Official archives for the historical documents of EU institutions

About us

The Historical Archives of the European Union (HAEU), based at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, is the official archives for the institutions, bodies, and agencies of the European Union. Housed in the historic Villa Salviati, the HAEU preserves and provides access to the EU’s archival holdings under the 30-year rule, as well as private papers of individuals, movements, and organisations involved in European integration.Established in 1983 and opened to the public in 1986, the HAEU operates under long-standing partnership agreements between the EUI and the European Commission, most recently renewed in 2019. Beyond safeguarding Europe’s documentary heritage, the Archives actively supports research, offering over 20 annual research grants and fostering academic exchange through the Alcide De Gasperi Research Centre. It also operates a civic education programme, reaching approximately 1000 school-aged young people each year.
