Building peace in the minds of women and men

About us

UNESCO - the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was founded on 16 November 1945. For this specialized United Nations agency, it is not enough to build classrooms in devastated countries or to publish scientific breakthroughs. Education, Social and Natural Science, Culture and Communication are the means to a far more ambitious goal : to build peace in the minds of women and men.

What if buildings, sidewalks, and even cars weren’t designed with your body, needs, or daily realities in mind? 🤔That’s design bias. It can affect everything from car safety features to how accessible and safe our cities are. With more women in engineering, we can design solutions that work better for everyone. Yet according toUNESCO’s science report, women represent only 28% of engineering graduates. What do you think would change if there were more?Learn more about our ongoing efforts to support and promote women in science:https://lnkd.in/edAawYu3#WomenInScience#EveryVoiceInScience

Artificial intelligence is transforming how content is created, shared and consumed. But as generative tools become more accessible, clarity has not kept pace.Today, creators are increasingly navigating#AI without clear guidance on accuracy, consent or authenticity. This gap does not only affect individual creators. It shapes public trust in information itself.Media and Information Literacy (#MIL) sits at the centre of this challenge. It equips creators and audiences to access, analyze and engage with information with rigor, transparency and critical thinking. As AI accelerates new forms of storytelling and production, strengthening these foundations has never been more essential. In this context,UNESCO andGoogle are developing the Super Creators Toolkit, a practical Media and Information Literacy guide to support content creators in the ethical and informed use of AI, with hands-on checklists and real-world workflows. Following its release next spring, workshops in selected countries will support creators in applying the guidance in practice.Creators play a critical role in shaping today’s information spaces. This initiative invites them to engage, contribute and help strengthen trust in the digital environment. Mount Kilimanjaro is a major transboundary water tower for East Africa. Its glaciers, forests and groundwater systems regulate river flows and recharge aquifers that sustain more than two million people across Tanzania and Kenya. For conservation officers like Angela Nyaki at Mount Kilimanjaro National Park, a UNESCO#WorldHeritage site, these systems are not abstract hydrological assets. They are the foundation of local livelihoods and ecological stability. As climate pressures intensify, however, retreating glaciers and thinning forests are increasing vulnerability across these shared water systems. Water, unmanaged, can amplify risk. Governed cooperatively and informed by science, it becomes a multiplier of resilience, food security and regional stability.Through its Intergovernmental Hydrological Programme,UNESCO strengthens cooperative governance of shared water systems across Africa, supporting data-driven decision-making in 106 transboundary aquifers.WithFAO, UNESCO is investing $8 million in the Kilimanjaro Water Tower project, combines hydrological research, aquifer mapping and large-scale ecosystem restoration, including 400 km² of cloud forest, to secure long-term groundwater storage.Safeguarding Kilimanjaro is not only about conservation. It is about strengthening water security as a foundation for sustainable development#ForThePeople:https://lnkd.in/eVimtHAs

For three decades, the World Orchestra for Peace, UNESCO Artist for Peace, has united world-class musicians to show that music can be a powerful ambassador for peace across borders and generations. Marking its 30th anniversary back in October, 26 of the finest orchestral players and singers from 21 countries gathered at the Church of St. Koloman in Salzburg for the UNESCO Concert for Peace 2025, performing the timeless music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Bridging centuries and cultures, this concert reminds us that music speaks a universal language of peace and solidarity. Watch the full concert here: https://lnkd.in/eayh83ZYCharles Kaye

AI is increasingly shaping how people access services, information, and opportunities. Yet when these systems are developed without diversity, they risk reinforcing bias and exclusion.According toUNESCO’s science report, women represent only 22% of professionals working in AI. Addressing this gap is essential to advancing more inclusive and impactful technological innovation.Learn more about our ongoing efforts to support and promote women in science:https://lnkd.in/eC344KEs#WomenInScience#EveryVoiceInScience

Today is the International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism. It reminds us that violent extremism threatens peace, tolerance, and security around the world. In the digital age, this threat is growing and changing quickly, as new technologies help spread harmful narratives and make online recruitment easier.UNESCO works to prevent violent extremism by focusing on education, not just responding after it happens, and strengthening capacities of journalists, online educations, and young people to navigate on-line spaces meaningfully.Learn more about our work:https://lnkd.in/e78BmkuX#PVEDay
