Species Of The Week - Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolor)🦜 A lot of us want to escape the winter chill - but these birds fly hundreds of kilometres across Bass Strait to reach warmer climes of the Australian mainland. What's more incredible, a pair of Swift Parrots can return to the same tree in Tasmania for the breeding season - as long as nearby flowering gums are available. 🤯The Swift Parrot is listed as Critically Endangered with the continued clearing of native forest vegetation in Tasmania and the mainland causing decline in their numbers and threatening this species' existence.Learn more about these stunning birds on the AM site:https://bit.ly/3H2BYm5📸: Bird Explorers
It's#NationalVolunteerWeek this week 🙌 The AM has a variety of volunteer positions, from front-of-house to back-of-house and digital volunteering – volunteers are an integral part of the museum. We caught up with some of our volunteers to find out what keeps them coming back each week - some of them for over a decade! .....✨ MEET GEOFF GQ: Where do you volunteer at the Museum?I'm a front-of-house volunteer, so I'm meeting and greeting people. Occasionally, I do highlight tours, and I manage the talking point tables, which have a variety of items that people can ask questions about all touch and interact with.Q: What's your favourite thing about volunteering at the Museum?A: It's contact with people. Watching that light go on with an 8, 9 or 10-year-old and even with an adult at times. There's a bit of a 'wow' factor at times!Q: What advice would you give to someone thinking of volunteering at the Museum?A: The public spaces are only part of the story - behind the scenes, there's the research in the collections; just do your homework to see where you'd like to volunteer.✨ MEET ANNAQ: Where do you volunteer at the Museum?A: I run the Talking Point tables. I do the dinosaur talking point tables, as well as the birds, frogs and wildlife talking point tables.Q: How often do you volunteer?A: I volunteer one day a week.Q: What's your favourite thing that you've learned here?A: I learned about Australian fauna and the difference between kangaroos and wallabies, and about dangerous animals, like snakes and all sorts of things. I know how to avoid them!Q: What do you enjoy about volunteering at the Museum?A: Volunteering at the Museum one day a week gives me the gives routine. Also - there are diverse exhibitions that I can enjoy attending, and sometimes we get free entry!✨ GEOFF WQ: What's your favourite thing about volunteering at the Museum?A: The opportunity to be able to chat with lots of people about lots of different subjects because there are so many different subjects in the Museum about lots of different things. Lots of overseas visitors come here, so it's interesting to talk to them as well as to Australians.Q: Because you also run Highlight Tours, what is your favourite thing in the Museum?A: I like Eric, is the skeleton. I like Captain Cook's Cape because it gives you an opportunity to talk about some early Australian colonial history and another and the funnel web spider up on the second floor is not bad because it gives you a chance to scare people with some of Australia's nice little scary animals.Q: What advice do you have for someone thinking about volunteering?A: It's good fun! I've been retired for a very long time, and it gives you a chance to learn about some new things, the chance to talk to people, and a chance to get to know some of the other volunteers who are really nice as well.THANK YOU VOLLIES 💕

The AM's Dr Jodi Rowley and Dane Trembath have recently returned from a Bush Blitz expedition on Jawoyn Country in the Northern Territory. During the trip, the team worked to scientifically document the frogs and reptiles in the region, accessing remote sites via helicopters. 🚁🦎🐸 During the expedition, Dr Rowley recorded frog calls from a part of Australia that our FrogID project has never recorded calls from before! The expedition was led by the Bush Blitz Team and theMuseum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT), in collaboration with theJawoyn Association, Traditional Owners and Warddekken Rangers. It took place on the traditional lands of the Jawoyn spanning Nitmiluk National Park, the southern section of Kakadu National Park and south-western corner of Arnhem Land. The scientists will be hard at work collating the findings from the trip over the coming months and we look forward to sharing them with you soon 🔬📸: Dr Jodi Rowley

Species of the week - Binturong (Arctictis binturong) Is it a bear? 🐻 Is it a cat? 🐱 No, it's a bearcat! They are actually a type of Civet (Family "Viverridae").More commonly known as the Binturong, this mammal is native to South and Southeast Asia. It lives in forests and eats fruit and small mammals like birds, fish, earthworms and insects. The Binturong uses its prehensile tail to not only climb but also to mark its territory. The Binturong has an oil gland under its tail, which it drags along trees to let other Binturong know of its presence. And their scent is very distinctive - they smell of buttered popcorn! 🍿If you'd like to learn more about beautiful Binturong, come and explore our latest exhibition, Tales from the Coasts, thanks to our friends at the National Museum of Singapore. With stunning watercolour drawings showcasing the biodiversity and conservation efforts across Australia and the Singapore-Malaya region, this collection is a must-see for fans of scientific illustrations from the 19th century. It's on now at the AM. Entry is free.Learn more about the exhibition on the AM site:https://lnkd.in/eUvh8hKm

📣 CAN YOU HELP? 📣Researchers at the Australian Museum are trying to learn how Cane Toads have been able to spread so successfully by evaluating their calls. We're calling on citizen scientists - like you - to help us by recording the calls of Cane Toads on the FrogID app if you're in Australia and on iNaturalist if you're elsewhere in the world. 🐸Let's work together to collect as much data as possible to understand how Cane Toad calls vary across regions in Australia and beyond.Learn more about the study on the AM blog.https://lnkd.in/ejZcTK9p
