Celebrating 21 years of sharing free knowledge through images, sound, and video 🎂 For 21 years, the incredible community has built a home over 122 million free-to-use images, sounds, videos, and other media.Launched in 2004, Wikimedia Commons has grown into one of the world’s largest repositories of freely usable media. As a sister project of Wikipedia, it hosts millions of files – photographs, illustrations, maps, audio, video, and more – all shared under free licenses so anyone can use, adapt, and distribute them. Commons was created to centralize media for Wikimedia projects, allowing contributors to upload once and have their work available across languages and platforms. Over the years, it has expanded through global photo contests, partnerships with cultural institutions, and the work of countless volunteers who upload, categorize, and improve files every day. From documenting rare species to preserving cultural heritage and illustrating breaking news events, Commons reflects the collective effort of a worldwide community dedicated to open access. FoP facilitates the free sharing and dissemination of knowledge, a core principle of Wikimedia projects likeWikipedia andWikimedia Commons. Contributors face restrictions in uploading photographs of public landmarks, sculptures, or artworks due to copyright constraints, particularly in jurisdictions with limited or no FoP. This hampers the ability to provide visual representations that enhance the quality and accessibility of articles, especially for educational and cultural content. Moreover, the absence of FoP can result in legal uncertainties for Wiki medians, as they might inadvertently infringe on copyright laws while attempting to document and share culturally significant works.
