Privacy and freedom online
About us
The Tor Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We develop free and open source software for privacy and freedom online, protecting people from tracking, surveillance, and censorship. The Tor Project’s mission is to advance human rights and freedoms by creating and deploying free and open source anonymity and privacy technologies, support their unrestricted availability and use, and further their scientific and popular understanding.Tor protects you by bouncing your communications around a distributed network of relays run by volunteers worldwide: it prevents somebody watching your internet connection from learning what sites you visit and it prevents the sites you visit from learning your physical location. Tor works with many of your existing applications, including web browsers, instant messaging clients, remote login, and other applications based on the TCP protocol. The easiest way to use Tor is in Tor Browser, which adds additional privacy protections to your browsing experience. Tor Browser protects against cross-site tracking with first-party isolation and browser fingerprinting. Using Tor can also help you access an open web if you're in a part of the world or on a network where sites are blocked.

"The worst that can happen for a journalist is to put the source in jeopardy." For more than two decades,The Tor Project has been at the forefront of building free, open‑source tools that protect anonymity online. Its privacy technology has become indispensable for media professionals working under pressure, from reporting in hostile environments to communicating securely with sources whose safety depends on staying invisible. 🎞️ For#GMFTalk, we spoke with Executive Directorisabela F. about Tor's mission, why it matters so deeply for journalists, and the common pitfalls people still face when it comes to digital security. A crucial conversation on why privacy isn't optional — especially when the stakes are high. ⬇️#GMF26#JournalismOutLoud
💜 A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Tor Community 💚Together, we’ve raised $1,200,200 during our end-of-year fundraising campaign. This is a powerful testament to the strength of our collective mission. These funds will fuel our ongoing fight for internet freedom. As our Executive Director, Isabela, said:“We're continuing with a clear vision: make it easier for people to exercise their right to privacy and access to information with tools that keep us connected, and make it harder for powerful adversaries to break that connection.”Learn more about our vision for 2026:https://lnkd.in/gFyvu6u3

Privacy infrastructure can't be conditional on institutional approval. 🔒In our latest Open Conversation,The Tor Project co-founder Roger Dingledine makes the case for metadata protection—who you talk to, where you go online, the patterns you leave behind—as baseline infrastructure, not a privilege. His work over two decades has helped hundreds of thousands of people institutions failed to protect: activists under authoritarian regimes, journalists exposing corruption, people seeking healthcare their governments criminalized. Can we build stronger systems that protect people institutions don't?
🇮🇷 Update: Brief returns of internet access are driving spikes in Snowflake usage. Please help us run more proxies if you can. ❄️snowflake.torproject.orgThe easiest ways to run Snowflake is by using Tor Browser, Orbot, or installing the browser add on in your current browser. Extra capacity helps people in Iran stay connected when the network comes back online.
