In today's age of constant crises, the humanities are increasingly under pressure. Do we still need them at all? And if so, why do many humanities scholars struggle to present their research to the public both confidently and persuasively? Our authorJohannes Franzen (Universität Mannheim) explains more on our podcast:https://lnkd.in/djsm5YcZ Photo: Marion Koell #DeGruyterBrill#Podcast#Humanities
🐎 Today marks the start of the Lunar New Year. Our team in Beijing got together recently to kick off the new year and are heading home to spend time with their families now. Happy Year of the Fire Horse to our team in Asia, and to everyone celebrating around the world!Pictured are holiday decorations at our Beijing office, the team, and stuffed horses made as giveaways for the coming year. We want some!#DeGruyterBrill#LunarNewYear
Design is not just an embellishment, but a fundamental process of decision-making that helps us build a better life for everyone. Even Donald Trump's and Joe Biden's administrations can agree on its importance, asClive Grinyer (former head of service design at theRoyal College of Art and visiting professor atThe Glasgow School of Art) writes on our blog.Learn more about the benefits of design for citizens and consumers alike here:https://lnkd.in/e2QbQhRi#DeGruyterBrill#Design#BusinessDe Gruyter Brill Business & Economics

Announcing the publication of two new International Maritime Boundary reports available onDe Gruyter Brill's online platform: Canada-Denmark/Greenland and Honduras-Nicaragua.Whitney Lackenbauer and David Gray provide a detailed report on the 2022 agreement between Canada and Denmark (together with Greenland) establishing (or, in some sections, adjusting) a nearly 4,000 kilometer-long maritime boundary from the Labrador Sea in the south to the Arctic Ocean in the north. This agreement, by delimiting Tartupaluk/Hans Island, also resolves the last Arctic territorial sovereignty dispute.Benjamin Samson andEran Sthoeger, Esq. report on the innovative 2021 treaty between Honduras and Nicaragua establishing maritime boundaries on both sides of the Central American isthmus: a gap filler in the Caribbean Sea to complete the work of the ICJ in 2007 and a line extending into the Pacific Ocean starting at the tri-state closing line of the Gulf of Fonseca. With thanks to De Gruyter Brill andAmerican Society of International Law for continuing to support this publication, toInternational Mapping for the crisp, informative graphics and, most importantly, to the authors for their time, energy and expertise.https://lnkd.in/gkTxDhMC

BIG moment. Big feelings. Big box. 📦 My author copies have arrived.... very unexpectedly EARLY! Direct from the publisherDe Gruyter BrillI was excited and nervous in equal measure opening this box. So much so that I actually hesitated… Do I leave them for a bit? Wait until the kids get home?Worth noting that my youngest son was off school today poorly, so he did a check to make sure it was THE box and the verdict was confirmed 📘 🎉 You can completely overthink moments like this - so I just opened it, and with genuine nerves too.So, in true 'LinkedIn author style' (apparently this is a thing 😅), you’re getting the unboxing. Casual approach, so apologies in advance.Someone mentioned in a meeting earlier this week that I didn’t seem that excited about the upcoming release date. That’s because it still felt a while away… and it’s been a while since the final proof was signed off.I can confirm however, that when they landed today, there were lots of smiles! When my eldest two got home from school and saw the opened box, I got the biggest hugs, with both of them telling me how proud they are of me… and how 'cool' this is. Sales targets no longer matter at this stage, the work was absolutely worth it ❤️ I’m genuinely pleased and proud of what this book is... and all it’s grown into.Thank you to everyone who’s been part of this journey - knowingly or unknowingly.
Empathy seems to be in short supply nowadays. As such, it deserved all the attention it got at the recent Humanities for Humans talk, hosted by 1014 - space for ideas in New York.Following opening remarks by our publishing directorArjan van Dijk, speakers Jennifer Evans (Carleton University), Suzanne Keen (author of "Empathy and the Novel") and Irene Kacandes (Dartmouth College) highlighted the importance of cultivating empathy, kindness and compassion to bridge our political differences. We're looking forward to hosting another Humanities for Humans talk in Berlin this year! More details to follow.Photos: Roshni Khatri#DeGruyterBrill #Humanities #Discussion #Empathy
