Huge congratulations to the 2025 Arts Foundation Te Tumu Toi Laureates! 🥳 We’re proud to have five of this year’s visionary Arts Foundation Laureates represented in our collection, with major works by Shona Rapira-Davies and Kate Newby currently on display in our art galleries, and works by Seraphine Pick, Reuben Paterson and Cheryl Lucas also held in our care.Shona’s powerful installation ‘Ngā Morehu’ anchors our Toi Art gallery space, an assembly of clay figures transformed by fire. They invoke the strength of Māori women who have endured the trauma of colonisation and continue to carry their culture forward. It’s a work of power, presence, and holds deep intergenerational resonance.Upstairs, Kate Newby’s poetic, ceramic tile works ‘UGH MAGIC’ and ‘Her voice :,,,,))))’ offer a quieter but equally resonant experience, engaging with space and material in unexpected ways. Her work is held in the national art collection alongside that of fellow Laureates Séraphine Pick, Reuben Paterson and Cheryl Lucas. These awards recognise the remarkable achievements of these artists in their fields and the significant impact their work has on art and culture in Aotearoa New Zealand.

It is with deep respect that Te Papa acknowledges the passing of The Right Honourable Jim Bolger ONZ PC, former Prime Minister of Aotearoa New Zealand (1990–1997). A pivotal figure in Aotearoa New Zealand's modern political history, Mr Bolger led the country through a time of significant transformation, overseeing major electoral reform and advancing early Treaty of Waitangi settlements that continue to shape our national identity. As a strong supporter of Te Papa, he endorsed the vision for a national museum. On 2 July 1994, he unveiled the Te Papa foundation stone, symbolising our commitment to Papatūānuku, the environment, and to telling the diverse stories of Aotearoa New Zealand.Inscribed on the stone:"Te ihi, te mana, te wehi. Mā te kōhatu nei e whakatā, e whakatipu ngā rangatiratanga.""This stone celebrates the many journeys and identities of all the communities and peoples of New Zealand."Today we honour Jim Bolger’s leadership and the legacy he leaves in the foundations of Te Papa, and the many lives he touched during his decades of public service.
