About us
The Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU), based at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, is the official archives for the institutions, bodies, and agencies of the European Union. Housed in the historic Villa Salviati, the HAEU preserves and provides access to the EU’s archival holdings under the 30-year rule, as well as private papers of individuals, movements, and organisations involved in European integration.Established in 1983 and opened to the public in 1986, the HAEU operates under long-standing partnership agreements between the EUI and the European Commission, most recently renewed in 2019. Beyond safeguarding Europe’s documentary heritage, the Archives actively supports research, offering over 20 annual research grants and fostering academic exchange through the Alcide De Gasperi Research Centre. It also operates a civic education programme, reaching approximately 1000 school-aged young people each year.

The panorama of new research on female actors in the history of European integration is truly exciting. "It was a long way, but it was worth the fight — and the endurance!"Tonight, the EUI hosted Viviane Reding for the 2025 edition of the Ursula Hirschmann lecture, an annual collaboration between the EUI'sEUI History Department, theHistorical Archives of the European Union, theRobert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, and the University of Luxembourg. 🇪🇺🇱🇺 Viviane Reding, a European Union leader for several decades, delivered a lecture tracing the trajectory of women in the EU. Drawing upon the lessons learned as a young girl growing up in Luxembourg, many of which she took with her into a political career, Reding emphasised the importance of "speaking up and not giving up". 🎤 The event was opened by EUI PresidentPatrizia Isabelle Nanz and concluded with a Q&A session covering important issues such as increasing conservatism amongst the younger generation, political backlash against progressive policies, and Law as a tool for regulation and protection. 💬 "What a year, and what memories!" Viviane Reding stated, drawing attention to this being a monumental period for the event, with this year's lecture coinciding with both 75 years of the Schuman Declaration and the 50th anniversary of the EUI. ✨ The annual Ursula Hirschmann Lecture series was started at the EUI in 2001. It is named after Ursula Hirschmann, anti-fascist, feminist, European visionary, and founder of the Brussels group Femmes pour l'Europe, a movement to promote gender equality. How do we protect our archives and people? The SAGA (Sustainable Archives and Greener Approaches) project brings together 9 European partners from archival, scientific, and higher education institutions. One of its main goals is the protection and sustainable management of documentary heritage.🛡️📚 How do we protect our archives and the people who work with them? Microorganisms are everywhere: in the air, on documents, and on archival storage surfaces. Without proper control, they can: ⚠️ Damage valuable archival materials ⚠️ Pose risks to the health of archivists, staff and visitorsRegarding the concentration of indoor airborne microorganisms, some recommendations exist:WHO: <500 CFU/m³ = good; >1000 CFU/m³ may indicate contaminationCFU (Colony Forming Unit) is unit in microbiology used to quantify viable microorganisms present in analyzed sample/environment.👉 Within the SAGA project, the Institute of Molecular Biology, Slovak Academy of Sciences (Bratislava) leads the microbiological and molecular biology research. By studying both airborne microorganisms and those found on archival documents, researchers aim to prevent deterioration of cultural heritage and create safer environments for everyone working in archives.🌱Learn more about the SAGA Project here:https://sagaproject.eu/➡️Co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union#SAGAproject#RiskManagement#Greeningarchives#CreativeEurope#Europeforculture Ústav molekulárnej biológie SAV, v. v. i. / Institute of Molecular Biology SAS v. i.;Munster Technological University;National Archives of Hungary; The National Archives of Malta;Foundation for Landscape Protection;Historical Archives of the European Union;Grupo DEX
