Study Places

The library offers an assortment of spaces to meet the varying needs of students using the facility for studying. Whether you need space for quiet, individual work or collaborative group study, there’s a place for you in Memorial Library.

Group Study Areas

These areas are for those who want to study together and collaborate. Conversations are permitted.

  • 1st floor Computer Lab (Room 140)
  • 1st floor West Corridor (just outside the exit gates)
  • All of 2nd floor West Corridor, including rooms 224 and 240
  • Graduate Room (464 across from the elevators)
  • Group study rooms
  • Reference Reading Room (262 across from the elevators)

Quiet Study Areas

These areas are for quiet study. Please lower your voice and keep your conversation brief.

  • 112 (1st floor Reading Room)
  • 116 (1st floor West Corridor Study Hall)
  • 212 (Petrovich Reading Room)
  • 412 (East Asian Reading Room)
  • 424 (Greek and Latin Reading Room)
  • 4th floor West Corridor
  • All carrels (locked or open)
  • Mills Music Library (entire space)

Silent Study Areas

Please do not talk in silent study areas.

  • 124 (located off the 1st floor West Corridor)

If other library patrons are not following these policies, please contact staff at theCirculation Desk on the first floor.

  • Carrels (Open, Locked, and Reservable)

    Information regarding both open carrels for individual study and locked carrels (a.k.a. “cages”) for graduate students.

  • Group Study Rooms

    Closed rooms designated for groups of people studying together who require talking.

  • Reading Rooms

    Reading Rooms are mostly large subject specific research rooms with large tables and many chairs. Most of these rooms, but not all, are designated quiet study.

  • The Michael A. West Graduate Room

    This space is dedicated to supporting graduate students working alone or in small groups. This is intended to be a talking and collaborative space.

  • West Corridor

    Computer Lab, study space, vending machine, and a lecture hall are all located in the first floor west corridor. Other west corridor areas, many with comfortable seating, are located on the 2nd and 4th floors inside Memorial Library.
