  • For 13 years, Lisa White was a steady presence in the emergency department at NYU Langone Health’s hospital in Brooklyn. A charge nurse with a doctorate of nursing practice, she spent the past three decades caring for the people of the New York tri-state area. But last fall, just weeks after undergoing hip replacement surgery and beginning disability leave, White once again found herself on the other side of the hospital bed. She started to develop pains in her lower back, which quickly made their way down to her legs. It was bone cancer.Over the next several weeks, White and her sister, Joanna White-Oldham, worked tirelessly to submit extensive documentation to secure medical leave beyond NYU Langone’s six-month limit. On March 21, White became one of several employees at NYU Langone in the last few years suddenly fired after receiving a major medical diagnosis — and one of many others, including patients, who claimed to have been gravely mistreated by the medical center, according to court documents obtained by WSN. White passed away on Monday, June 30 while receiving hospice care. She was 50.NYU Langone said it could not comment on this story.Click the link in to read the full story.Written by Yezen Saadah.

  • Tisch alum Molly Shannon, an award-winning actress and former star of “Saturday Night Live,” will address graduates and receive an honorary degree at NYU’s 2025 all-university commencement ceremony in May. New York Liberty CEO Keia Clarke and renowned physicist Walter Massey will join Shannon in receiving honorary degrees at the 192nd ceremony at Yankee Stadium. Shannon, a three-time Primetime Emmy nominee and Screen Actors Guild Award recipient famous for her six-year run on SNL — which just celebrated its 50th anniversary — will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts Degree and deliver the university’s commencement address following a speech from President Linda Mills and faculty-led procession exercises. “Motivated by innate talent, her NYU education and a personal history with loss and grief, Molly has developed an unparalleled ability to blend physical comedy with emotional depth,” Mills said in an announcement. “We are thrilled to celebrate her imprint on comedy and culture — particularly now, on the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live — and we know her story will inspire NYU graduates as they take on new and different roles.”Click the link to read more.Written by Aashna Miharia and Yezen SaadahPhoto courtesy of Joseph Tirellahttps://lnkd.in/gp39SpSZ

  • The Trump administration restored the immigration statuses for “some” members of the NYU community who were affected by its onslaught of visa revocations after facing extensive scrutiny from federal courts, a university administrator told WSN. Josh Taylor, the vice president of global outreach and mobility at NYU, said the Office of Global Services has been directly in touch with those whose statuses were reversed, but did not specify a figure or whether they were students or faculty. OGS representatives have said at in-person sessions that the number of affected university affiliates was “low.”“Our Office of Global Services staff is continually checking the government database for updates and will be in touch with students as we receive new information,” Taylor said in an email to WSN. “Ongoing support for our community is our top priority.” Click the link to read more.Written Aashna Miharia, Dharma Niles and Yezen SaadahPhoto by Lauren Sanchezhttps://lnkd.in/e2dYmHBy

  • Three weeks ago, students and faculty were alarmed to find blacked-out SUVs plastered with cards reading “Federal Law Enforcement” stationed at LaGuardia Place outside Bobst Library. This came as the federal government escalated its detainments and visa revocations of noncitizens at U.S. colleges — including NYU — inciting fear and anxiety among members of the university’s international community. Hours after the vehicles’ initial sighting, with students and faculty hiding in their offices and rooms in a panic, it was revealed that the cars were Secret Service for Stern first-year Barron Trump. “It felt real for a period of time — that ICE agents were on campus and that a student was going to get detained,” one international student, who requested anonymity out of fear of federal retaliation, said in an interview with WSN. “There was a moment of realization that this is something that is very realistic.”Click the link to read more.Written byYezen SaadahPhoto byAlex Woodworthhttps://lnkd.in/eRfzNxec

  • From the WSN Editorial Board: This past week, Harvard University took many by surprise in a rare moment of institutional integrity. In light of the Trump administration’s demands to silence student protests, dismantle diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and freeze over $3 billion in federal funding, Harvard refused acquiescence and sued the federal government. However, as over 200 university presidents signed onto a public statement speaking out against President Donald Trump’s “unprecedented government overreach,” President Linda Mills was nowhere to be found. NYU, a leading research institution in the United States, has a responsibility to follow Harvard’s example in publicly opposing the administration’s onslaught against higher education. But given the university’s resounding silence on this escalating crackdown, chances of rivalry are likely null and void. Click the link to read the full editorial.https://lnkd.in/gr9UbCSV

