Bong Joon-Ho

  • South-Korean director born in Seoul in 1969

    After studying sociology at the Yonsei University, Bong Joon-Ho entered the Korean Academy of Film Arts to attend film studies. His first film,Barking Dog, released in 2000, threw attention on him. His next film,Memories of Murder (2003) was a commercial and critical success in South Korea.The Host marked a big step in his career for it was a hit in Korea and a number of foreign countries. Bong Joon-Ho then participated with directors Leos Carax and Michel Gondry to a triptych film namedTokyo!. In 2009,Mother was selected in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, he directed his first English-language film,Snowpiercer, based on the graphic novel,Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. Okja, in Competition at Cannes in 2017, was released exclusively on Netflix. He re-entered the Cannes competition in 2019 withParasite, which won the Palme d'Or. Recognized worldwide, he presides over the 78th Venice Film Festival jury.
