FAQs

A Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and doctors. LPNs work in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, clinics, and long-term care facilities, and are integral to patient care teams.

To become an LPN, you need to complete a state-approved practical nursing program, which typically involves both classroom learning and clinical experience. After completing the program, you must pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to obtain licensure.

The duration of LPN programs varies, but most can be completed within 12 to 18 months. This timeframe includes the required coursework and clinical hours needed for licensure.

LPNs are responsible for providing basic medical and nursing care, such as checking vital signs, administering medication, dressing wounds, and assisting with daily living activities. They also play a crucial role in communicating with patients and their families and maintaining patient records.

While both types of nurses are essential in healthcare, they differ in terms of education and tasks. Becoming an LPN takes up to 18 months and requires you to pass the NCLEX-PN, while becoming an RN involves passing the NCLEX-RN after an up to 4-year program. LPNs work under the direction of RNs, who have a broader scope of responsibility.
