When the Trump administration froze U.S. foreign assistance and then cut most programs at USAID, multiple groups launched efforts to provide emergency funding to try to keep some of the most critical programs running. It wasn't easy to see at the time how much money would flow into those efforts. Now, we have an initial reporting from several groups. Altogether, private donors gave more than $125 million to these emergency funds. While that sum was not nearly enough to backfill the cuts, it was more than organizers of these funds ever had imagined possible. I spoke with some of the people who ran these funds as well as donors, who were moved to take action in the face of these cuts that have had profound impacts across the world.https://lnkd.in/gEUgPrNr

In Lesotho, a remote mountain kingdom deeply reliant on U.S. health aid, funding cuts triggered shuttered clinics, halted HIV testing and mass layoffs.AP’s Renata Brito, Bram Janssen, Nqobile Ntshangase and Panagiotis Mouzakis traveled to the country to document the human toll.