  • The majority of full-time faculty at the School of Law, including former NYU President John Sexton, signed onto a letter slamming the Trump administration’s executive crackdown on U.S. colleges and affirming the faculty’s support for academic freedom. In the letter, sent to the NYU Law community on April 17 and obtained by WSN, 112 professors condemned the federal government’s targeting of universities “in ways that undermine academic independence and the free exchange of ideas.” They argued that President Donald Trump’s threats to impeach judges and requirements for lawyers to “acquiesce to improper demands” unconstitutionally undermine democracy, freedom of expression and basic due process. “If such actions continue, the damage to our intellectual communities, which depend on the lawful freedom of expression and open exchange of ideas, could be immense,” the letter read. “So too would be the danger to basic due process values that protect each and every one of us.”Click the link to read more. • Around 300 students, faculty and community advocates marched from Washington Square Park to Foley Square on Thursday afternoon in protest of the Trump administration’s student and faculty visa revocations, research grant terminations and widespread attack on higher education. That same day, dozens of NYU professors moved their classes off campus to demand the university commit to protecting its international community. The protesters chanted “Hands off our students now,” “No more war on students’ lives” and “We need teachers, we need books, we need the money the billionaires took” as they marched south on Lafayette Street. The demonstration — organized by on-campus groups including NYU Researchers United, the American Association of University Professors and NYU’s graduate student workers union — also featured student groups from Rutgers University, Hunter College and other schools in the New York and New Jersey area.Click the link to read more.Written byAmelia Hernández Gioia Photos byAlex Woodworthhttps://lnkd.in/gEWJVsfd

  • For 17 months, the Kimmel Center for University Life’s Grand Staircase — once a hub for student protests — has been walled off, accompanied by rumors of an ongoing renovation. With construction now set to finish over the coming summer and fall semesters, NYU shared details of the redesign with WSN. The renovation will separate half of the staircase into three to four “dynamic seating pods,” each of which have leveled benches and seat around 10-15 individuals. NYU spokesperson Joseph Tirella sent WSN two conceptual renderings of the building’s lobby, and said the new arrangement will allow for small, “intimate” groups and foster more conversation among students on the staircase.  “This project transforms the prominent staircase at NYU’s Kimmel Center for University Life into a safer, more welcoming and inclusive space for the entire NYU community,” Tirella said.Click the link to read more.Written byAmelia Hernández GioiaPhoto courtesy of Joseph Tirellahttps://lnkd.in/gPR8MX6V

  • Over 20 people rallied in Washington Square Park on Monday to demand that the university publicly condemn the NYU College Republicans for organizing an on-campus panel featuring three far-right influencers, one of whom requested “armed security” at the event. The rally, held by NYU’s chapter of Students for a Democratic Society, began with demonstrators chanting “We don’t want no racist here” and “Down with deportation” while holding a sign that read “NO COMPLIANCE WITH TRUMP’S VIOLENCE” in Garibaldi Plaza. The group then marched around the park, turned on Mercer Street to march past the Paulson Center and concluded the protest outside the Kimmel Center for University Life. In an interview with WSN, SDS member Caleb Levy said the university’s statement announcing that the panel was cancelled due to “threatening developments” failed to hold the College Republicans accountable. Levy said that in order to better protect its international students and faculty, NYU should specifically address the club’s invitation to speakers who openly champion white supremacy.“We’re here to make clear that the students do not stand by this and that the students are not just going to be quiet over this,” Levy said. “In the event that NYU continues to not acknowledge us, we’re going to continue to be active, because at the end of the day, the administration is supposed to keep us safe.”Written byAmanda ChenPhoto byAlex WoodworthClick the link to read more.https://lnkd.in/gAxrzNfP

  • From the WSN Editorial Board: While students were enjoying their spring break, a hacker took over NYU’s homepage for more than two hours, leaking the names, hometowns, GPAs, test scores as well as personal information related to family members and citizenship status of over 3 million applicants — dating back to at least 1978 across all schools. The hacker also displayed three charts with what they claimed to be the university’s average admitted SAT scores, ACT scores and GPAs for the 2024-25 admissions cycle. They argued that NYU has continued to use race-sensitive admissions, despite the Supreme Court’s takedown of affirmative action in 2023, and showed that the average scores for Asian and white applicants were allegedly higher than those who identify as Hispanic or Black. In every universitywide communication about the breach, NYU failed to address the attack’s racially targeted nature or inform the overwhelming majority of individuals affected that their privacy had been egregiously invaded.Click the link to read more.Graphic by Kyra Reilleyhttps://lnkd.in/gJZTukZ8
