The term “dermatology” originates from the Greek words “derma,” meaning “skin,” and “logia,” meaning “the study of.” Hence, dermatology means the study of the skin.
Dermatology focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. As a medical specialty, it is very varied, as it encompasses a wide variety of conditions and combines aspects of both medical and surgical practice. Common conditions addressed by dermatologists includeacne, psoriasis, eczema, skin infections, andmelanomas and other skin cancers. Scope of practice may also include cosmetic procedures.
A dermatology residency typically takes four years to complete in the United States, with the first year being the general medical internship covering various specialties, and the other three years being dedicated to dermatology specifically.
A residency in dermatology is highly sought after for several reasons:Dermatologists often have a good work-life balance with regular working hours and limited emergency duties. Still, dermatology ranks among the higher paid specialties. On top of this, dermatology is a very varied field, offering a diverse patient population, medical as well as surgical practice, and constant advancements in procedures and knowledge that will keep things interesting. The limited number of dermatology residency positions available adds to the competitive nature as well.
