accompanied nicely by our data (sourced from the World Bank) reflecting the changes described by her. The image here is a quick comparison of the changes globally and in Finland.Definitely read the article if you haven’t already!https://lnkd.in/e5djMypC#worldmentalhealthday#mentalhealth#healthdata
By now, we’ve all heard about the ‘painful’ October budget arriving shortly in the UK. On top of the expected emotions, the announcement reminded us about a data analysis we did a few months ago that puts everything in a fascinating perspective.Between 1972 and 2022, the tax revenue as a percentage of GDP increased from 16.42% to 19.11% globally. This is, of course, a significant increase over the years. When you look at specific countries (such as the UK), the changes are even more interesting.Without making any further observations today, the data really shows how what we hear on the news becomes so much more vivid when we then dive into the history books.#datatrends#taxpolicy#taxrevenue#economictrends
Coming out of a little Linkedin hibernation, we're thinking of last Monday and one of our FAVOURITE days of the year today - the International Day of Democracy! 🕊️☮️✌️And why is it one of our favourite days, you may ask? Well, thank you for asking, first of all. It’s because our favourite graph on Work With Data relates directly to its incredibly important history. We could speculate that a free press is important for a stable democracy, but we could also argue that it is essential. And we’ve got data to prove it!The scatter chart shows a pretty clear pattern of countries with a higher press freedom score also having a higher democracy score. When one of the two numbers moves in either direction, the other follows. What this implicitly suggests is that a free press is a necessary condition for a democratic regime.Of course, as with all data concerning the socio-political dimension, there is always nuance and a wider context to consider. However, in today’s world fraught with conflict, it’s important to not understate the importance of a free press.#opendata#freepress#pressfreedom#democracy
And just like that, another quarter is slowly coming to an end (though we still have a few weeks to do some special things). While a rooftop lunch was no longer an option given the insulting lack of sun, we still managed to have some fun.Went through everything we’d built and done at WWD in the last 3 months? Check ✅Dove deeper into how we can contribute more to the larger open data ecosystem? Check ✅Got excited about some amazing signups we’ve seen over the last few months? Check ✅Presented our favourite projects of the quarter and what we’ve learned from them? Check ✅Discovered that we were really, and I mean REALLY, not good at mini golf? Check ✅And now we’re ready for the final push to finish the year strong! 🚀
In many countries around the world, today is Back to School Day! 🎒While the novelty of seeing friends after the summer break and catching up about all the crazy adventures will quickly wear off and the usual gloominess associated with homework and exams settles in, education is nevertheless something we should all be excited about. And while we take a lot for granted, being able to easily access any piece of information at a moment’s notice is not actually a given everywhere in the world. As of 2022, just under 80% of the population uses the internet. We love to blame it for the downfall of civilization (and there is a lot about it that’s worrying and should be consistently on our radar), but it’s also an invaluable tool children use to gain knowledge. We often forget that access to it is not at 100% globally. There are many things that need fixing in this world, some arguably more pressing, but we like to highlight every single one of them - through data, of course.#internetaccess#worlddevelopment#socialdata#opendata
With more news about fires raging in both cities and forests coming to us every day, we’re revisiting one of our most popular data visualisations which helps put the deadly element in more context. The wildfires distribution map creates a panoramic view of all fires currently active around the world. The data collected and analysed byNASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration truly demonstrates the sheer scale of some of the biggest fires in recent history.Explore the map here,https://lnkd.in/eGazX-q6, and let us know if there was a location you were surprised by!#environment#climatechange#wildfires#opendata
Today is an important day, even more so in the context of everything happening around the world at this very moment. The World Humanitarian Day recognises the vital and often dangerous work of humanitarian workers whose tireless effort helps those affected by military conflicts, environmental disasters and life hardship.According toThe World Bank's data, the number of internally displaced people more than doubled between 2009 and 2023. When we add the people who were forced to leave their country, the numbers become even more staggering. Humanitarian workers help wherever and however they can, quite often risking their safety in the process. Today we recognise their hard work and remember those who lost their lives. ❤️🩹#WorldHumanitarianDay#OpenData
So we all agree that it’s hot today, right?! 🥵Now that the Olympic rush is over, we’re back to our data-filled world (though you can still visit our Olympic tracker to catch up on the results and news). First order of business: revisiting the temperature anomaly data in the face of today’s 32°C heat.Although those lying on a beach are arguably enjoying today’s sun, according toNASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the temperature anomaly on Earth increased from -0.17°C to 1.2°C between 1880 and 2023. A bit of a pessimistic spin on this glorious summer weather but when you’re in London, 32 degrees feel like 50.We’ll be enjoying a Magnum this evening while reading about climate change. 🍦🌡️#weatherdata#opendata#climatechange#summervibes
